Yesterday, I saw a “new” white mushroom sticking up in the back of our property and went to check it out. I was stunned to see one shaggy main and several clusters of inky caps not far from it. I got so excited! I’m new to mushroom foraging so I didn’t pick it, but love finding new mushrooms and learning to identifying them. The inky caps have been around for years but I never knew what they were. It wasn’t until the “great mushroom explosion” this year that I felt compelled to try to find out what all the amazing mushrooms were in my yard. I’ve found several that, if I’ve ID’s them correctly, are edible. It truly is fascinating to see so many different varieties of mushrooms, edible or not.
You missed an opportunity to use a wonderful word: deliquescent. And, before they deliquesce, they are one of my favourite mushrooms for making a delicate soup out of. Delicious!
These grow on a field behind my work (garden center), between our back greenhouse and our compost. Can't wait for them to fruit again; it's the only fungi that I can ID 100%.
@@FreshCapMushrooms No doubt, gotta stop for something like this. You don't come across a find like this very often. Congrats. Makes for great video content too!

I've only ever found one randomly in my grandma's back yard and I was so excited when I did. Didn't get to eat it because everyone was scared i wasn't identifying it correctly xd
If you aren't scared, you're doing it wrong. Better safe than dead. Don't eat any wild mushroom unless you're 100% sure it's safe and have the experience to back it up.
They usually pop up after the 1st frost, or a very cold night, right after a hard rain in the fall, …right around the same time frame each fall, and that is the bluebell, … another very delectable tasting shroom!
I'm curious do you guys film in Michigan at all? Because we just got 3 days downpour of rain and some houses got flooded and there's a lot of mushrooms out right now that are just like that in the inky self-destruct way. Like right now I could just look in my backyard and there's a fairy ring out there where we used to keep the pool and it's pretty neat to see but the mushrooms are not edible they're something called brittle stems at least that's what my neighbor told me and I love to forge for mushrooms when I get chances but having them in my backyard is pretty cool just to look at not eat cuz as soon as you pick these ones they do the same thing I picked a couple of them just so I can look at them closer and take some cool pictures but as soon as I pick them like a few minutes after literally they started turning into goop and so I put them in a bag to see what would happen and they literally disintegrated into goop that looked like ink just like he says. 😱 Is so interesting tho🤩
In the UK, we call them "Shaggy Ink Caps". My girlfriend and I found a few last year, they're delicious fried in garlic butter. *Edit; I've also just learned the the ink can still be used in cooking, and is often used as a squid ink alternative for Vegan recipes.
How long do you have after you pick them before they go inky? If you picked a perfectly fresh one in the morning would it still be good for dinner 10 hours later? And is the ink edible too? It looks like soy sauce.
Yeah they're coming up here too. My parents have a bunch at the back of their property. My mom and nephew tried them for the first time earlier this week... my gf & I had eaten some a few years ago LOL
I just found a ton of them. Yes, I picked all of them. You can either freeze dry them or saute them and freeze them. I shared them with all of my neighbors.
Next time make sure you leave some so that the patch will continue to thrive. Sometimes if you get too excited and pick them all then you destroy them in that spot
I think I found some of these on the side of a trail while out hunting. There was a strip of old growth left in the middle of two clear cuts, that had a stream running thru the middle. Just inside of the shade of the old growth trees there were a bunch of mushrooms that looked like these, I found 3 large patches like the one you showed, but none of them had started to decay yet. Would this be the same mushroom? There is no grass fields in the area other than the farmers fields down at the bottom of the hills.
I was sharing some words about mycology with a friend and I'm pretty sure I told it it would be pretty hard to start cloning mushroms with no knowledge in mycology and u drop this vid, can't wait to see the cloning attempts ♥️
Found one right outside of the backdoor at my office this morning. Didn't harvest it because I have no idea what terrible things the lawn guys put in the grass at these corporate lots.
Found a lot of them today, didn't pick any tho, already have dried and frozen at home, and im not super fond of them, flavor is somewhat similar to p. Semilanciata, tastes like pasture xD
What does that mean? Like it taste like pasture? I'm genuinely curious I'm not trying to be rude or anything I only say this because it seems like everyone's rude to each other in the comments that's become like the default.👀 I'm just curious that's all. 😅👍
I use the dried ones to soak up some of the liquid in my beef/tomato sauce when I make lasagna. That hides the flavour nicely if you're not to keen on that.
Hey, could you do a special video please? I live in a remote area, can you suggest some easy mushrooms which can be grown on the lawn / garden? Or maybe on three stamps? And how to do it :) Would be awesome! Thanks
Coprine is not used to treat alcoholism (nor benzocoprine which is another chemical found in Coprinopsis sect. Atramentariae, Alopeciae and Picaceae), it just has the similar effect to disulfiram which is the one used to treat alcoholism.
I have eaten shaggy mane with wine a few times and a few times without, but still made me feel not good when consuming alcohol with it. Too bad because white wine goes really well with it

I've always wanted to try drawing with the mushroom after it starts to decay. The black Inky goo might work as a nice medium for art.
totally! we snagged some ink into a syringe, and will try and let you know the results.

There is a park near me that is covered in these when it rains. This week is a rainy one so I should be slicing these guys up in the next few days.

Ink of these musrooms is good to be used as classical ink. In the nineteenth century, a mycologist used it to write his notes and correspondence!

I've seen them before when I was at my local park, One of them even self-destructed in front of my eyes!

I wonder if you could use the ink as a replacement for squid ink in black pasta?
i think so! haven't done this myself, but I have heard of this being possible.

didnt you make a vid about cultivating shaggy mane ?
yup! ua-cam.com/video/eolb5UDQUac/v-deo.html
You can blanch and freeze or just freeze Shaggy Manes.
Wow
Is the goo edible?
not sure if the goo itself would be considered worth eating... I think it has been used as a vegan "squid ink" but don't quote me on that.
I call it the exploding cigar mushroom lol
Can you eat old, decaying shaggy mane?
probably better to get 'em fresh!
@@FreshCapMushrooms The old shaggy mane looks really black, I am thinking of making dark black sauce out of it, that' s why.
People make “squid ink” pasta with them or just eat them while black. I’m told it changes the flavor, but it’s still safe!
