- It's time for the yearly Pokémon sprite video. These are some just-for-fun videos "analyzing" the best, worst, or just weirdest Pokémon sprites used in games across all generations. This time, I went over the weirdest sprites from the original Japanese releases, before we even saw Red & Blue version released internationally.

the funniest thing about how the hitmonchan "looks like a togekiss watching a doduo taking a dump" is how accurate that statement is

This list is painfully spot-on. The "winner" in worst Red/Green sprites has to be either Ekans or Charizard. Mew is a close third in my book. I know it's supposed to sort of resemble both a cute kitten and a fetus, but Red/Green Mew steers way too far toward fetus and not enough toward cute kitten. Then again, there's a little bit of personal bias coming through since Mew is also my favorite Pokémon, so it's even worse to me that in that one game, Mew has such a sucky sprite. (I think every other Mew sprite is pretty good.) Oddly enough, Mewtwo's sprite in Red/Green matches his artwork better than in Red/Blue, although that one isn't bad since he still looks pretty menacing.
Another Red/Green sprite that I've always found rather hilarious is Moltres' sprite. Now I see where James got his "Flaming Moltres" routine from. xD
The silver lining is they continuously improved the artwork looking at the jump from these games to Pokémon Yellow and then to 2nd Gen, and looking back, the weird sprites gave everyone something fun to talk about.
+MrTopTenList Very true :) it's amazing how many of the sprites became better in Pokémon Yellow alone, not to mention how much better all of them looked in the 2nd gen. Although like another person said I do hope you do a Pokémon Yellow list too, since there were still quite a few sprites that just looked off. A lot of it was due to botched colors, IMO, but there are some that are inexplicably weird. Like how Muk looks like it's attempting to walk on all fours...xD
Alisha C I will definitely do Yellow sprites at some point! I coved Japanese Red/Green, Red/Blue, and Gold/Silver/Crystal, so Yellow version is the next logical step to complete the sprite analysis of the first two generations.
Wigglytuff looks like he found a huge stash of Perfect Apples.

The Wigglytuff and Jigglypuff ones are intentional. It's a reference to the "man on the moon".

think about it: they did pokemon red and green in JPN but in the USA theymade it
pokemon Red and Blue. certain pokemon are only in each version. red has Growlithe as a dog pokemon and blue git Vulpix as a fox for their dog.

Actually the reason why the sprites look wierd. Is beacuse they were created first, before the artwork, so the artwork is based on the sprites but more with revamped details to the designs.
mrtoptenlist, I have an idea for a sprite video: you could do a video about the top ten human character sprites in each generation starting with Pokemon generation 1.

i think mew looks a little off. since he is the 'genetics' pokemon or whatever (sorry english isn't my first language) i think hes supposed to look like a fetus ... thats kind of creepy

Indeed! The Koffing, Mewtwo, Clefable, and Blastoise sprites were some of my favorites.

I definitely plan on it! While some of the sprites were improved, others were pushing the game's limitations too much and looked a bit weird. Plus, I did on one Gold/Silver/Crystal sprites, which were significantly more normal than Yellow's sprites.

The original Pokemon red, green, and blue have aged pretty badly compared to today's standards. The sprites looked weird, the world's were empty, there wasn't a lot to do, the special stats combined into one stat, and the psychic type was broken with no weaknesses as there weren't any ghost type moves to damage them, or dark types.
They are still great games, they were amazing at the time, but the games just haven't aged well over the years, Gold, Silver, and Crystal haven't aged spectacular eaither in my opinion, but there were some things that were fixed, and is good to take a look.
1 year late reply: Psychic still had its weakness to bug types. Not that it mattered much as one was Leech Life which only 3 families could learn, 2 of which were part poison and the last was the Paras line.
The other being Pin Missile which only Beedrill and Jolteon could learn, so not much good that would do, and finally there was Twin Needle which was Beedrills signature move so, yeah... not happening
That ekans sprite makes a lot of sense because snakes unhinge their jaw while trying to eat something too big for their mouth. It looks like ekans is about to eat your pokemon. The eyes are too beady though.
But regardless, it still looks like an unnatural mouth.
the problem with gen1 has to be the fact that every artwork for a gym leader had them with thick eyebrows

The sprites in that are pretty standard for Pokémon, but if there's enough demand, I'll see what I can do. For the sprite video series, Pokémon Yellow is next on the list.
why are all the sprites in the video so blurry? Don't you know that when you enlarge pixels you use nearest neighbour not bilinear

I found out Pokemon Red, Blue, Green, And Yellow are based off Charmander, Squirtle, Bulbasaur, And Pikachu cuz the first 3 is the starters and then Pikachu was Ash's starter as a 4th ^-^

I find it more odd that they kept the Green and red Sprites for the players Pokemon in use. Mew still is a fetus when you send him out.

In that part, when I said a "Togekiss was spying on the natural habitat of a Doduo, along with it doing 'other things,'" that was a fancy way of me referencing the Doduo pooping joke. I just wanted to tell the joke in a different way since a lot of people have pointed that out verbatim.
