Indeed a shame about Butia. Fortunately I have another beautiful blue Butia. I will protect that one better.
The Dassylirion is indeed also very beautiful and also harder than Butia. So less worries about continuing to protect everything. 😉

What a great video! Thank you for sharing, your videos are always inspiring, interesting, educational and honest. Firstly, so sorry to hear of you losing the Butia. I too lost a Butia after the winter of 22/23,it wasn't as large as yours, I didn't protect it, I was over confident. I replaced it with another Butia and bought 2 more as insurance, and so the growing commences all over again..
The Dasylirion is an excellent choice, it's beautiful, almost the same size as your Butia. I was looking forward to seeing the flower spike, I can't think why it died, it looks like it was cut off. I have a Dasylirion in a pot for 3 years now, I'm a bit too nervous about planting it in the ground. It's sat on the gravel path, I may convert part of the gravel path and plant it there, along with the Rostratas. I noticed you planted it in mostly grit and lava, again very wise choice. I looks beautiful, love it.

Thank you very much Maxine, that is nice to hear. 🙏😊
Yes, Butia is indeed a shame. It's kind of the same story as my Washingtonia. The Butia had outgrown its box and I had not built a bigger box yet. That's why it wasn't sufficiently protected in recent winters, with all the consequences... So my own fault.
Luckily I have another Butia that is still beautiful👍
Yes, the Dasylirion is indeed beautiful and also very frost resistant. The flower stem was broken off and not cut. I think the wind was the cause after all. The day before we had heavy gusts of wind... Hopefully you can experience the flowering yourself with your own specimen.
Lots of planting pleasure and greetings 😁

Hello Dimi. A very beautiful Wheeleri. A little tip from me. Check the heart from time to time where the new leaves are produced because of woodlice or earwigs that eat the young, fresh leaves and can cause rot. Greetings from a Swiss exotic plant fan.

      Hi Tim, Thanks.
I know the feeling when you see something new from another enthusiast. 🙈😇 Dasylirion longisimum is the most beautiful and is about the same in terms of frost resistance. Dasylirion longisimum will certainly also return to the garden here. (I lost 1 last year)
They can handle a lot, they just suffer from a lot of moisture. So keep it very dry during the winter and then you will certainly succeed. I also have to protect it, but it rarely or not needs to be heated here, just keep it dry 👍
They are strong & beautiful plants, definitely recommended for zone pushers. This plant should definitely become more popular 😁👍

      Hallo Torsten, vielen Dank.
      Viele Grüße

Yes, I just bought this one because it was so nice & thick, and the price was nice too. Sometimes you unexpectedly come across nice things and you shouldn't miss that opportunity... 😉
The leaves are indeed terribly painful, all small saws...🙈
But also so beautiful. And the good frost resistance is another bonus.
This plant should certainly become more popular, because it is definitely recommended for zone pushers. 👍

I don't think a squirrel did this here. They don't come into the garden or neighborhood here at all. But I like the idea, I hadn't thought of that yet.

Have you considered washing off the nursery soil completely and replacing it with a coarse soil? Root systems on Asparagaceae generally regenerate very well and I would think it would do better without that ball of nursery soil underneath. Most of the large yuccas and dasylirions had their roots cut at some point to fit into the pots they're sold in.

    • @Dimi.Exotic.Garden
      @Dimi.Exotic.Garden  4 місяці тому

@@Tony.795 Hi Tony, well spotted. 👍
I didn't tell it in this video because I don't want too much text in the video to keep it enjoyable to watch. But I intended this in the first place to rinse the clay off the roots. (That is indeed the usual practice here.)
But when I removed the pot I was surprised by the amount of (healthy) roots. I didn't want to lose these roots by incurring too much damage when rinsing in combination with the weight of the plant, etc...
I did have doubts. But I have faith that things will turn out fine. The first 10 cm below the soil surface the trunk is completely clay-free and almost pure lava gravel. Many roots will also come there etc...
The high hill also gives me even more confidence that the remaining clay will not cause any problems. 😊
I know they can easily do without roots etc... But still better to keep good roots as much as possible. There were already so many good roots outside the clay ball, so that made rinsing complicated...

    • @Dimi.Exotic.Garden
      @Dimi.Exotic.Garden  3 місяці тому

Oui malheureusement.
