If available, use a sandblaster cabinet to remove the softer white cambium layer while leaving the harder rinds behind. Besides this contrast, it is safer than wood with fire. My grandfather told me stories about whale oil, kerosene and wood with fire hooked to it. He said the next thing you know, fire jumps to other dry wood like more wood. Next thing you know, everything that is wood is on fire! Then god made water. It is the antagonist of fire. Then everyone goes back to having fun, building and learning new things. It was good.
