  • This video provides an introduction to schizophrenia, its relation to dopamine, the different families of dopamine receptors, psychosis, and anti-psychotic drugs. You have probably heard of both schizophrenia and dopamine, but did you know that they are intimately related?
If you'd like a shorter and less technical version of this topic, check out the other difficulty levels of this video:

Very informative. Allowed me to visualize, recognize, and understand, the how and whys of some of my processing. Being schizotypal myself, the odd speech, and social and emotion deficit reasons given; are tools of knowledge I didn't know. And can now utilize.

That "season of birth" risk factor sounds bizarre to me. What about those who are born in a 2 season climate?

Thank you for this video. As someone with schizophrenia in his mid 30s, this was new to me to understand that decreased D1 signaling in the pfc is responsible for some of the negative symptoms. Are there any ways to increase D1 signaling in the pfc? I know antipsychotics increase d2 signalling in the pfc through 5ht2a antagonism, but what to atypical antipsychotics do to d1 receptors? Would correcting NMDA hypofunction increase D1 signaling?
I found it interesting you mentioning some of the speech patterns in schizophrenia like the word and meaning associations, the word 'sense' being interpreted as 'cents' in your example and the context manipulated. I find I do that a lot but only because its fun to play with words like that for me in conversations, kind of like "dad jokes". It feels like its intent is adding fun and irony to conversations as opposed to a psychopathology. They don't always land though, I'll admit.
I do believe people with schizophrenia can live good lives. It is more difficult to fit into the mold of society and to manage the imposed expectations, but in its own way its also rewarding because you get to explore and integrate things that most people don't bother with. It reshaped my worldview of what's important from the standard discourse to something I align with and feel good doing.

i was wondering what the best medication would be, for a all round dopamine blocker? I would like to know if this would decrease baseline dopamine levels in a person who has been on opioids for 15 years and has a form of post acute withdraw. Thanks

First off, I am not a doctor so this is not medical advice and I can't really give any specific drug recommendations. Regarding your question about reducing baseline dopamine levels in a person who has been on opioids for 15 years and is experiencing post-acute withdrawal, it is essential to note that dopamine blockers might not be the most appropriate treatment. Opioid withdrawal and post-acute withdrawal symptoms are complex and may involve multiple neurotransmitter systems, not just dopamine. It's important to work with a healthcare professional who can provide personalized guidance and develop a tailored treatment plan to address your specific situation.
