I have 2 sheepdogs and live in Southern California and I keep them shaved down year round. Even when the temps are in the 60s, they are still warm so we have to keep them short to be comfortable.
I like Molly's new look. Now have fun brushing her to keep it up. Good job. I bet she appreciates it even if she didn't tell you. Thanks for sharing. Becky from Kansas City
I absolutely love this video! I have an Old English Sheepdog named Molly as well, and we also lived in Ontario a few years ago. This is so relatable. Molly is looking cute!
That's amazing, thank u so much. We also have a baby sister for Molly now given to us by a youtube viewer. Her name is Olive and she has several videos also telling the whole story. Molly gets along great with her cause they're both just sweet dogs.
Wowsa holy moly 😳 can't believe what you guys took off Molly 😖 Great job ! Smokey is super cute laying in all that hair like its his private rug 😆. My Great Pry digs holes too but never that big.
Yeah Smokey’s a cool cat that’s for sure. Truthfully I probably did t do a very good job of maintaining Molly’s coat but it does seem to mat very fast if you let it go. I was worried she was going to get sores. She doesn’t look too bad though eh.
You will be amazed at how fast her hair will grow back. You did a great job for this being your first groom. Molly's comfort is what is most important, not leaving the matted hair. I don't know how much you edited out, but Molly was a really good girl for her first groom. I love how Smokey loved laying in the bucket with the hair from Molly. Just precious.
Thank you Lee. haha it's already starting to get longer. It's really not easy to groom, I think we did ok. We could see that Molly was getting tired during the first session she kept lying down on the table so we stopped and finished off the next day. She was really good though she just hyperventilates a bit lol. Smokey is a really incredible cat he does so many sweet things and you just go awww. Appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment. Nice to know you. Chad.
@@HiddenSpringFarm , I have a Siberian cat who I have to cut back every Summer. He hates to be brushed. I'm not a groomer myself, but I watched some pro groomers to get the idea and now, both of us are quicker at getting his cut done. Because his coat grows back so fast, I give him 3 cuts between late April and October. I love your cats and your channel. Thank you for all you do.
Great job done, Molly will be very happy! I had my 1st OES almost 40 years ago, groomed her weekly for 2 hours to avoid the matting. That worked well, but her summer hair cut was always also a joy to her, and to me ;-) Our new OES puppy is now 10 weeks old and still has to accept the brush to groom her... Hopefully in time she will relax more when I try to brush her fur (hair).
10 weeks eh, good times. My wife seems to be able to calm Molly when bathing, brushing etc and Molly just sits there but she starts breathing heavy like hyperventilating. Molly was very well behaved for her first real groom though. I think the more you groom her and get into that routine she will calm, she's only 10 weeks after all. I really didn't start to brush Molly till after 6 months once the hair really started getting thick. Whats the new pups name?
@@HiddenSpringFarm Molly is a gem, as is our Ollie (and her Kennelname/pedigree name is Whoopi) :-D Wow, so good that your wife could calm Molly for her bath!! And yes I saw how calm Molly was also during her new hairdo! For us (and our neighbours), Ollie's first bath was a decibel overload of barking and howling, although I tried to work as fast and calmly as possible while my man held her calmly. It was not a success apart from the nice fluffly puppy she was afterwards :-)
@@trisjen-6255 haha yeah the more we exposed Molly to water she is getting better now. But still if I turn on the shower for myself she runs away thinking it’s for her… too cute. Hope Ollie is doing well and getting big and strong. 🐶
@@HiddenSpringFarm at times you wonder what's going on in that puppy head eh? :-) Ollie is doing great, thank you. Hope to make a new video soon from her at our veggy garden.
Oh yeah... lots of memories Trimming my OES.... 4 or 5 hour task. Good u started on rear end first, that is the testiest area for dog to allow trimming, and paws. Treats helped with dog fatigue and impatience. I would trim down to a bit longer than 1/2 inch. I would give the boo a break at times if too testy. Sometimes it seemed trimmer would overheat too, gv it a rest too. Could of made a doggie hair pillow !! Then the 10 yr old dog would scamper like a young pup afterwards. 🐶
hey thanks so much, yes Molly does get matted super fast and once she has the simplest of mats you can't even get a brush through. She was pretty patient and calm for her first time too. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment, Chad.
Hello, I so enjoy your videos. I look forward to seeing them every week. I have an 8 month old old English Sheepdog puppy to. Her name is Willow and she is a mess. I live in Snellville Ga and our summers are brutal. I just cant cut her hair for the summer. She loves getting in our pool to cool off. Have a wonderful weekend.
Hi Tonya thank you so much for watching. Willow is an awesome name, she's only a few months younger than Molly. For sure her hair must be getting longer too eh. I love it when they're shaggy though. Nice that Willow swims, I wonder if Molly would go in the water. She's never been around any water other than the tub lol. Have a great one, Chad.
@@HiddenSpringFarm Thank Chad ! I'm back in the saddle now that my dental issues are under control and the hubby is feeling better too. Keep doing what you're doing and you'll live a healthy life and the love you both pour into the farm will continue to reward you 💞 As always ~ much success, rooting for you !!! 😉
You guys and Molly did great for a first time groom! I know what a job it is having done it for years on my sheepdogs. My one used act like a completely different dog when he was shaved. I'm sure Molly feels better now.
haha thanks Stacey, we did well when edited but it took us too long and Molly was getting tired standing there so we split it up into two sessions. Otherwise she was very well behaved for the first time.
This video was so cute with the goslings and Smoky sleeping in the Mollie blanky. I love ❤️ your new summer Mollie and it must feel so freeing for her, especially with that matting not pulling at her skin. Give her a hug 🫂 from me. I can so relate to this conundrum. My kitty was a Chinchilla Persian. After getting her, I found out she was unique in the 🐱 world. She had the undercoat and the unique distinction of having the first layer of body skin loose from her frame. Because of this if I caught a matte it pulled her skin away as well. She absolutely detested being brushed. It got to the point where I had to cut it off. Poor little baby. You both did a great job!!!
Yeah Smokey is super sweet, he's awesome. I think really I didn't do a good enough job of brushing her regularly, but I also think she'll end up getting a shear every year to reset. We'll see how it goes I'm gonna try and do better and get her into a routine. Molly will stand there for me and let me do my thing but it's like she's hyperventilating lol. I didn't even know cats could get like that too, but I guess anything with hair like that can get matted like sheep or alpaca or some breeds of goats. Chad.
After all these years of grooming my OES I can't believe it never occurred to me to use a plastic bag to avoid a big part of the hairy mess lol! Will definitely be using this little trick. Thanks guys!
Haha I did this over 2 sessions. The first session we were covered in hair. Then my Darlin came up with the bag idea and it worked very well. Molly’s hair is growing in nicely now too. Thanks for taking the time to comment, Chad
That's exactly how I'd shave my pups for summer in Arizona. Invested in an expensive set of sheep shears. Worth every penny. Regular dog shears will not cut it, literally. Neighbors used to laugh. Referred to my shaved dogs as a "head on a stick" because I tended to leave more fuzz on their heads than the rest of their body.
It's actually a lot harder than it looks to get the coat uniform all over, but the good thing is it just grows back. Sheep shears would do the trick for sure.
You have both done a awesome job on Ms Molly. Agreeably groomers are costly but looks like if you keep on top of it with her you wont have to spend out to groom her. :) Have a blessed wkend.
hey thanks Kate. The price quote for Molly in her condition was over $200 and more than a month away, so we just did a DIY. Hopefully she doesn't look too bad but we think its ok...its grows fast too lol. I've got an undercoat brush to start off with while the hair is growing but then we'll make it a routine.
yeah Smokey is very sweet and he might even think Molly is his Mum. Yeah I've heard people say they do ok in smaller spaces cause they're lazy when they get older but If any OES puppy is super energetic like Molly I'm not so sure. Thank you for watching Susan. Chad.
Beau doesn't care much to be brushed these days but we fight through. I find the best tool for me is a wide tooth comb. I use that mostly then for any problem areas switch to a smaller tooth comb and a pin brush, working at tangles with my fingers. I've read how often the OES needs to be brushed. I try to work in short sessions with the wide tooth, like 15 minutes at a time in the evening as we watch TV or just down time. My goal is daily but often it lands every 2 to 3 days. I don't let it go farther. These double coats can be hell to maintain but I wouldn't trade Beau for any other breed.
That’s the thing about Molly, her hair is like impossible to maintain while working and starting a farm but you’re so right on I wouldn’t trade her for anything. I got to get on a kind of routine though more for me than for her 😆
I was Wondering how do you and your Darling (aka) Wife protect yourselves from ticks and other dangerous insects to humans? Do you just spray yourselves every day? 😊. Absolutely Love Your Channel, Thank you for sharing.
We don’t really worry about ticks unless the grass get too long. Ricks are not a huge problem but if course were mindful of them. The dogs get something called Nexguard to prevent fleas n ticks as they’re always lying on the ground.
Well, just looked it up. Supposed to use a number 4 blade and do it in the spring and fall. I have a double coated dog. I make sure to brush her every day. Cause those knots hurt them
I think the clippers I got was a number 10 blade. Anyways it seemed to do ok. We definitely gonna get her into a routine of daily brushing at least to try to minimize the mats.
Does it REALLY get that warm in Ontario in the summer? For what, 3 weeks? i'm in northern massachusetts, U.S. and it's not hot all summer. BTW, you're shearing/grooming will get better w/ practice.
haha Michael I've been to the Philippines several times during summer and let me tell you our summers are easy. with the humidity it must feel like 50c over there. But here we do get a few months of hot weather (hot for us Canadians lol) and I mean humid enough that I'm always sweatin. Usually starts to get really warm late May until around late Aug. We really did take too long to shave her down, but you're probably right the more we do it we'll get better. Cheers bud, Chad.
lol yeah it was tough to use the clippers on her head so we ended up trimming with some scissors the next day, plus we were taking forever to get it done lol Molly was getting antsy. She does seem to be enjoying the relief though.
have to cut every 30 days. butt, privates and under side every 2 weeks. its a hassle but need too or cut a tit or skin if dont. good luck got 3 siblings and 3 rescue old timers.
What a precious video!
Well done you two ! The most important is, she’s feeling comfortable afterwards.
I always look forward seeing Molly in your videos. She is still beautiful with her new summer look!
Thanks Patty, Molly seems to be relieved a bit. But yeah she's still the cutest and It'll grow back fast I'm sure.
