12-Year-Old Boy Brain-Dead After ‘Blackout Challenge’

- A 12-year-old boy is on life support after his parents say he may have tried a social media stunt known as the “Blackout Challenge.” Joshua Haileyesus was found unconscious in the bathroom of his family’s Colorado home by his brother. His father says Joshua appears to have tried to choke himself with a shoelace. He was taken to the hospital, but a week later doctors told his father that there is nothing more that medicine can do for his son. Inside Edition Digital’s Mara Montalbano has more. #InsideEdition

In the early 90s we used to hyperventilate ourselves by breathing rapidly and then hold our breath while someone picked us up from behind. A friend of mine tried it and she passed out onto a glass table. She was ok but that scared the hell out of me how easily someone can get hurt doing stupid things.
I’ve done this. I think a lot of people have and I’m not proud of it.
90's for me as well. It was all the rage at my high school. I did it with 2 friends one night. Never did it again!
thats the "challenge" they were talking about. but it has nothing tobdo with tying something around your neck. its easier to blame someone else instead of admitting your child killed themselves
This is why having no friends (aka someone like me) is better than having fake, idiotic friends. My high school has "nerdy" people making up the vast majority, all i can say is I'm glad middle school is done. I'm doing surprisenly well on my grades... Probably because public middle school stress with immature kids everywhere is now a nonfactor.
I'm 49 I remembered that but I turned 21 in 1992 but I heard other people and kids were doing that I didn't even do it at that point I was focused on my future.

When the teachers found out we all got in trouble because they were afraid someone might not wake up.. We stopped after the doctors told us how dangerous it was... Poor family, stupid social media challenge... just sad all around.
That last thing you don't want to happen is to pass out
How did it feel? Why kids seems to be addicted to it?
@@systemofcolorfulpills I do remember it did feel euphoric but after we got talked to we stopped.
This blackout thing is new to me. Can you please explain how this is done? I mean, for me there's no way I can hold my breath to the extent of being unconscious 😳😳
@@floraralte-thawnthuhuang not going to tell you because I don't want kids trying it.
Tbh if there was a shoelace then I dont think it was a challenge I think you know what it meant. I've had my fair share of suicidal events but thank God that he made me stay here. My prayers go out to him, and may he live bc he has so much to live for.
1. this kid was trying to commit suicide (R.I.P.) 2. never heard of this "blackout challenge" in my life before
Wrong
Ikr, so sad he wanted to kill himself
Lol OP is wrong
just because you haven't heard of it doesn't mean its not real
Poor child, I wish this had never happened my heart goes out to his family
This really speaks to me. Back when I was in camp I think it was 2016 and one of our cabin members decided to play a little game called the blackout challenge. I’ve seen the challenge with my own eyes. It not something people should be doing to themselves. I’m sorry to the family. It’s heartbreaking to see what people do to themselves. I’m sorry for this kid and to his family. I’m sure he was a great kid.
Anyone else remember a couple years ago when the Blue Whale challenge blew up? All these people creating stupid challenges and immature kids trying them out is heartbreaking.
The world is so messed up now.
idiotic*
Never heard of it fortunately. Sounds pretty stupid though.
@@boilingpot3285 Valid point 🙌
@@SleepingSoldier Trust me, u don't ever want to hear about it.
The world has always been messed up it just got worse!
Poor kid no 12 year old should ever feel this way Rest In Peace 🙏🏼💙
This is so sad. Don't do social media challenges guys. They don't make you look cool... they make you look dumb and can end up ending your life. 💔 My heart goes out to his family!
Lord I ask you to help this young boy and give him a second chance, I hope and have faith that he wakes up .
Your praying ain’t gone fox that
Dude, it's quite literally called brain *death*. He's never waking up.
Social media challenges should be policed like political ads! This is heart breaking! May God be with this family!!
Imagine a world if social media didn't exist, everything would be so peaceful.
No
Y'all-
I know Joshua, we had class together and would talk a lot, and he's an amazing kid. He's just curious. My heart is breaking that this has happened to him, and seeing the comments about how he's stupid for doing this challenge is terrible. As I said, he's just curious, and these kinds of things can happen. I'm in doubt about if this was even an attempt at the challenge or an attempt at suicide, but either way, calling someone stupid for participating in this, especially a CHILD who can easily get manipulated by social media, is just plain evil. If you're going to blame anyone, blame the person who started this trend.
And please, whether you're religious or not, PLEASE pray for him. Even though there's a 0% chance of survival, God is the same God that woke a dude up from the dead. He can perform a miracle for Josh.
I can’t imagine the trauma finding your brother in a room almost dead 🥺
That is stupid, why would someone do a challenge that can actively put you life at risk.
About a year ago. A student at my school did the same challenge during lunchtime. He went unconscious while standing up, hit his head on one of the benches, and started to have a seizure. The ambulance was called. Thankfully he is alive. I give my prayers to the family
This is one of the main reasons why i don't do Tiktok. ITS TOO DESTRUCTIVE!
Giving condelences to the family who lost their blessing.❤
Edit: This is the reason why Tiktok is banned on Italy because of this stupid challenge...
A 10 year old girl who also tried this social media challenge...its too sad
Why do people think tik tok started this??? its been around since the 90s
This challenge has been around for years and has been done on every social media (including YT) yet somehow you think blaming tiktok is gonna help prove your misinformation right?
@@jymere1445 tik tok popularized the trend
@@aud6r popularized the trend for today's time for gen z to see

This is so sad💔💔 Social media has really messed up the minds of the youth
tbf if he tried this he mighta been brain dead to begin with
Rest In Peace king we love you🥺☹️ never do dumb things for tik tok! Things like this can happen hopefully he’s not really dead
Always sad 😥
I’m sorry he’s not dead I thought brain dead was dead but I’m praying for him

@@qwerty6304 it said he did a tik tok trend so it means it was for tik tok

This is so tragic, please don’t do challenges like this kids!! You matter. I hope everyone can see this ❤️🖤
(PS: if anyone is struggling with anything at all, please comment and I’ll try my best to respond! I know it’s very difficult during these times ❤️)
yes we need to get this message heard from everyone I feel bad for his family may he rest in peace
Natural selection tbh
Cringe
I’m not struggling with anything but hi
It's very kind of you to want to help others, hopefully you have that kind of person in your life for you as well ❤
I really felt the fathers pain, I’m not a parent, I’m only 18 but this made me cry.
awww ur be a good one
i feel he was trying to take his own life because using a shoe lace for it is unusual
No a shoe lace kinda is not the best thing to kill yourself with. I've tried and all it did was make my face blue, eyes red, dizzy and a red mark on me. But who knows maybe he tried so hard to complete that challenge he won
@@piggyxd6393 ive tried a shoe lace to so i suppose you're right but that's not usual for it
How is trying to commit suicide by rapping a shoe lace around your neck similar to holding your breath
Damn bro he was spitting bars at the shoe lace and the shoe lace tried choking him out
@@notimportant3255 lmao
Just shows you how much parental control over your child's phone is critical until they mature its a heartbreaking story 💔
It’s natural selection at this point
But I could feel the pain in the father’s voice. A parent should never outlive their child.
Very true 👍
This is why I hate TikTok, risking your life just for “fame”
this isnt a challenge it is a suside atttempt
Play stupid games win stupid prizes.
......... Wtf is wrong with you?
it’s the truth sadly
shut up
I mean you're right...
