I've looked at a lot of DIY saw vise plans on-line and I gotta say this one looks very good. No leather straps, no need for auxiliary clamps, can make it high enough to get the saw up where my old eyes (and tired back) won't complain. Nice job, Rex. Thank you.

Some years ago I built a low fence around my garden to keep the dogs out of it. Just to practice, I hand cut half laps and some dovetails into my fence rail. What can I say, I had the time and wanted to do wood working.
I did some sharpening on an old saw a few weeks ago. This would definitely make it much easier!

Tenon saw shoot-out? I'm excited! I ordered a Spear & Jackson recommended by Paul Sellers, and it works really well. Maybe that's one to include :)

Finally broke down and got a cheap "Japanese Pull Saw" at Harbor Fright.
I have to say, for a cheap saw it does rather well. A bit thicker than I think it should be. But, it definitely does the job it was designed for. I find myself grabbing it whenever I need to cut just to see how the process works for me.
I can honestly say that I will be on the lookout for a good one.

I've been watching all of your videos over the last week. Today, I descided I would subscribe to your Patreon... and wouldn't ya know it, they're having issues left and right. BUT! I think I finally managed to get it all set and done! I have learned so much from your videos and you have really reignited my interest for wood crafts! This has also been a bit of a trip down memory lane, as when I was a kid, my dad did a LOT of this. It's been so long and have forgotten most of what he taught me. So, Thank you for everything Rex!

That's awesome! Mine is waaaaay more crude. Basically a slightly upgraded two pieces of wood method with 30 degree lines drawn on it for visual assistance.
Nothing wrong with that. This one is more complex than necessary!
This vice has many more applications that just for saw blades. I could see this vice adapted for leatherworking, metalworking, and fine-woodworking projects too!

I haven't sharpened my own saws yet but I can't help but want to build this vise.
You can totally do it. It wasn't quick, but it wasn't difficult.
If I didn't already have a saw vise I'd build this... Heck, I might build one anyway...
As I commented to James Wright yesterday, I need one of these now. While at Goodwill yesterday, I came upon a folded steel back backsaw. 28 inches long and 6 inches to the back. It has 2 screws missing from the handle and needs a sharpen. it has those teeth that look like a hardpoint saw, but a triangular file cuts. There is a thing on the back in front of the handle that is either for a second handle or a stop for a metal miter box.

Those joints would be beautiful for outside furniture! I think about making chairs and benches for the balcony and I guess I'm going to do it this way! 😃

Well - I've made the Lie Nielsen one - and having watched this video, I'm defo going to make this one. It looks like it overcomes several of the 'flaws' in the LN design= specifically gripping and moving the saw. Impressive work as ever Rex :-)

I made a saw vise a while back based off of other videos I watched. It turned out like crap. I have a lower bench since i do a lot of hand planing and I wanted something to raise my saws up. I will have to give this one a try.
Oh yeah I totally need to make a special vice for my vintage saw. That I dont have and can't afford.
The vintage saw that you buy, along with a bunch of other rusty things, from someone clearing out old 'rubbish' for next to nothing ...

Decent to good cast iron ones cost like 8-20 bucks.
I like making my own stuff but vintage cast iron is soooooooooo pretty.
I have an old Diston saw vise that I bought online but the casting is so bent I can’t even get the saw into the jaws without prying them apart with a shim. Completely useless as it has zero grip in the centre of the jaws, so I’m in desperate need of one of these. I have the skills to reverse engineer the construction of this project but because I’m a long time fan of your work I bought the plans off your store anyway :) love your work Rex!
If you're still doing dovetails then there is a easy magnetic dovetail jig that you can make with scraps and a magnet. Adrian preda has a video to make one but he got the idea from David Barron.

Is these saw vices are just used to sharpen the saws ? I don'T see other utility to that outside of possibly vice it turn it around and saw with the vice on to be sure to not cut too far. Sry. just felt on bunch of wood saw vice builts so... was asking myself if there's other use than just sharpening saws.
Hey Rex, at 8:45 you show the arms that connect the two jaws. Wouldn't it make sense to turn the dovetails the other way? I mean, the way you have them they won't resist pulling out of the back board, only from spreading horizontally. Am I misunderstanding the direction of the forces on that arm? It seems like the clamping forces would tend to pull those arms outward, and the way you have the dovetail doesn't seem to me help with that any more than a square half-lap.
I'm not an engineer, so take my answer for what it's worth: the toggle clamp pushes in on the cross-piece and that wants to force the arms out, so the wedging action of the arms resists that. I *think* I designed it to resist the strongest force.
Those arms are being compressed by the clamp. The block the clamp is on is what is in tension. If you wanted to reinforce the clamp block attachment, you might add a wedged tenon where it attaches to the jaw.
I had the same though Ethan. I felt like turning the dovetail in the white oak the other way would resist the outward pulling force of the lever arm. Since the toggle clamp is pushing in at the top it puts outward pressure at the lever arm where the bolt is.
Great build Rex! Always fun to solve everyday problems with stuff that is just taking up space in the shop.

Hey Rex a lot of people have curved/bowed handsaws and don’t even know it make a PSA to get them to look and see if they do. That being said, for those people you should learn how to straighten one and show the people.

Hey, Rex, you must be psychic! I was just playing with dovetail half-laps today! (I used it to make a push stick for the table saw). Never thought of using them before, but they seem to work really well. That looks like a very superior saw vise. Do you think that toggle clamp idea would work for, say, a moxon / bench vise - might be handy for making dovetails...
Thats a great tip. Practice your new joints/techniques on shop projects. I always try to do that whenever I can. It’s amazing how many times I thought something was going to be super tricky and a hassle only to try it on a shop project like. Wow that was easier then I thought
Interesting project. My saw vice is a bit of 1" x 1" with a hole drilled a saw cut to the hole. Goes in my vice. I might get tempted to build something nicer... at some point.

While I understand the ease and convenience of buying by mail, I just got a bunch of blacksmithing tools by mail. I get my hardware from a local industrial hardware store. I have it that day and i don't have to wait. I am really enjoying your content and plan to use your instruction to work on my projects for home. I was a rough carpenter and floor guy for most of my adult life. Now retired, but still needing to work with my hands.

This is super cool…but I wonder if all you have is smaller saws like that backsaw if you wouldn’t be better building/using a simple moxon vice, which also has other, non-saw uses. If you have lsrger saws you’d still need the saw vice.

That board-mounted sharpening tool you made to clamp into a leg vise reminded me of the various hardy-hole tools that can be mounted into the hardy-hole of an anvil, like Torbjorn uses. Are there any other such woodworking tools that could be 'modular' like that? IE, little handy things, mounted on boards, that you swap into the leg vice as you need them? I've seen Pask Makes do some of that kind of stuff, and I've always wondered.
You make a good point about hardy tools; they are very modular. I think jigs in general are swapable in that way, although more in the power-tool world. I've made more table-saw jigs than I care to think about.
I wonder if you could do the same thing with your jigs and tools with the dog hole drill outs in the top of your work bench. Then you don't need a vise specifically to use those tools.

To be honest, I think diy pipe clamps would be amazing, versatile, you dont need 10 different clamps just for size, but a stack of pipes, and some pipe clamps to attach to them

Hey Rex! I watched this Video when it came out an it took me 4 years to build up the skills and courage to build myself my own saw vise. It turned out ugly af but it works and I'm mighty proud of it.

Well it took a year but I’ve finally finished this project - and Rex I am absolutely thrilled by it. It works as well as you say and glad I came back to the video a year later to see why you put that shallow hole to catch the clamp. I couldn’t bring myself to leave those dovetails raised above the surface. With them all planed flush it looks even better, albeit may be a bit weaker. Next up - cleaning up and sharpening those saws I’ve been buying since starting this - and great to see you have a vide for that too. Keep at it Rex - you’ve taught me more than anyone else and inspired me your plans too.
For an added challenge you could build your own toggle clamp (also using wood from the scrap pile). Izzy Swan has an excellent build video at ua-cam.com/video/T8CtHnCZjzg/v-deo.html. Just an idea.
Rex I`m trying to find a toggle clamp as big as 120 mm . Is there a number or code for the right one? The pdf only shows the wood measurement nearby. Thanks for the diagrams .

Rex you probably can sharpen that dozuki saw even though the blade is disposable the teeth usually are not impulse hardened on them I have a saw just about like that one I have been sharpening for over 25 years so it can be done.
