What puzzles me about the catalogue is the numbering of the objects in it.. Some objects on that catalogue are so bright that they are visible to naked eye even from Bortle 5-6 skies. E.g. Orion nebula and Pleiades and those are numbered 42 and 45!! They could have been M1, M2..

Great video. If you are in an astronomy club affiliated with the astronomical league you can participate in several programs to see every Messier object. Upon completion you will get a certificate.

This is highly intruiging for a layman such as i am, when it comes to Space in general, Astrophotography in particular, i absolutely adore watching the night sky whenever i get the chance, which is usualy most nights, this made me think, if the light polution in a given area is manageable enough, could one observe the majority of the Messier celestial objects without a telescope, if one knows where to look for the celestial bodies/objects, by eyesight alone ?
Might be an utterly silly question, but, il ask since i do not have any before knowledge.
This is inspiring sir, thank you very much for uploading and having an way of explaining that intrigues.
    God Bless sir

"could one observe the majority of the Messier objects by eyesight alone ?"
No. Some of them, but not the majoritiy.
You can see with the naked eye quite many star-clusters, even under a somehow lightpolluted sky (let' say at a magnitude of 20 to 21).
You can see the lagoon-nebula and the galaxy M33 and M31 under a quide good sky. And the galaxy M81 under a nearly perfect sky.
Messier himself sufferd on light-pollution, because some 10 to 20 years before he started, it became a law, that the streets of Paris had to be lit at night, a city with about 850.000 inhabitans around 1780.
And of course his sky was heavily polluted: Tousends of (coal-)fires burned uncontrolled at private houses and the starting industry.
Messier himself did not observed all "his" object. He found 38 of these 110 (all the others were discoverd an discribed by others) And he ovserved about 90 of "his" objects.

Hi Nico, amazingly short lecture about Messier Catalogue. As I live in Southern Hemisphere, what kind of book would you recommend to observe the sky from this location? I appreciate getting some guide lines. Thanks & clear skies.

The Caldwell Catalog was designed as a short list (109 objects) like the Messier catalog, but for the Southern Hemisphere 👍

Can’t wait for your next video, cause I’m in a bit of a drought for deep sky objects to take a picture of. I’m a super light polluted area and only have a DSLR Camera and no other equipment. Wondering if I can get a picture of those galaxies maybe.

As usual, a great video. I'm a bit surprised, however, that you did not mention that Messier discovered (or re-discovered) the Crab Nebula (M1) while looking for the return of Halley's Comet.
