I saw Mark while he was filming this and met him afterwards and he was a gentleman. My wife and I planned our trip to Texas (from Ireland) and used his videos for food suggestions and everything he recommended was amazing. Great videos Mark can't wait for more.
I am in Co. Durham but used to live in Texas. My parents loved to visit and especially to go to San Antonio...I don't know about you but I think Texans are the warmest and friendliest people ever.
I’ve only been to San Antonio once. Absolutely loved it!! We really enjoyed Vietnamese Food while in San Antonio! San Antonio has such a diverse food scene! Can’t wait to visit again.
The Pearl is a great area to eat, it has a ton of restaurants and has a Culinary Institute on site. Food there is amazing. Also brisket is a must, 2M is my favorite. YT channel Texas Eats is a show by a local news channel in San Antonio which has a lot of the best places to eat in and around San Antonio.
When I was a young, broke college student, I would take flour tortillas and fry them in a skillet with butter. They would puff up like a puffy taco shell. Then I would put Wolf Brand chili and grated cheese on them and have like a puffy tostada. Super cheap and pretty freaking good lol
I was in San Antonio last September, and I ate at Crockett Tavern. I had a brisket grilled cheese with a blackberry lemonade (mixed with moonshine). Both were amazing. I didn’t get a chance to get the puffy tacos, but we are going back soon, so we will be sure to get some. 😋
I went to a high-end, tourist-magnet Tex-Mex restaurant right on the Riverwalk. I don’t care if it wasn’t the hipster choice - the food was great and the guacamole was some of the best I’ve ever had.
So true, San Antonio is not just a fascinating town, with things to see that are super-important in the history of our country; it's also a delicious city!
I love the enthusiasm in the video! I've lived 30 miles south of San Antonio for 25 years. We tend to stay away from downtown and all the tourists but when we feel like being a tourist we go to Market Square and Mi Tierra. We love Don Pedros on the south side but its a little sketchy on the south side so please don't leave any belongings in your car to get stolen. They have the best margaritas and of course the mariachis. Broadway street is also a must! Good Time Charlies has the best chicken fried steak and margaritas and its a local spot. Also the Smoke Shack with its brisket grilled cheese. These restaurants have been around forever so they have to be good. With those 3 you have tex-mex, BBQ and southern, but seriously don't underestimate Broadway street for its restaurants. a lot of people like to go to the Pearl restaurants but Ive heard they're overrated and pricey. Ive been to the Pearl stables for a seminar and it is gorgeous in there. Also a visit to the Tower of Americas is a must and the restaurant is great when I've been but its been awhile, also very touristy but worth it for the views. I believe you can drink at the bar without a reservation and without paying for admission to the top. For a basic breakfast taco, go to Bill Millers and ask for a bean and cheese or a carne guisada, I promise you won't be disappointed. Chachos Nachos is another hot spot, they have ginormous nachos you can share with a whole table. It's a little gross like the floors are sticky but the nachos are amazing :)
I should have known you'd have a channel like this. SA is my home city and it's become extremely diverse for a reason. You did a great job of covering the 'basics' as I call it- Tex-Mex, Chicken Fried Stake (along with our Texas steaks and bbq), and German (thanks for showing Schillos, I love that place). We also have Italian, Chinese, Mediterranean, Japanese, etc. Last year I found a French Patisserie/Cafe downtown near Travis Park that opened in 2020. Owner is from Normandy and brought his French cooking with him. If you're open to suggestions Mark, I have plenty, especially when I like trying new things myself. You are right about the Chicken Fried Steak being a cousin on Schnitzel. When German immigrants came here, since there was more beef, they would use that instead of pork or veal (since that wasn't as common). If I had to pick my fav restaurant in San Antonio, it be the Chinese restaurant Hung Fong. It's the oldest Chinese restaurant in Texas and it's still owned by the same family that founded it just after WWII. It has a neon flag on the ceiling with only 48 stars on it hehe. Very affordable place to eat. My family has been going there for generations. Oh if you ever come here during the Holidays, tamales are mandatory to eat since it's considered a Christmas tradition here hehe.
Another addition to add as far as restaurants go: Burnt Bean in Seguin. It’s in the top 5 of bbq spots for Texas monthly, and the chef was a James beard semi-finalist for Texas. The food is phenomenal!
Sadly, by the time Texas Monthly has discovered and proclaimed it as "one of the best" it is already overrun and probably shrinking from the very things that made it famous.
wow you missed 2 major food gems in San Antonio. Empenada's we have probably 3 of the best empenada places in the US right here in san antonios. Fat Tummy and La Che empenadas. The other is BBQ specializing in barbacoa. One of the most hidden gems is 2m smokehouse.

Highly recc tre trattoria: nestled inside a museum and has a great view of the river scorpion: super artsy gorgeous spot with inspiring food thai dee: serving Thai cuisine enthusiasts the best sari sari: the best intro to Filipino food Honorable mentions: Fat Tummy Empanadas, La Panederia, The Breadbox, Folklores coffee house, Mr. Juicy, & Barbaro!
Good video! Having lived here for the last 10 years, and spending a couple of years of Army time here, I have a few suggestions for places and things to eat. I actually live up in the Hill Country north of San Antonio so I either go into northern San Antonio along the US Hwy 281 Corridor or go over to New Braunfels. BBQ! You didn't mention it at all. I did a couple of BBQ competitions when I lived in Utah in the early 2000's, grew up in Kansas City, lived in DFW for 15 years and so on... Brisket is king here in TX. For my money, Texas Pride on Loop 1604, way out on the eastern fringes of San Antonio is the best!! And it has a really cool atmosphere! Around town there are a few Rudy's BBQs. Those are good everyday BBQ places - but don't serve fries. In fact, most San Antonio area BBQ places do not serve fries so be forewarned! Avoid Bill Miller's BBQ at all cost!! It basically tastes like boiled beef dipped in BBQ sauce. As for Tex Mex I have 3 staples... Dos Rios in New Braufels. Fantastic food and some of the best home made salsa around the area. Lupe's on US Hwy 281 is very good as well, but the closer you get into town the more crowds and wait time you have to deal with. Then there is Mamacita's on the I-10 service road near Callaghan Rd. The food is great, drinks are fairly priced, and it's not as crowded as most of the places around San Antonio. If you're looking for good old Texas comfort food nothing tops Antler's in Spring Branch on TX Hwy 46. They have awesome chicken fried steak and home made (lumpy) mashed potatoes. The place is appropriately named as they have deer mounts and antler racks all over the place. They are expanding their dining areas so you sometimes have a wait right now (mid-January 2023). The absolute BEST burgers in town are at Chester's! There is one on Loop 410 near the airport, 1 up US Hwy 281 near Thousand Oaks, and 1 in Universal City near Randolph Air Force base (in fact if you make a right turn coming out of the parking lot you will be at the main gate to post in 2 or 3 blocks!). They have fresh cut fries and homemade onion rings that are to die for!!! That should be done in another couple of months, weather permitting. San Antonio area is indeed a food lover's paradise!! Come on down and see us y'all!! If you are coming down this way and want any more tips, please message me by replying to this and I'll gladly share what I know.
+1 on Antlers for Texas comfort food. I never eat "ranch" salad dressing but theirs is homemade and it makes a difference. They also have excellent enchiladas. On Mexican food, as a San Antonio native I would choose much differently than you Bill. Too many good ones to mention many of which are small, but strongly recommend El Chaparral which has two locations, both far Northside. Thanks for all your wonderful travel reviews Mark from a long time subscriber. Of the downtown tourist area Tex-Mex, Mi Tierra is dependable and has a wonderful Panaderia.
Dude next visit, if you haven't already, you gotta have a Big Red Margarita, a Red Capsicum (bell pepper) Margarita and a Daqui-rita !! The Mango as well as the Jalapeño Versions are just as great.
When coming to S.A., please be prepared to explain what it is you have in mind when you ask, "what's a good Mexican restaurant to visit?" The answers can vary wildly depending on who you ask. First off, Tex-Mex, or Mexican? Are you looking for a traditional atmosphere (Touristy)? Perhaps great food at cheap prices (Taquerias), or a cartoonish take on what you have heard about Mexican food/culture (Think amusement parks/ frat parties celebrating Cinco de Mayo)? Are you looking to impress guests (High-end $$$), or are you eating strictly for your own personal preferences? These things matter; and, beforehand, maybe watch a UA-cam video, or two, to find out where you land in this conversation. Either way, we gotcha covered. 👍
Hmm, so UA-cam knows that I'm traveling to San Antonio tomorrow. And this video magically appears as the first video on my news feed. Funny thing is I booked my trip on my company laptop and there's nothing to connect with my personal accounts.
I feel like the Riverwalk is not the place to find good Texas food. Those are mostly chain restaurants down there, and very expensive. Go off the beaten path and find a little mom and pop Tex-Mex place made of pink stucco. That's where the goods are.
Let’s be honest, foreigners eat the puffy tacos, normal locals don’t care about them stop overhyping them there’s so many great food before the puffy tacos show up on the list
I got some breakfast tacos from Pete's and they were so salty I could barely eat them! I know they are popular here, but I'm not sure why! Maybe I just had a bad cook!
'Sukhumvit 77," Thai food! Wow, had a friend tell me about this new place that just opened. Incredible delicious Thai food. Located in Universal City (northeast San Antonio) - Corner of 1604 & Pat Booker. Worth the short drive if you live in the area and are looking for great Thai Food at a fair price. And they did a super job with the decor - classy look and very clean.
A Big Red Margarita? As Texan as I am even I had to do a double take, pause this video and reread that menu. They haven't migrated down here to Corpus Christi yet.
Yeah San Antonio is great for a lot of things. So long as you don't mind the possibility of being brutalized arrested and denied basic human rights by the police for the crime of wearing clothes.
I saw Mark while he was filming this and met him afterwards and he was a gentleman. My wife and I planned our trip to Texas (from Ireland) and used his videos for food suggestions and everything he recommended was amazing. Great videos Mark can't wait for more.

Texas is a bucket list destination for me
It's worth a visit
It's the best.
My "can't miss" for tourists is the Iron Cactus on the river. If you're not on the river, MI Tierra has a great atmosphere.
San Antonio and the Riverwalk are my happy places. I live in the Texas panhandle and we go to San Antonio almost every summer for vacation.
My favorite city in Texas!!!
I’ve been to El Paso no comparison to San Antonio Texas at all.
Very dry like their food is also dry!,!!!
I’ve only been to San Antonio once. Absolutely loved it!! We really enjoyed Vietnamese Food while in San Antonio! San Antonio has such a diverse food scene! Can’t wait to visit again.

Loved San Antonio! The place on the Riverwalk with colored umbrellas had good food. We ate there twice since it was by the hotel.
When I was a young, broke college student, I would take flour tortillas and fry them in a skillet with butter. They would puff up like a puffy taco shell. Then I would put Wolf Brand chili and grated cheese on them and have like a puffy tostada. Super cheap and pretty freaking good lol

P.S. Since I see another comment recommending the place I went to, I’ll name it: Iron Cactus.
I've eaten there before too :)
@@StamfordBridgeI'm five months late, but Iron Cactus is the least bad restaurant on the Riverwalk. Good choice!

You mean how white people took the land from the Tejano annexed their country and stole their oil? Great history san antonio!
