"Val-halla at your boy and we'll flyte it out." Look up the Viking tradition of "flytes." Vikings actually had competitions where they would insult each other in poetry.
Which Loke was the best of the gods at so the Line ``You´re joking, Loke must have writen your lines´´ becomes a compliment if anything
So....in a way
battlerap was invented by vikings ?
I never knew
Holy shit. He mentioned the origin of battle rap and scru said nothing! He must see this comment.
@Goblin GangGaming then the lokasenna translation can't be correct because i am Reading quite a few sexuel things from whoring, pissing in the mouth and accusations of some Alabama loving
@@aidenyoo2906 No one ever realizes I have been speaking the truth on this for years lol Been saying how this is one of if not the oldest version of battle rap. I think some people are legit upset it was white people that did it so they refuse to comment on it.
This battle is probably one of their best when you just look at the writing and bars overall. Incredible.
Big facts
Couldn't agree more.its in my top 5
Alexander Ekstrand shaka vs caesar was a good one too
Alexander Ekstrand And the LEGO
And the animation. This is art on top of more art
To me Thor won right at the start with the 'shapeshifting rapist' line, and mentioning Flytes was a sick norse history reference. Flyting was where poets would trade barbs in their poetry, basically the original rap battles.
Loki was also considered the best at them, in which the "Loki must have written your lines" becomes a compliment.
@@GameGuy667 More like saying Thor needed a ghostwriter since Loki is the best at flyting
@@GameGuy667 well the joke was That thor must've Been Joking When talking about how great he is and since loki is the trickster God u would make that connection
I think Thor definitely won. No questions asked. But I will say, Zeus didn’t get absolutely annihilated because he stood his ground. That’s where I’m coming from.
Shapeshifting rapist was a legit diss. But seeing as he was coming back from being exposed as a cross dresser flirting with loki with a dad that hung himself WHILE being belittled for being a little boy fighting a king... he sorta had to pull something hard out. I personally feel Zeus won. But it definitely was a close battle.
Since you talk about rebuttal, i feel you missed Thor's rebuttal at the end about the "here take these drachma for your eyes". In Greek funerals, you would place two drachma coins (the money in ancient Greece) over the eyes of the dead when they were buried so they could use them to pay the ferryman to carry them over the river Styx. It was a rebuttal to Zeus's viking funeral jab. To me that was a fire line.
that whole verse was clutch. OPA was a little bit of a hidden gem. from wikipedia opa is a common Mediterranean emotional expression. ... In Greek culture, the expression sometimes accompanies the act of plate smashing. It can also be used to express enthusiasm, shock or surprise, or just after having made a mistake.
@@Thronnos Not just Greek, it's used in post Soviet States as well

This battle was electrifying
I see what you did there? Because, they are both The Gods of Thunder.
Moise Picard nah, Thor is the Norse god of thunder, but Zeus is the Greek god of the entire skies and everything to do with it (and also the king of the gods).
@@sscorpiun6135 Whose primary weapon is a Lightning Bolt.
CryoJnik exactly, not a fucking thunder clap 👏🏻
I SEE YOU EVERYWHERE! we must like the exact same things or im on UA-cam way too much
I love watching people react to this battle, because most people assume that Zeus has it in the bag after his first verse, and then Thor's first LINE of his first verse immediately corrects that assumption.
Thor turns this thing around I was like duuuude😳😳😳
This dude has transformed the way I analyze these battles
No Park Same here
Yeah, one thing is lore-wise, and another is rap theory (so to say).
The "cross dressing neck in a noose" refers to the time Thor had to disguise himself as a woman to get Mjolnir (the hammer) back after it had been stolen by a giant. Also Odin is known as the "lord of the hanged" because he hanged himself for several days on a branch of the world tree to gain knowledge.
That is an interesting way to get knowledge. I just hang myself for recreational purposes
@@theannouncer5538 The Norse mythology is pretty whacky. Loki made way for Sleipnir (the fastest horse to exist) by disgusing himself as a mare and distracting a builder's horse to win a bet... however he got impregnated and gave birth.
It was Loki's idea.
I didn't know that. That's interesting!
Well..."Hanged". He was hanging from the Yggdrasil, true, but it wasn't a hanging in the traditional sense. He impaled himself with Gungnir and basically nailed himself to the tree.
"MC Hammer just got struck twice by Greased Lightning"
oh, where do I begin?
MC Hammer - was a rapper in the 80s and 90s. Also Marvel Comics is abbreviated "MC", and Thor is the biggest character that uses a hammer in Marvel. Also, Thor is an emcee in this battle, carrying a giant hammer.
Greased Lightning - was a song from Grease where Danny and Knickie want to soup up a car to pick up girls, something Zeus was notorious for. Also, Zeus is admitting his scandalous behavior saying he's greasy by sleeping with so many women. Also also, grease and wax were used as a hair product in ancient times to prevent breakages and split ends, and even styling, predating modern pomade. It was typically used by the upper class to show status and with Zeus as king of the Gods, he'd be greasy haired. Also also also, greasy means slick or quick to act, Zeus was known for his quickness to action, referring to his previous that referenced Usain Bolt.
And finally, "struck twice"... the saying lightning never strikes the same place twice AND the fact it was Zeus's second verse.
Shelby Herring Also grease lightning is a play on Greece Lightning since he was a Greek God most famously known for his lightning bolts
@@JayLavale Did I really forget that one? My bad, but yeah you're right.
Hot damn, that's a lot in one line
@@zeelsteel9237 the thought that goes behind this battles is amazing
Shelby Herring
Thor might’ve won the battle but Zeus had the absolute best line. It was FIRE!
“Puns aren’t necessarily pun-ches” very true but in this case some of them actually were. A Flyting is a norse poetry battle, the original rap battle, and Ragnarok refers to the day when all the gods die in norse myth and universe is reborn. Thor was basically saying “My people *invented* rap battles, step to me and I’ll rain armageddon on your entire pantheon”
I think you give Thor too much credit on those bars. They could mean that, but the way the rest of the bars are structured, I don't read them that way. They really are just puns. If it weren't for the shapeshifting rapist line, Zeus would have handily won the first round imo.
Thor did win though because he had all of the hardest punches. Even acknowledging that, I still prefer Zeus because I thought his flow was better.
I was looking for this
@@fong03 Each word is a pun on Norse mythology, it's really good bar. Like easily one of the best
Dude do you have any idea how deep ERB goes? It’s always a safe bet something is intentional. Especially when it’s three double meanings in a row that all lined up
or, in this case, panty off
Me, the mythology nerd: Holy shit the BARS and REFERENCES.
I would nerd out and explain all of them but we would be here for years. 😅
Zeus shouldn't have said "Loki must've written your rhymes", because the jötunn happens to be the best at flyting-- he readily took on his entire pantheon in Lokasenna and only stopped after Thor threatened him.
@@Pastamist but Loki is the type to purposely deceive someone with rhymes and intentionally write bad ones just to mess with him.
@@DrT.Weirdo Perhaps, but he didn't do that in Lokasenna (the actual myth where he engages against his pantheon); he often let the other gods go first, then retaliated and verbally buried them by bringing up skeletons in their closet and nasty rumors.
@@Pastamist I understand that. But Loki in legend and myth was the type to be cunning and to do what he liked as long as others perceived him any other way. Which is why he shape shifted alot to kind of symbolise his "I'll do it right under your nose" type of mentality. Before you know it, he'd have written his lines for him.
In saying that, Thor won so maybe Loki really did write his lines 😉
Ameliano Vallerga
I think that line is often misunderstood. I think Zeus was saying that since Loki was a trickster, Thor’s lines where a complete joke because Loki wrote them.
“Who would ever worship someone as abusive as Zeus is” the flow that line was fire.
"I need to talk to these writers." And you just did, Scru! Congratulations again on getting featured in an ERB video!
Scru : Let me talk to you if you wanna be rappers man

$5 says he's gonna scream during the battle.
@@ghyprh Really, $5.00 is what you have?
Moise Picard Hey man, we gotta eat and buy TP out here, I can’t blame my man 😂
Thor won, overall the battle was close but Thor's opening line and second and third verses final lines were brutal
If you base it off the finishing line then the person who goes second wins every time. It was a close battle but Zeus' opener is overlooked. Thor kept on the he a hoe parade too much and zeus owns it. Its a close battle but zeus had more fire bars and won the battle.
@@zythum117 I don't only base it off the finishing line tho. Zeus' opener was great but Thor's opener was better imo.
Raymond Sweet What bro? How could you say Zeus wins? This was easily one of the most one sided battles in favor of Thor? Zeus’ disses were weak af, and his flow wasn’t as good as Zeus. Thor’s 5th best diss was 2x as good as Zeus best diss.
@IonizedSalmon fair warning you accidentally said Thor kissed and married his sister instead of zeus which might confuse some people
@@jadenb4922 weak? I'm unsure if you failed to understand, but Zeus made fun of Thor's crossdressing AND how Odin hung himself, those were huge hits compared to Thor's.

Yo, in the pun section Thor challenged Zeus to Flyte, which is basically the first version of battle rap, so while he was mostly making puns, he was also telling Zeus that he was both the better fighter and rapper.
'now make like your daddy and swallow my babies' is a raw line. I can't remember the full story, but it has something to do with Cronus trying to eat his children who were prophesied to overthrow his rule. Of course he was tricked into eating something that made him in fact throw the children back up so it went through anyway, but still. I feel like there's a lot of references that he didn't cover which hit pretty hard.
Also that noose line. Damn.
IIRC it was Cronus’ wife who fed him a rock instead of Zeus who then stole his Scythe and cut the rest of the Olympians out
"I'll drop you as Greece's GDP"
Won this form me.

Always look forward to seeing your ERB reaction
This is one of my favorite battles of all time from them. The historical and mythological references, the animation and the match up are all perfect, on top of the bars being crafted with eloquence, passion and savagery almost like no other battle.
Edit: The animator, if you don't know already, is ForrestFire101 who has made Lego stop motion videos on UA-cam for over a decade, usually superhero related stuff. I used to watch all his videos as a kid, he's super talented and just makes overall great and entertaining content.
If I may make a suggestion I personally love the Shakespeare Vs. Dr. Seus ERB
Then again any with Watsky involved are solid IMO.
Love the analysis, keep it up Scru!
It was close the “ be like your father and swallow my kids” bar won it for Thor to me lol
A thing I'm not sure anyone has told you, but Flyte was a kind of battle poetry the Vikings had. The warriors respected strength of mind and wit as much as strength of arms.
Basically. Thor was already a battle rap legend before the battle started.
Haven't started the reaction yet but I have been waiting for this one.
Im a huge ERB fan and i've been watching these reactions for a time now.
You're awesome man! Keep it up!
Dude, I absolutely love your energy and delivery. I just found this channel, but I already like what I see!
"I need to meet these guys..." Well, now you officially have been in an ERB lol
Love how in depth u get. They do behind the scenes for all their videos if ur interested in seeing their creative process.
The Noose bar actually might also reference that Odin once hung himself which I think it is cuz the bar before mentions Thors Daddy, Odin.
I will never get tired of this channel, this ish is Dope!
You should check out some disraps for hire
It really shows off EpicLloyds skill
When Thor lands the line for dropping Greece's GDP, game over. Done. This is probably a top 2 from ERB for me. It's a bit fast but it adds to the intensity. The whole flow of that verse from Thor is unreal.
Starting to re-watch all of these again in anticipation for the next ERB reaction to drop
Can you react to ERB Rasputin vs Stalin or Darth Vader vs Adolf Hitler 1,2, and 3?

Happy u doin erb been following them since they dripped been following u 2 years now love ur work slime shady

Bruh I feel like scru just glazed over the “make like your daddy and swallow my babies” that right there won Thor the battle for sure. Cronos swallowed his kids to prevent from being overthrown so that punch is a double entendre and is cold asf🔥
The ERB reactions of yours has become one of the things I look forward to the most on youtube. Keep it up bro.
ALSO! Zeus kinda unintentionally dunked on himself. Those fathers of philosophy he boasted of were opposed to democracy and preferred oligarchy.
That…actually kind of depends? I assume you‘re talking about Plato, but he‘s hardly representative of all Greek philosophers.
Not to mention when he tried to dunk on Loki, when Loki was one of the masters of flyting, the Norse equivalent of battle rap.
@@AlexanderAzarov Indeed lol
I’m surprised he has reviewed the “East vs west” erb battle. It’s basically a 3v3 and has Jin on it as well.
Personally I think Thor won but Zeus was very close though. What I've noticed in some reactions that some haven't realized how amazing this line is, "Make like your daddy, and swallow my babies". This line is referring to when the Father Titan Chronos literally ate all of his children aka Zeus's siblings before Zeus defeated him.
you make me want to binge all of erbs raps again like they fr got Bars in some of these im definitely gonna go and watch like 20 after this
Scru go check out the behind the scenes stuff, even if it isn't in a reaction. You will see the Mastermind they have.
Coming back to this one all these years later and now knowing what flyting is I can appreciate Thor’s verses even more now. He’s basically telling Zeus mofo we’ve been rapping since the BC!
Of all of the ERB vids that you have reacted to, none deserves a behind the scenes reaction more than this. It was so well done!
Have watched a lot of reactions to this video, yours was the most analytical and intellectual by far, earned my subscription
This is the one thing that drives me nuts about your breakdowns. "You're doing a lot of puns, but you're not throwing a lot of punches."
Theres punches in those puns, my man. Look past the surface wordplay and hear what hes saying with it. You do it every ERB when someone gets punny.

Just want to say, both you and ERB have really opened this punk rocking White Boy's eyes up to the artistry of good rap, specially battle rap,

I personally don’t much care to listen to rap, but I will admit, it’s impressive just how complex rap is. When I was a foolish child, I thought rap was just angry shouting to a beat, but now a days I know that rap is an intricate skill that takes years of practice and dedication to master.
Any chump can rhyme and be abrasive, but it takes genuine intellect to competently craft rap music.
