finaly, scrapman uses the full potential of the hover bolocks. Now let's just hope that he uses the ufo glitch engine (instead of the stabilizer feature). It works by putting a block at an angle in front of the hover pad (5 degrees of diffrence). (there're some videos about it)
You missed another key aspect of the UFO glitch - if you tilt a block into a hoverpad it goes fast as hell. It's used in lots of micro-aircraft builds that are designed to break the speed of sound.
@@Redscope621 you can create a UFO engine with many different blocks, some have been patched but for the most part it remains. the basic concept you want is the surface the hover block is pushing against to change angle, this changes the direction of the force. You can use steering hinges, rotating servos and pistons.
@@Oli-cn1vd Wait you necro'd a 4 month old thread just to add 'yeah'?? Thanks for your brilliant insight, your contribution to this long-dead conversation is invaluable. :P
You should just hook the pistons into the throttle button. They'll just pull back as soon as you start moving forward but you can strafe at an instant without having to worry if you're still moving forward or back. Then take off with turning mechanics in another instant.
Nah, not smart. The pistons would retract completely. In order to do something kind of that, you would either require Analog or Binary logic. @@Octotrapper
I built a spacecraft that used this glitch instead of a quantum rudder. Unlike quantum rudder, UFO glitch doesn't affect speed in the axis vertical to the hover-pad axis, so my spacecraft could reach unlimited speeds while being stable like if it had quantum rudder.
0:06 there is a ufo glitch and the ufo engine making the use of the ufo glitch but it only uses 1 rover the ufo engine is by far the most powerfull "engine" in the game
I never used quantum rudders in a space fighter. hover wings have more strenght per power core at 600kph or slower, hover wings handle like rcs in that their force doesn't increase at more speed, quantum rudders are more like wings. I also mostly have the hover wings turned off and only turn on when docking or stealing. another way to use hoverpads is to hinge a wedge into it to get speed.
I love how scrapman is using a glitch that makes things floaty to turn and is not using it when he has the problem that his creation is not floating well
5:58 tightened up your turn. You went from way loose to tight. Yep the side ones are centered in a way that your actually rolling through middle of the turn. An amazing find for racing.
With the hover engine, you can block off the thruster with either straight block for the effect you see, or angled block, which act like a vector, and change the direction of the thrust from straight to a certian direction. Using hinges, you can change the angle, and therefore the direction of that force, giving you a lot of directional thrust. This is basically how the UFO engine works. Some blocks have been patched out to not produce a directional force, but most blocks will work. Having two facing together in opposite directions cancels any aditional straight directional force, meaning you won't rise and fall in the direction a single thruster faces normally. Combining two hover blocks, with their own angled blocks and geometry on hinges to interact, produces the most power to powercore ratio of any thruster.
Glad you did a video on this because I honestly thought the "ufo glitch" only referred to the glitch where you use a hinge to tilt a block into the hoverpad thrust area to provide really high directional propulsion, I had no idea that stacking them together like this allowed for these velocity dampening effects
Welcome to the hover pad fun? You can also turn on of the two off to actually produce a small but powerful force in one direction. I've use this in an old creation of mine "The Box" and it's pretty fun. Cheers!!!
19:50 Another idea would be to have another set of hovers on the front of the center of mass. When staffing, use all four. When turning, use only the back ones.
Don't know if your going to see this but you can do a test to see if more pads in one direction his more of an affect on your speed when active. Love the videos
You can also put hoverpads facing towards anything solid and they act as a slow and super ridiculously stable upwards thrust (or whichever way they are facing
I've been messing around with the super traction hover pad glitch recently (the one that lets you drive on walls) and it has almost the same effect, physics get a little weird when physics defying items are involved
Scrap man shloud use the forward thrust with the hoverpads in the drag strip. hes shloud try to beat my record of 1:73 seconds in the 2-5 powercore lege
what i find interesting is TerraTech actually has a very similar glitch using hoverpads, though i think it provides crazy good stabilisation and speed for some reaspon
They aren't ideal for space travel as as soon as the thrust depends on pitch, I made a spaceship powered by UFO engines but the UFO engine requires gyrostabilisation to keep it upright, and then quantum rudders to redirect the thrust in the desired direction, it does however give you very good manseuvarability, it's capable of doing J turns at 300+ mph abd changing direction near instantly
wow the way they work on that floating turret on the single thruster is amazing, i thought i was kinda cool design to be able to shoot and move in an opposite direction, but the way it flies like some seeker turret, could for SURE be implemented with some ai to make a swarm of those things!!
You can also use wedges and hinges with a glitch similar to this to make it move forward and it moves very fast, I have seen vehicles using only this as a movement method and they go anwhere from 300-3000 mph.
So much more you can do with them by turning one off. Pitch, turning, altitude. Then of course engines. Also thanks for picking my Pikachu in the build challenge.
Could you make a gyroscope with this where you only turn off one side at a time? Or have a gyro scope hover glitch in the center then have this retro fitted design around it?
I have used this glitch before and it’s amazing, but one thing I was surprised to see him not cover is the fact you can create “thrust” with the 2 hover pads. All you need to do is turn one of the 2 hover pads off and it will produce a stable force.
if you put only one hoverpad and press the slanted side of an aerodynamic block into it you can get insane forwards speed. i used it to break the sound barrier with a single power core
you can also put them under a block pad thrusting upwards into it to make a wall climber. i made a spider truck out of this trick to help get me up to some higher collectables before i had flight options if you have the pad on a steering hinge with no reset it makes it into a really controllable rock/wall crawler
Another thing you could do to mitigate the altitude drop is to just put the smallest thrusters/jets (the 1x2x1 ones) along the bottom attached to the larger thruster.
Ufo glitch (as called in the thumbnail) is shoving/rotating some block into the hoverpad to get a crazy speed, unfortunately that has been patched a few updates before space expansion (would've been awesome to have in space) Making two hoverpads face each other used to give a very strong "directional effect" thats similar to the quantum rudder, but with the introduction of the space expansion this effect has been drastically weakened (it still works but less & only at pretty low speeds, seems to be something like 70% the effect of the quantum rudder and instead of limiting speed like quantum rudder it just completely stops working after you speed up beyond 250-300)
Can these be used as lift? Like if the thrust stays completely horizontal and you angle the hoverpads so they tilt up a little bit, will that make you go up?
I’ve seen someone use levers to propel their build and it broke the sound barrier. We need a video exploring this glitch. I’ve found one once on the workshop and it was a crazy 4 panel helicopter/rutter thing. It was nuts idk how it worked before my ps5 got a corrupted file and deleted all my stuff
Suggestion: scrapman, hi I know something else that you can do with these hover pads that you should absolutely try out. So if you get a hinge with a wedge attached to it and then forcefully bend the wedge against the hoverpad, you get crazy speed and acceleration from it.
This would be a great vehicle for battling against each other in Trailmakers. I bet it would be so much fun for everyone especially with its high controllability.
Multiplayer Monday idea: you guys should do a Hover Buggy Race in Scrap Mechanic. 5 thrusters. One for each "wheel", and one for movement and steering. Thruster for movement and steering should be set at 5.
In lament terms, the “UFO glitch” or “Hoverpad glitch” is a very strong wing that works in any environment. It can be used to replace conventional wings, be used to direct thrust which is called a “UFO Engine” or “Hover Engine” and reach ridiculous speeds and pull stronger forces. Downside to its uses is it can be unpredictable at times. So when something isn’t doing what you wanted it to do, its probably its side effect or as the community calls it “Trailmakered”
I will be interested to see this used in space in place of the quantum rudder as this would allow you to have no speed limit while getting the same control. It could be a heck of an advantage in a space fight.
BTW it’s said by other people but it can be any surface the thrust side is facing for the glitch to work and if you push the flat side of a 2x1 angled block into the thrust side with and it will make this incredibly strong and fast “quantum force” that you could probably break the sound barrier with, 2 power cores only btw
Scrap, I need your help, I'm trying to replicate your hover mechanism thing in one of your previous videos and I can't, so if you could make a tutorial for it that it would be greatly appreciated 😊
Build an air snake with this .... every snake segment basically has to follow if it can only move free linearly The head would need to have multiple of these hover glitches to kinda move on invisible rails through the air

I kind of use this glitch before, but I didn’t use 2 hover pads I used hover pads with two blocks underneath them like making a helicopter but you crash into the ground and it’s way harder to control
I can't believe you've never used this glitch. That's kind of impressive, to be honest.
He has but he's never really experimented with it...
I’ve never used this glitch since I’ve played and I’ve played since high seas came
Weren’t his old wall-climbers using the hoverpads technically an implementation of the UFO glitch?
its a really old glitch, i played before all the newer updates, like in 2019
I agree😂

this is what i thought wheen i saw the video, to me, hover negines are more exxiting and i dint even know about this use.

The big advantage of this over the quantum rudder, I guess, is that this is actually a toggleable stabilizer.
That and there is only artifical drag produced in one axis, depending on the rotation.

You can get additional controls out of them if you have the option to only swotch on one of them at a time.
