    Nice video. I just ordered my first ever Jeep, that looks almost identical to the one in this video. I ordered a brand new 2021 JL Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon that was ordered on 11-30-2020 and then came in to the dealership on 02-12-2021. I was very pleasantly surprised at how fast my Rubicon got built and delivered to the dealership. I’ve off roaded my entire life but have always done so I trucks. However, I have wanted a Jeep for years and almost pulled the trigger on buying one on a handful of occasions but never did for some reason or another but I am now really excited that I finally did.

    My JK vs JL comparison (for me, a 2 door Rubicon soft top)
    My JL pros
    -possibly the new 2.0 engine (I also like the Pentastar)
    -8 speed transmission
    -quicker throttle response
    -soft top without ‘cross bar’
    -soft top no zippers
    -quieter soft top
    -body color roll bar
    -flat horizontal dash
    -lighter/aerodynamic tweaks = better MPG
    -real metal interior detail
    -real hardware (not faux bolts) interior
    -more inputs and other interior conveniences
    -larger cup holders
    -air vents for cooling under hood
    -more rake in windshield (think rock damage)
    -doors stay opened, and close better
    -cabin is slightly longer
    -doors remove easier/faster
    -telescopic adjusting steering wheel
    -bigger storage tub
    -stronger and lighter tailgate
    -better hood latches
    -easier drain plug access (without needing to move carpet)
    My JL cons
    -auto start/stop (I know it can be disabled)
    -the bumpers (front and back)
    -front running lights on fender flare
    -too much digital visual “noise” on dash
    -rear camera (I know I can take it off - and I will)
    -no hard drive in radio to store music
    -looser steering
    -the $ cost $

    I just ordered my 2019 Rubicon (Ocean Blue) and I am new to the Jeep Family! I cannot wait to get it! Your video is quite informative and innovative (specially from the point of view of a JK owner). I like what you have done with the Plati-dip! What a great idea! I was not aware that you could order the wider rock rails! I will make sure that I do add this option. Very nice video overall! 👍

      I have a RAM Rebel 1500 crew cab as well. Sometimes you just need a truck for space and hauling or towing things, other times the Jeep is preferable, like on trails, or when less 'stuff' is needed.

    Regarding the underfloor storage in the rear, why not a drawer system so it will be available with coolers and such in the rear? Just pull a drawer out with your tools and such.

    • @DamonBungard
      @DamonBungard  6 років тому

      You could put a drawer system back there -- pros and cons to that. I want to be able to stack two kennels, or a kennel on top of a cooler, and I can't do that if some of the vertical space needed is occupied by a drawer system. Drawer systems also tend to be relatively difficult to remove. My payload is constantly changing, so I'd rather deal with having to remove what's back there to get to tools when necessary and keep maximum storage space. (I take most of the tools out of there before I go on off road trips anyways to lower the likelihood of having to do that).

    • @madman432000
      @madman432000 6 років тому

      I was actually thinking from the factory not add in aftermarket. Same floor space and height available but the storage area below the floor in a drawer. Open the tailgate and there is a drawer you pull out. Just a thought.

    • @RickZackExploreOffroad
      @RickZackExploreOffroad 6 років тому

      Phil - I installed a ARB drawer system, its about 10" tall with a slider floor "top" so access to cargo is easy. Pretty happy with it and it really increased by useable cargo area.

    Nice JL walk around! Quick question, Can you mount your kayak on top of the Mopar crossbars? Any issues?

    • @DamonBungard
      @DamonBungard  6 років тому

      Jeep and Mopar clearly state the rack is not recommend for carrying paddlesports products. But it is rated to 150 lbs. My suspicion is that kayaks vary so much in length, width and weight and tie down methods that it's extremely difficult to 'approve' the rack for carrying them since loads and aerodynamics can vary so widely. I think you could likely do it in most situations, but do so at your own risk. I doubt they'd warranty any damage.

      Damon Bungard Thx! I have a large 80gal pyranha Whitewater kayak that I’m wanting to mount on my new JLU rubicon. Guess I just need to be patient and wait for more aftermarket products. Can you post a video of your kayak transport set up the next time you’re headed out? Thx man.

    After a days driving on unimproved roads and gravel on the Blue Ridge, I came home to find a bog rock chip on my rear passenger door hinge.
    Did you plasti-dip your h(byes yourself or did you have someone else do it? I saw yours turned out pretty professional, so if you did it, what procedure did you use?

      I did them myself. Post #3 is this thread: www.jlwranglerforums.com/forum/threads/damons-white-jlu-rubicon-build.4819/. It's pretty easy, just mask them off, spray multiple coats (4+), demask the last one while it's still a little wet for a good parting line.

    Great review! I'm especially interested in being able to use a roof rack. The only thing keeping me from owning the JLU Rubicon would be the price. My research leads me to believe the price for the 2018 JLU Rubicon has cracked the $50,000 barrier. I like the optional equipment you have. So I'm guessing that your Jeep with options approaches the mid $50's. Am I in the ballpark?

    What’s your opinion on the leather seats vs cloth? My wife and I have a 2014 Wrangler and had a ton of rain come in, so much we had to use the drain. I was thinking if I bought the cloth seats and silicone them, I wouldn’t see potential issues with the leather seats shrinking etc.

    • @DamonBungard
      @DamonBungard  6 років тому

      On my JKU we covered the cloth seats with neoprene vests from Rugged Ridge. On the new JLU the leather is nice and we'll probably keep it as is, using a temporary rear seat cover the EZYDOG Drive as needed. Then on the front seats something like the Carhartt pullover seat covers that will go on for specific adventures, then come back off when back home as daily driver.

    Will the plasti-dip hold up to rocks and prevent chips? I thought it chipped easy and then peeled off afterwards?

    • @DamonBungard
      @DamonBungard  6 років тому +1

      I think that's a function of a lot of things - mostly how thick you put it on. I haven't seen and chipping and peeling yet. If you apply with thick coats it's not brittle -- more rubbery, like the durometer of multiple layers of electrical tape. Putting on the wider Performance Rock Rails has also immensely helped block rocks from hitting the hinges at all in the first place.

      Damon Bungard What do you think of the 285/75r17 KO2 tire size, do you know of any upwards(necessary bump stop adjustment) or steering lock to lock clearance issues for a stock JLUR.

    • @DamonBungard
      @DamonBungard  6 років тому

      The tires are a great size for my all-around purposes. There are no needs for a lift at all, and you can even go to 35" tires now on Rubicons from the factory, with no lift or any suspension changed needed with no rubbing on Rubicons.

      We have a BOB stroller we collapse and put on the roof, or a folding stroller fits with the small section of the rear seat folded down.

    I was planning on buying a new 2018 jeep rubicon. I see that you seem to have a lot of experience with jeeps. I was kind of torn between choosing white or black paint job, as black seems to look cooler but I am afraid of scratches showing more in black, after off roading. What do you suggest? Thanks

    • @DamonBungard
      @DamonBungard  6 років тому +1

      My prior Jeep was dark maroon (Red Rock Crystal), and dark colors definitely show scratches and dirt more than light colors. White is easy to keep clean, and won't tend to show scratches in the clear coat.

      No, none at all so far. And that includes some good 'exercising' at Windrock Park here in TN for the Jeep Jamboree.

    How's the wind noise in your?? I test drove one that was way worse than my JK which is unacceptable for me with a $50K Jeep. I will test drive a few more and see if its in multiple ones.

    • @DamonBungard
      @DamonBungard  6 років тому +2

      My JLU is definitely quieter than my JKU. There's still some wind noise, and the aerodynamics still are what they are. Even though the slanted the windshield a bit more, it's still largely a box being pushed through the air. I do have the hard top liner in my JLU which may play a small factor.

    Does the JLU seem a lot more Peppy then your old JK and are you going to 35's

    • @DamonBungard
      @DamonBungard  6 років тому +1

      yes, it's got plenty of 'pep'. My old '08 JKU definitely had to work at times. No I do not plan on going to 35's -- the stock 33's are very good for my purposes as an overland vehicle and daily driver.

    unfortunately those hood vents are not functional. The side vents are, but not the hoods. I heard that a while ago, but just recently a video was posted of a man who removed the vent to find out. 100% not functional. ua-cam.com/video/ddgZfOVVGI8/v-deo.html

    These JL Jeeps are going to suck balls when you try to rock crawl and you stop for a second and it shuts down and then you start rolling backwards then you open the door and your jeep completely shut down game over

    So they dropped the towing capacity from 5,000# to 3,500#? That's a hose detriment.

    • @DamonBungard
      @DamonBungard  6 років тому +1

      I don't believe any Wrangler has had a 5000# towing capacity. 3500 is same as the JK capacity. You can see towing capacities here: www.jeep.com/jeep-capabilities/towing.html
