Ian Chang’s musical journey began in Hong Kong when he started taking piano lessons at the age of six. He picked up the drums a few years later, drawn to an instrument that allowed him to practice anywhere on anything.
Quickly, he became the kid who was always tapping on desks, tables, windows - anything he could find.
Having studied classical percussion as well as rock and pop in his youth, Ian studied jazz drumming in college. He worked with Tony Moreno, who taught him to think about rhythm conceptually, and focus on polyrhythms, displacing the beat, and bringing emotion to a groove. Later, while living in NYC, Ian began drumming for artists all over the city and eventually being brought in as a part- and full-time drummer in a variety of projects.
In this video, Ian introduces us to the full story of how he climbed the ladder from an indie NYC drummer for hire to being nominated for Academy Awards and touring the world as a pro.
