Arizona and New Mexico
Two bordering states in these United States. Both are in the heart of the American Southwest.
Both are about the same size...New Mexico is just slightly bigger. However, Arizona has more than three times as many people, and it’s growing at a higher rate. In fact, Arizona is one of the fastest growing states in the country, while New Mexico is definitely not.
A big reason why is Phoenix, which is the fifth biggest city in the country. Phoenix attracts all the concerts, all the professional sports teams, all the best comedians, and all the best indie films in theaters that people think they’re cool for seeing.
Arizona also has Tucson, which has a larger metropolitan population than New Mexico’s biggest city, Alburquerque. Still, it has an amazing balloon festival called the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta. Plus Albuquerque is a way cooler name for a city. I just love saying it.
Both states are known for their deserts, for both are two of the driest states in the country. However, both have these little areas that get higher rainfall due to having a higher elevation.
Due to these elevation differences, both do have some climate variation. I mean, Arizona has the high plateau in the northeast part of the state, the mountainous region that runs from the northwest to southeast, and the low ranges and desert valleys down in the southwestern part. Its biggest desert is the Sonoran. The Chihuahuan Desert is the big one in New Mexico, and it even creeps into Arizona. New Mexico also has the Rocky Mountains in the north, the Great Plains in the east, and basically high plateau throughout the rest of the state. Where the elevation is high, they also tend to get four seasons. Otherwise, folks have been moving to both states for decades due to their mild winters and generally beautiful weather. Or at least snowbirds just head down there for the winter.
Which is better? New Mexico or Arizona? Which two states should I compare next?
Tennessee and Kentucky or Alaska and Hawaii.
New York and New Jersey would be interesting. Especially talking about Liberty Island.
Idaho and Wyoming
In your video you have New Mexico as the 30th fastest growing state, I thought New Mexico had a declining population.
Alaska VS Hawaii
Literally no one says Chicano English, they all call it spanglish. I know.... I live here
That's true, but who knows how prevalent that info is available outside of NM. I mean, who really talks about us, so we're probably one of the more unknowns.

I loooooooove these comparisons. I'm from poland and american culture is fascinating.
Good to know I have European fans of this series! When I get to comparing Poland, what should I compare it to?
@@iammrbeat That's a hard question, there's really no country like Poland because we're the borderland between western and eastern Europe, Germany is completely different from us other than the geography which is somewhat similar. We're really the closest to nations like Lithuania, Czechia and Hungary but these nations are way smaller and less populous so comparing them is like comparing maybe Spain and Portugal or Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Romania is a bit closer in size and population and history and economics but the climate is way different and I don't know much about it myself. You could compare Czechia with Slovakia or Lithuania with Latvia or Austria with Hungary but Poland is mostly it's own beast. Technically you could compare with Ukraine but they never had the same level of patriotism and they don't have the western influences which makes them much poorer and more rural.
@@iammrbeat BUT Warsaw is very comparable to either Berlin or Prague

-Chile, Argentina or Uruguay (seems crazy, but it actually somehow works, try it sometimes)

-Slovakia (smaller, but very similar)
-Hungary (different ethnic background, a lot of cultural and historic similarities, friends)
-Lithuania (same as above, except with rivalry instead of friendship)

Resident of Arizona here, It should be noted that Arizona actually was the original, main home of the film industry before Hollywood was even a thing. Almost every western film was made in Arizona, specifically in "Old Tuscon"
I have family from New Mexico and I visit there every year for the Zozobra event, the festival is much like burning man but the purpose is more about burning away gloom. Hence why the giant puppet is stuffed with divorce papers, criminal records, and other documents that have a negative purpose to them.
I'd also like to tell you about the New Mexico "Meow Wolf" founded by George R.R. Martin (Yes THAT George R.R. Martin) it was an old bowling alley turned into a giant psychedelic story-telling museum that is a must visit! You enter a small 2 story house within the building and to sum it the best I can, you open a fridge and get transported into a rift between realities.
Elder Maxson I’ve been to Old Tucson, it’s fun there, it’s pretty fascinating!
The fridge, the fireplace, the closet, under the stairs......
Sedona was considered an up and coming “Little Hollywood” for western movies but after the decline in demand for those films Sedona became an artsy, outdoor enthusiast, and spiritual location.
Elder Maxson lived out there just next door to OldTucson, over 25yrs total. And come to find that before there was such Az western films, 🌞NJ hosted as many, back to the beginnings of that genre of movies🌵
And now they’re making meow wolf a chain which is really annoying to me. Because now it’s not unique.

So, I live in the Sonoran desert, and this message is for all who are visiting southern Arizona for the first time: Take the amount of water you would normally drink and double it, do not go outside in the summer past 10:00 am, If you get a cactus needle in you, stay calm and pull it out, it is very similar to a splinter but bigger, lastly, if you’re going hiking at any other time than the winter, get a camel pack for your water.

Thanks for doing these awesome videos! As a Canadian we feel we know a lot about your country but getting down to a state-by-state and city-by-city level really helps unearth all the nooks and crannies you only get from living in a country! If I can provide some other states to compare amongst each other, I would pick:
- Kansas (your home state!) and Nebraska compared (both big farming states with surprising similarities and differences)
- Colorado and Wyoming compared (neighbouring, extremely square states but that's where the similarities end)
- Montana and Idaho compared (Rocky Mountain states with really interesting details and stories, similarities and differences)
- Kentucky and Tennessee compared (I always think of them as those long, thin states in the south that people forget about)
- ENTIRE VIDEOS set aside for Texas and Alaska respectively, they're both too big and interesting and different from everyone else to not examine individually, (arguably the same could be said for Hawaii even though it's not as big)
- New York State and California compared (both hold massive metropoles and play an outsized influence on US culture and mindset)
- Ohio and Indiana compared, arguably the MOST midwestern states (or Michigan and Ohio given their historic rivalries)
Some international ones could also be done! In my home and native land of Canada, comparing the Northwest Territories and Nunavut territory would be interesting, as well as comparing BC and Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan, Ontario and Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, and for a little change, compare the two parts of a single PROVINCE - Newfoundland and Labrador, they're so different from one another they barely resemble one another and yet make one administrative province! Keep up the great work Mr. Beat! :D
Wow, what a great list of suggestions. I actually had planned on making most of those anyway. And thank you for the kind words. Which province are you from?
@@iammrbeat Thanks a lot Mr. Beat!! I'm from Ontario, the most populated province in Canada! We have the biggest city in the Country (Toronto) and the national capital (my hometown, Ottawa!) It's one of the most diverse, largest and most interesting provinces in the country! One other thing to know is when comparing the different First Nations (our word for Native American) peoples in Canada, take some time to focus on it - they're a much bigger part of both our population as a whole and civil society/history here in Canada than in the USA, with dark marks like the genocide of First Nations children in residential schools looming large in our memory. But on a happier note, they also have diverse societies with amazing traditions working on preserving and revitalizing their unique cultures! I hope you take the time to look at this!
Nice list. But here in the USA, NYC isn't acknowledged nearly as much as California, Florida and Atlanta of Georgia. NYC simply has a massive jewish media presence which alludes to your statement of influencing mindsets.

Thank you for doing a video comparing the two states. As a New Mexican I had always considered Arizona to be our closest related state considering our cultural ties and several centuries of shared history. While we also have close relationships to Texas, Colorado, and to a lesser extent Utah (part of New Mexico is in the 'Morman belt') I never understood why more UA-camrs spent more time comparing those relations other than our arguably more significant relations with Arizona. I grew up in a small New Mexican town less than 25 miles from the Arizona border and spent a lot of time in both states. My middle and high school sports teams even often played Southwestern Arizona teams and participated in Arizona tournaments. A significant part of our New Mexico history textbooks discussed events that took place in current day Arizona as for a long time Nuevo México controlled Arizona and events that took place there had a significant impact on our state as well. Ultimately our too states grew up to be very different, but we're eternally entwined and cannot deny being very much related to each other.

Juan Rodriguez That’s nice 😂
jonathan ford either tbh
Arizona has a lot more going on. Night life etc are much better in Arizona.
Mmmmm meth
It's true cause if your out at night in ABQ (I live here) you'll get shot or robbed
And it’s not the best nightlife so damn it must be boring in NM cause Arizona is so behind musically and corny lol
Ah yes, Arizona night life. Beautiful! Thank goodness I live in Arizona.
@@kayvalencourt I guess you have not traveled much as Phoenix has crappy nightlife compared to pretty much every other city. Check out San Diego, Portland, Seattle, Nashville, New Orleans, Chicago, NY, Austin, hell, even Durango CO has better night life.
Burqueño right here. Albuquerque is really starting to kick up in the night life and since you like talking numbers, “Burque” (Burr-key) as it’s often affectionately known as, has a MASSIVE concentration of micro-breweries and craft breweries.
okay… ur state still sucks
Phoenix area is like a cross (or compromise maybe) between SoCal and NM in a way.
I’m so surprised to see you discuss and show my home town of Yuma!
Jason Irr ughh Yuma.
Yeah, so few people have a sense of Yuma these days....
Yuma doesn't get no respect. We have all heard of the contest: First prize is a week in Yuma; second prize is two weeks in Yuma.
Go Criminals!👍
leo alex I’m a criminal alumni too, YHS!
Great video like always. You are a great inspiration for my channel! 😁
Thank you. That means a lot! :D
@@iammrbeat 😊😊
OMG i once suggested this video. Thank you so much. Greetings from Austria. Great video.
We moved to Tucson, Arizona, from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 2007, and we love it here. It's warm, dry, no hurricanes, snowed once in 13 years, no humidity, no bugs, no grass to cut, nearby mountains to visit, etc.
How you liking the snowstorms lately? Got two feet of snow in February about 45 minutes south of Tucson.
And it snowed a bit like 3 days ago here too
Love the comparison videos Mr Beat. Here are some city suggestions:-
1) Tokyo vs Seoul
2) Vancouver vs Seattle
3) Stockholm vs Amsterdam
4) Moscow vs St Petersburg
5) Hong Kong vs Shanghai
6) Rome vs Milan
7) Madrid vs Barcelona
8) Oslo vs Helsinki
9) Berlin vs Munich
10) Calgary vs Edmonton
What an epic list. Thank you.
@@iammrbeat For the sake of actual rivalry, which the residents of those cities would appreciate:
number 3 should be Stockholm vs Helsinki, while
number 8 should be Oslo vs Copenhagen.
And for Amsterdam, their rival is Rotterdam.
... Trust me, Stockholm is Helsinki's biggest envy, ask any Finn.
New York city vs Chicago or Los Angeles vs San Francisco.
Beijing vs Shanghai is a better comparison than Hong Kong
Great video! I'm a member of the Tohono O'odham Nation and I see you use the San Xavier Del Bac Mission in a few of your video clips of Arizona. Tucson was and is the heart of southern Arizona and is a part of the T.O. Nation, San Xavier District is a part of the T.O. Nation which I'm from. Awesome job sir.
I’ve lived in Arizona since 94 and have travelled extensively through both states. I’m beyond impressed with your analysis and breakdown of both places. These are some of the most beautiful spots on the planet. It’s a geological wonderland out here so the elevation changes bring so much ecological diversity. Now we need to protect that diversity before the growing number of humans here exhaust finite resources. We are going to be facing water shortages in the next 20 years. Water is the biggest topic of the next 100 years in my opinion, and if we aren’t more careful we are gonna have a lot of ghost towns scattered throughout the southwest. Amazing video my broski with the moski.
Great video as always John Mr. Beat! Only one snag; No mention of Chaco Canyon in NM, the Anasazi settlement and observatory dating back to the 13th century AD.
New Mexican English in northern New Mexico 😂 how true that is!
9:28-9:34 hits differently since Biden won the state last November
Lol "won" the state
@@John_on_the_mountain yeahh by .31 i believe
The Arizona audit is revealing all the voter fraud.
@@austinrutledge2935 lol 😂😢🤬
As an Arizonian I appreciate this video. We are a pretty cool state once you get past the heat.
Hey all! Im a local Las Crucen for about the last nine years and I can comment on a few things. One thing that has helped the state a lot is the film and commercial space tourism industry's. Here in the very most southern part of New Mexico a lot of people come out to see the White Sands national monument and Orgon Mountain range as both are great out door adventure areas! We are about 30 minutes from El Paso Texas and three hours away from the Arizona border. Oh and you mentined Zozorba. Well New Mexico is very art centeric and Zozorba is our version of "Burning Man" On August 30th this past year they broke the attendance record with over 60,000 people at Zozo at fort Marcy park. oh and if you EVER come to New Mexico...Go to Meow Wolf in Santa Fe. Trust me.
Meow wolf in Santa Fe is indeed awesome. Better than the vegas Meow wolf one for sure. Visited NM a few years back, did a road trip all over the state. National Parks and monuments, cities, etc. And wow land of enchantment is true. I was enchanted, loved the state.
I know you probably didn’t do this video because I suggested it, but the fact that you included my hometown (Clovis) makes me feel even more special.
I'm originally from NM but also lived in Phoenix.
I would say nothing beats home BUT AZ is "better" in the sense that there's more to do and also more opportunities in AZ. NM is a place you go to retire whereas places like Scottsdale/Tempe has decent nightlife for the younger crowd. More recreational activity in the metro PHX area too such as Camelback and Piestwa Peak. NM nightlife is almost non existent especially since the past several years, many places have closed. I love home but I left for a reason.
I lived in Arizona for 16 years of my life and then moved to New Mexico
Everything checks out👌🏻
I love New Mexico! Lived on the Mesa outside of Taos and it remains the most beautiful place I ever lived- but the winters, though beautiful we’re too long for me. I live in Texas now, but go back every summer to vacation.
I was born in Roswell and all I can say is Well done! Really well researched. I really enjoyed it
Thank you!
Great video, very informative. Thank you!
NM Rocks.!
Theirs a lot you left out about NM.
thanks for the great video.....have lived in Santa fe for many years and now in Corrales, a historic agricultural community. As a former Californian, we appreciate New Mexico more than ever.
Mr. Beat looks swole tho, 13:31 look at those arms man dayum
I thought I was the only one who saw that.
Possibly gives "Mr. Beat" a whole new meaning.
Right???
He Don't have a gf he has to do all the handy work
I scrolled frantically looking for this comment! Lmao dudes arms are huge
Great videos we'll keep watching I live in Arizona and really like your videos thanks mr. B
Very interesting video man. I’m from New Mex and have lived in Arizona. Both states are great in my book. But you forgot to mention a New Mexico staple... Green and Red Chile!
if they’re a staple then i would hear about it more
"New Mexico has more PhDs per capita than any other state."
Are they teaching high school like Walter White? (Nothing wrong with that)
Yusuf Nasihi haha good one 😂 but it’s actually because we have a few national labs here and a very low population
Here in New Mexico we have Sandia National Labs in Albuquerque, Los Alamos National Labs in Los Alamos and White Sands Missile Range. A lot of energy research takes place at Sandia Labs. Nuclear research takes place at Los Alamos (Where the world's first nuclear bomb was produced). The first atomic bomb was tested at the Trinity site near White Sands. A lot of missile and space research and testing occur at White Sands. There is also the International Space Port near Truth or Consequences for the launch of space tourism.
abq new mexico born and raised, land of entrapment. ive lived in 14 different states, im a traveler :) but i always manage to stay a resident of new mexico ;) anyways, Taos has a wierd alien humm that happens, and dulce is the hot spot for alien activity. chimayo has dirt with healing powers, that was blessed by Jesus or something. Loretto chapel has a stair case built by jesus, too, or something. Zozobra, is also known as old man gloom. it's a peganistic new mexico tradition to burn your worries away, or something. theres alot of great outdoors stuff too, like the la luz trail run, all kinds of skiing and snow boarding, hiking, the jemez hot springs. i can go on forever, yo.. enchilada festivals, taco festivals, green chile cheese burgers :) chile capital of the world! alot of UFC Champions come out of, or train in New Mexico, i went to school with one that fought GSP, he lost but we love him anyways :) alot of people train in New Mexico just because of the altitude. currently live in Tucson.
NM has 2 national parks as carlsbad and white sands were upgraded from national monuments. I have been to both, and they are absolutely breathtaking.
As a proud New Mexican, it is so great that our state is getting noticed and not just called part of Mexico. Although I will admit Arizona is better ;)
Ok boomer
@@xotruu2512 Boomer? 😂 Lol ok, I'm just curious, what makes you say that?
To be fair,i honestly don't know. Practically just boredom and wanting to trigger people 🤷.
Arizona all the way, for a Hispanic American born and raised in Phoenix, I am very proud of my home state and what it stands for as well as its limitless potential.
Well that's what the census says and people really don't mind it at all
My choice was New Mexico.I moved here 11 years ago planning to retire here for the weather. But I love the culture and the wide open spaces Santa fe is a must see.
Paul Serda i live in Arizona and work at a Santa Fe themed restaurant lol. People love it, just had our hatch green Chile harvest specials
@Article 15 that's kinda strange not to like one thing about it? If you like hiking skiing or fishing there is a lot to like. I'm not sure about the liberal statement? I'm not a liberal in the least nor would I let liberals bother me!
@Reaper 6 w ??? NM is like 50/50 as far as politics go my dude. Maybe you just scapegoat the liberals regardless of where you are.
@ARIZONA Infidel If the politics get in the way of everything else,
Im pretty worried ngl
Oh, you want believe but I have been waiting for this comparison for a long time
Error at 9:56 ,the graphic says that Arizona a has a GDP per capital of $38,590, however that is in 2009 dollars. In 2019 dollars the actual amount is $48,055, which puts it ahead of New Mexico. (The New Mexico GDP per capital was in 2019 dollars.)
Mr. Beat is the new MrBeast I’m calling it
Your videos are great. How about Maryland vs Virginia?
I love this videos! Greetings from Spain!
Born and raised in Roswell. I plan to retire in NM as it's a great place for that.
