Bravo for finding this treasure!Dad was a consumate artist. HE LOVED Spohr and played the work like a truly great Opera singer. So human so virtuosic and in such a non aggressive heartfelt manor. Dad always thought Spohr was so underrated as a composer, just as my father was not truly recognized as one of the very greatest violinists. Even many violinists in the know repeat always the name of Heifetz, who played this concerto beautifully ....but not in this intimate gorgeous and personal manner as this one- of-a kind performance. And all the music he touched had his magical stamp indelibly etched. Leopold Auer said he would be remembered for his unique interpretations and as many other greats as well stated for his many other merrits- he remains for so many of us- a violin and musical Giant. Not religious, yet his music is as powerful as any religion. I think when talent, integrity, honesty, and sublime taste meet we have an artist the likes of Oscar Shumsky. Eric Shumsky

Eric you always find the most poetic ways to write about your father, as he does about the music. Ron

Master of the bow, as well as everything else. Thanks to Hector for posting this beautiful performance by Mr. Shumsky. My only problem is the short introduction at about 4:47 and 9:54 of "Some Enchanted Evening". I was so fortunate to spend 3 years studying with the genius. Ronald Hurwitz

Thank for for posting this wonderful performance of "Gesangscene" one of the most beautiful romantic concertos.

I played with Shumsky twice, toward the end of his career. Some really magical moments in those two programs!
The Spohr used to be more popular. Albert Spalding made a nice recording of it, and it was one of those pieces that people had on their list next to Wieniawski, Vieuxtemps, and (you could argue) Bruch.

His playing of the Spohr is just as glorious as his Viotti concerto with piano

A magnificent recording ! Shumsky should have had a much bigger career than he did - he was truly a great violinist ! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
