I was born in HK whilst under UK rule and I remember no one had the opportunity to vote, the governor of HK was appointed by the Queen, in fact all senior government positions were white people from UK, senior police were from UK or India. In the 1960s the local Chinese protested against the British government and many people were killed by the HK police. The HK government under UK rule also banned media about communist China. As for the new extradition laws, as far as I know all countries including HK during British rule had an extradition law in place allowing criminals to be extradited to other countries including Britain.
I can’t even get through this video without cringing. Brits telling the Chinese what human rights are!!! Do they even teach their own colonial history in the UK?
I benefited greatly from HKers leaving HK. My career prospects opened up quite a lot. As an Australian, I don’t think leaving for political reasons is a good reason to leave HK. I’m able to speak freely and I’m no less free here than if I lived in Australia. There are so many misinformed statements here. I really don’t know where to start.
It is good for HongKong’s prosperity in long run for those people to leave, Hong Kong will be better off. I hope they don’t regret their decision. HongKong never had free election or right under UK rule, but they want that when China is taking over. I find it very ironic.
Just go listen to the Canadian, Cyrus Jansen, he went and lived in China, and he has a very objective and sober view of life in China. My problem with these people is, that when pur on the spot, the waffle and spin. I hate when people trash-talks their own countries when they are trying to win the favor of their new host country.
People like these are better off leaving HK. These idiots will fit right in UK, as a sub servants and a laborer. Can you imagine a PHD degree or an doctor in HK comes over to UK and works in a warehouse for $13 an hour. Nice decision. Maybe some day when you kid get bullied on the school bus because they are yellow, you can go tell you kids that is the price to pay for "freedom".
Are they welcome in UK? Do they have better freedom and free speech in UK? Life is really better!? Are they welcome there! Did the UK government really helo them to really settle in UK? Does the local treat them as equal n welcome them with open arm?
People from Hong Kong easily integrated into UK as they had 100 years plus assimilation under British systems and British values - at least four generations. Likewise, they integrated into Canada especially Vancouver during the 2000s. And unlikely to ever return to Hong Kong.
for a seat in the UK house of commons? Im not aware any UK territories today have a representative they elect into the commons. i think HK did have some sort of elections though
Freedom of speech is the US not UK. UK law is freedom of expression up until it's abusive or offensive towards protected characteristics like race, religion, sex......
@@JeanLooksPicard People in the USA and UK get free speech but they don't get a say in the political system unless they have millions of dollars. In China, people have mostly free speech, they just can't criticize the CCP or its history in an "insulting manner". But in exchange, the people of China have far more local democracy, voting, petitioning, and political involvement at local levels, far more than in the USA or UK. Such hypocrisy! At least Jimmy Lai is getting a trial, talk to Julian Assange about democracy and freedom of speech in the UK. Oh and the terrible extradition law? Doesn't UK and all developed western countries have extradition treaties with other developed countries? Again talk to Julian Assange about extradition laws.
The struggle for immigrants is not confined to post-industrial areas of the UK but is international for new arrivals seeking to establish themselves. The UK is far from perfect but if it is an opportunity for these families then I think most countries would welcome hardworking legal immigrants like these. Personally, I wish them all luck in their journey - I have employment-immigrated to three countries and the early days of struggle must be seen as an investment.

UK must have plenty of jobs for these HK migrants. If HK wants democracy, get UK to send their army there. Otherwise, dream on. UK has no guts or money to fight China or force China to cede HK again.

These idiots know nothing about the British rule of law and their history of slavery, or forced Opium down the throat of the Chinese 150 years ago.

To have a taste of racism there
Pre 1997, anyone who insult the British Royal Family would be thrown into prison in Hong Kong.

Yup 100yrs of being second class citizens tend to stick and be obedient to one’s colonial masters.
Yes, the masters have trained them well.
When UK was governing HK how come there were no general elections?
Because we don’t speak about pre 97 when English ruled, brush that under the rug
