  • Please read before commenting. I was going super slow (video always looks faster than actual speed), I was not looking AT the phone just holding it up, stopped recording at approaching traffic, and the road was very wide. Now that you feel safer, grab a coffee and enjoy the drive!! The Moki Dugway, a spectacular switchback road in south eastern Utah that takes you up almost 2,000 feet to the top of the magnificent bluffs of Cedar Mesa. Insane views at every bend, surface is packed unpaved, and the road was wide and felt much safer than it might look. Enjoy!

We drove down the Moki Dugway after a week long rafting trip down the San Juan in late 2012. We got out of the river just above lake Powell at the last possible place to exit. It was the late afternoon and the sun was low. The shadows made the landscape incredible. I had never been down it and never even knew about it until we drove up to it. My brother knew about it and didn't say anything because he wanted it to be a surprise. Even he had not anticipated the atmospheric conditions from the sun being so low. My friend was driving my Toyota Tacoma pickup with a bunch of rafting hardware in the back and I was able to enjoy the ride all the way down. I will never forget it. This same friend and I had another driving experience years before in San Diego driving at night in the fog, so this was another great memory for us.
Oh, it is NOT dangerous at all. Just drive sanely.
Thanks for posting this. It brought back a great memory.

We happened on Moki Dugway by accident... following Google Maps in May of 2018 in our 25' Class C RV. We had to take it down. My husband's fingerprints are permanently embossed into the steering wheel, cause he hates heights... I thought it was stunning! Thanks for the video I only managed to get snapshots while being quiet and still so my darling could concentrate on not hitting the side of the RV on the rocks. Praise the Lord we did not meet another vehicle coming up, it would have been a close close squeeze!

My husband and I drove down this, pulling our 27’ camper. It was a route that Google suggested for us, on our way from Salt Lake to Monument Valley. We had NO idea it was even coming, until we saw the sign at the top 😳 It was SO scary.
We actually DID have a couple of vehicles pass us going the other direction 😳 AND, we had to use one of the pull outs for a FedEx truck to pass us. They were going so fast. We couldn’t believe it.

It is actually surprisingly wide ... but i can understand that first unexpected time going down it would be pretty scary!

There is a lot of "hype" regarding Moki Dugway it's a very pleasant drive with a wonderful view all the way up and down.

I've been up the Moki Dugway twice and down once, on my way to and from Monticello to Mexican Hat. It was back in the late 80's and there was no paving. What a view; it was almost as if I could see my brother's house in McElmo Canyon.

haha you didn't expect it, and HE was driving, that's why the Moki Dugway was so scary for you. In my case, I'd read about it ahead of time and was the driver, and it was wide and firm packed. So if you ever go again you'll know what to expect!

We discovered this accidentally in September 2020 after driving the Valley of the Gods road counter-clockwise. I thought it looked awesome so we kept going up to the top. Really enjoyed it!

Thanks for sharing your experience. It looks to be maintained and much wider than I imagined. Hogsback on Scenic 12 looks much more intimidating to me. I was expecting Moki to be the more "white-knuckle" trip. I'm just gathering knowledge so I can prepare for much needed exploration time!

You're right, it's pretty wide. I didn't feel unsafe on it at all.

Was on this road in 1978 when it was a dirt road and very narrow.. looks a lot safer now.. wanted to go on it 2 years ago but my friend who gets car sick on switch backs did not want to go on it…

I can relate. Travel companions who are scaredy-cats. Although, I got a few cases of elevation sickness in Colorado one summer, so I have some empathy for their experience.

It's just not that sort of switchback road, they're few and wide.

How in the world can you drive the Moki Dugway and miss the most spectacular overlook in the Southwest? Muley Point is the first left hand turn at the top of the Dugway (In fact your pull off at 7:01 you are looking directly at the point). You drive several miles West on a decent dirt road and you are there. There are plenty of videos here on YT.

Agreed. I don't understand why people risk their lives just for fun. I guess they don't really get the whole thing about only having one life, and when it's over, it's over. Just give it some thought. While you are lying at the bottom dying, will your last thought be: "Man what a rush that was!" or "I sure wish I hadn't done that." Darwinism.

    • @emjaynie2

I was very slow, not looking AT the phone just holding it up ... tell me you don't sometimes drive with one hand (like while eating for example), and chose to stop filming whenever it looked dangerous ... anyway I couldn't bring this video to you if I hadn't been CAVALIER ENOUGH to film it. You're welcome.
