    Hi Tristan! I live just outside of the park and wanted to let you and your subscribers know that there is another way to access the river. Every year during the Stone Fly hatch we get in many fisher enthusiast. If you enter through the Gunnison Gorge Wilderness Access Area there is a trail called Chucker Trail, it's definitely a four wheel drive road, but at the end there is a camping/picnic area. From the parking area there's a trail that trail that takes you down to the river. The trail is narrow and has many switch back, but very easy to walk and has beautiful scenery. At the bottom it opens up to a nice grassy area (large than most areas at the bottom) , a great place to relax, picnic, fish, and more. I've even seen people with pack mules carting kayaks down the trail. President Carter used to come out here every year to fish the river at this location. The next time you visit the Black Canyon, you might want to check this out.

    Hi Tristan, Greg here. Another good episode. High shiver factor. The Black Canyon is one of the most intimidating places I have ever visited. Had some friends that did a couple of climbing routes there and was always in awe. Steep, cold, dark and immense. Your description of the chaos at the bottom being like a machine with all the moving parts was a good one. Be careful out there Hans Solo. Thanks for the vicarious adventures. Looks like the last episode's via ferrata is now on our to do list.

      Thanks Greg! Back in my climbing heyday, I always wanted to go climbing in the Black but never got around to it. I even had the guidebook and would spend hours poring over the different routes. Still an awesome place even without the climbing, though!

    We were there a few years ago, it is amazing. We drove around the whole thing and stopped at every overlook even though we didn’t plan to. We had hotel reservations in Durango that night so drove down the “million dollar highway” at night. It was dark all the way from Ouray to Durango. There were mule deer EVERYWHERE. I think it was the most stressful drive we’ve ever had. But then we also stopped and saw more stars than I think I’ve ever seen in my life. It was a memorable trip for sure.

    • @SUVRVing
      @SUVRVing  3 роки тому +4

      Agreed, driving at night in the mountains is always nerve-wracking because of those dang deer. Glad you (and your car) made it out alive!

    My first trip to Black Canyon of the Gunnison was in 1970 when it was just a National Monument as I recall. Have been there a handful of times since but never to the North rim. It remains as beautiful and untouched as when I first was there. Thanks for renewing some great memories.

    Love the Black Canyon. Gunnison was my home for the 5 years before I moved to Yellowstone and I spent a lot of time there camping and hiking and of course fishing. I usually hiked into the Canyon from the western end as there is a nice BLM campground at the trailhead to make a basecamp from. Some of the largest Salmonfly hatches I've ever seen occurred in this stretch of the river.

    I visited this canyon back in the 80's, before it was a NP and was just a Naational Monument. I recall the saying then was: "There are canyons that are deeper and canyons that are steeper, but no canyon is AS deep or AS steep as the Black Canyon." Was so happy when its status changed to a NP, well deserved. Great video!

Not because of the sheer edges and heights. We visited the canyon in 1986, two years before we were married. We were both so taken with it's beauty that when our son was born in '94, we named him after the canyon. Took him there when he was four so he could see his namesake.

    When you held the camera over the fence it reminded me of when I was about 5 years old my parents took us to the Grand Canyon. We stopped at an overlook area and we were at the edge by the fence and my dad picked me up and held me over the fence and dangled me in the air and all I remember was thinking that he was going to drop me and I’d end up at the bottom of the Grand Canyon dead. My mother told him to put me down and don’t do that again.

    13,000 years old! That's boggling! I had no idea the US had human habitation that long ago.
    The rock art you show us is always amazing and always among my favorite segments of your journeys. It's interesting that the super early work seen in this video has none of the ubiquitous concentric circles, surreal human figures, or complex narratives found in so many other petro- or pictographs.

I did get to Grand Mesa and stayed at a campground for one night about four years ago, but got in trouble with the altitude. We stopped on a road trip and I did not realize the altitude or I would have stopped for a bottle of O2 before going up. Ended up napping while sitting through the night. We dropped altitude the next day and I was fine. It is beautiful up there. Watch for the moose. Saw several on the road out.

    I was a bit worried for you when you said you were going to go down into the canyon. Read info that recommended against it even warning of deaths that had occurred. So we did not attempt. I'm surprised more people don't know about this. I saw this on one of the very first road trips I went on with my parents as a kid and I've been hooked on nature ever since, specifically because of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Amazing, beautiful, spectacular place. Honestly I was .ore impressed by this than the grand canyon, mainly because of how narrow it is versus it's depth, and how it is pretty much a vertical drop straight down from top to bottom. Can't wait to get back there to see it again.

    I found this to be a really interesting and well done video. The content was intriguing and the quality of the production was excellent in my opinion. This is the first video of your's that I have viewed and I am well pleased that it appeared in my feed as I am now a subscriber. Thank you!

    Very interesting place that I wasn't even aware of! You make a very good guide and photographer. I appreciate the drone views and your setting up your camera to show us your hiking down the trail, which you then have to hike back up to retrieve. It would have been nice if you had included some geological explanations about the canyon's formation and what we're seeing in the canyon walls. Then there's also the flora and fauna. The fauna may be elusive, but the flora could be pointed out. I mostly backpack, but your SUV setup looks great! Thanks for the video.

    I went there 5 months ago and it is amazing for sure. I could hear the river rushing through, was on the north rim. Almost nobody else there and what a place to be.

    We visited a few years back, but only took the E. Portal Road down on the South side, got to the end on the East side. Really impressive, wished I knew about it say 40 years earlier (about to turn 70) and may have attempted one of the 'Routes' you mentioned. Going uphill sounds more fun even though it's a tougher trek....

    Thank you for sharing your adventure with us! I’m surprised that you didn’t stay longer or camp near the river to make the arduous journey more rewarding! Your return scramble to the rim in an hour would have impressed even the ancient inhabitants…

    We're from the UK and slowly going insane with withdrawal symptoms as our relentless hiking in US national and state parks, and BLM lands, out West has been in suspension for two years. This is first time for 20 years plus we haven't had an annual pass. The border reopening came too late for a trip back to the West in 2021 but we are booked on flights into Phoenix in September 2022 for a month. We've been to the BC of the Gunnison several times in past years so thank you greatly for this visit to the north side which we've never visited and to see what it's like down at the bottom. Looks a bit heavy duty, but not as terrifying as Angels' Landing in Zion which we've managed (we're now in our 60s). Last time we made it to the BC we also enjoyed the drive along the East Portal Road down to the Gunnison Diversion Dam which is really the easiest way to get to the river. East Portal Road heads east off the approach road to National Park about 1 mile before the Visitor Center.

    Went to Black Canyon of the Gunnison in 2019. I really hadn't heard much about it, but it seemed like a good place to check out on my way to Cortez. Holy cow, what an amazing place. I spent my day on the South rim and planned to go back to the North rim some day. After watching your video, it is going to be soon. Thanks for sharing your travels. I might just have to start planning my trips around your videos.

    In the 70's when I was at Western State I lead some members of our Climbing Club down the slot to check out the Painted Wall from the bottom. There was so much falling rock that we had to biv right as we got to the river. Headed back up the next morning. Awesome place to be...

    Hi Tristan!! This is right in my backyard. I haven't been here since the 90s; I need to revisit it. I love that descent trail!! My German Shepherd goes with me everywhere. I have a 40ft piece of 1inch webbing that I make a sling for him. I will top belay him up to 25feet. Anything longer and I just turn around....and live to the next hike. I am highly allergic to poison ivy though. So, I need to figure that part out.
    Safe travels!

    Black Canyon of the Gunnison is on my bucket list, this video makes me even more excited to get there. Experiencing the canyon from the bottom must have been spectacular. I've found you can find something beautiful and or interesting anywhere you go outside. You showcase everywhere you go in a spectacular way. You are a great inspiration to those of us who can travel and you provide a way to view places that some of us would never otherwise see. Thanks for you consistently wonderful videos full of remarkable beauty and detailed information !

    We didn't know Black Canyon NP existed until we were in the area this August during our 9 month excursion thru the west (almost every place you've filmed this year we had visited 2 wks - 1month earlier). It was absolutely mesmerizing. We were only able to see the south rim so love that you gave us views of the bottom and north rim. Your videos are spectacular-- footage, editing, narrating--everything! I enjoy them so much.

    You exited the canyon at triple the expected speed. You driving your car on the ridge and flying the drone at the same time was fabulous.

    • @SUVRVing
      @SUVRVing  3 роки тому

      I tend to go slow-ish on the descent because my knees aren't the greatest, but I've got good legs and lungs when going uphill. Luckily I can just tell the drone to follow the car and it does, so I didn't have to do both at the same time!

    Black Canyon looked rather otherworldly. It's a place I feel I need to see in person to get the true majesty of it. Very cool! I've been to Grand Mesa. I saw some amazing views! Another awesome place and video! Especially the views from the bottom, because I doubt I'll be climbing down there to see them in person.
