I live in Winnemucca Nevada and it's already freezing here. The last of the squash is frozen so I've been cleaning up my tiny patio garden and putting it to bed. I'm already thinking about what I will plant next year. This is the time of year I make gifts and do lots of sewing. I have 12 needle books put in zip lock bags to slow stitch and put together as gifts. I dead headed all my flowers this year and I've made seed envelopes from packing paper and plan to make seed books with them in it. The lid tip is fantastic. I didn't know the parm lids would fit regular canning jars. I've been measuring my doors and a few windows. I'm thinking about making quilts to fit them. There are so many cost effective ways to save money and keep warm.

We live in central Arkansas and don’t have much snow. Mainly between now and the first frost we need to bring in a lot of potted plants from the porches and decks, some decor items and porch rugs and reverse the direction of our ceiling fans. I do a little stocking up on food, like canned milk etc because we do have ice storms and live in a hilly section. Carole

Hi Robin. I am in Ohio. Finally starting to feel like fall here...at least for a few days! I got new tires on my car this year. My son yelled at me because my tires were almost bald! Glad he looks after me. One of his friends also comes and does yard work for me and helps with whatever I need him to do. Another blessing for sure! My freezer is fairly stocked and my pantry is not in too bad of shape. I am glad about that because I had some unexpected expenses with my stove dying and emergency vet bills. So I can shop my pantry for now while I build back up some of that money. I have several "Bent and Dent" grocery stores in my area that I shop to keep myself stocked up also. I have noticed these stores getting much busier in the last 6-12 months. I am guessing it is due to the increased price of groceries. Thank you for all your helpful tips and just for being a bright spot in my week!

I do have a significant other after my husband of almost 50 years passed away but he is very handy with cars so maintenance is not a problem even though we have a fairly new pickup truck that's still under warranty and he's very faithful about taking that in for service. In the Pacific Northwest south of Seattle not too much snow concern maybe a couple times a year. I have enough food I can probably feed the entire neighborhood for a month. This week, I planted bulbs, gathered supplies(home, thrift store, and craft store) for a few Christmas craft projects that I intend to do this season (hopefully some as gifts), watched a few videos on holiday crafting, purchased 2 long sleeve nightgowns and a new slip for winter. Also worked more on my dried herbs from the garden -- packaging, making seasoning blends to give as gifts for family. Thrifted a few tins and baskets for use at Christmas. Starting to ask what sort of Christmas treats my loved ones that I give treats to would like this year so I can get my baking organized. I think I have about half my Christmas shopping done.

Hi, I live in NE Indiana. We have had mild winters the past few years, hardly any snow but need to be prepared. My son gets the snow blower started for me and I usually only use it once or twice, so its nice to have if we do get snow. I have a small garden and have canned some soups and veggies. Always have canned goods in a pantry. Hurricane Helene made me think of what I don't have - like stocking up on batteries for flashlights, and needing to buy a few gallons of water just in case. My car is new, so no winterizing for that this year. Good idea you took care of your car Robin, and you have been wise and have funds to pay for repairs. I live alone, and have nice neighbors including a policeman. Makes me feel safe :-).

Hi Robin! I'm in east central Iowa. No shopping this week, but I continue to add items to my list, and I'm hoping to finish up my winter supply shopping by the end of the month. I was cleaning a basement window this week and knocked off a chunk of the window glazing (it's probably original to the house!) - so I'll be learning how to re-putty metal windows next week. I'm not sure I want to learn that, but doing it myself will save me paying someone. Ah, the joys of homeownership! Thanks for the tips, and the reminder to take care of car maintenance before the snow flies! Hope you have a blessed weekend! 💗

    • @simplefoodsimplelife9632
      @simplefoodsimplelife9632  12 годин тому +1

Hello Karen! A couple of years ago I had to apply new glazing to all of my storm windows. It is not difficult. The worst part is removing the old glaze and cleaning it up. And then of course it needs to dry etc. So much cheaper than hiring it done. I’ve been in my home almost 10 years. The first few years I replaced the basement windows which were metal. I hired someone to install them but I could only afford one at a time. I just got the last one in about 3 years ago. Just started with the worst one first. So glad I did. It’s made a huge difference. Thanks so much for being here.

Another great video! I saved a few of the shakey cheese containers and lids and I put the salt for sidewalk in it instead of lugging around a heavy container to work from. As I'm typing my comment another thought came to mind....I use the bottled coffee creamers and I'm thinking of using one of those instead, it would hold more of the product! I love your outlook about the car repair thing! I had a Honda Accord that I very much enjoyed driving and despite the low miles on the car, it was 17 years old and the electrical system went out on it. The garage tried several attempts at repairing the car but due to its age I was told they could no longer get parts so now I have a car payment at this age of life....not ideal but safety first and I still have to get to and from work so...Hope you have a great weekend friend! I knew a woman that froze her water in bottles like that, but then she became horribly ill. When the doctor's test results came back, they informed her she was toxic from plastic. She died shortly after that. Apparently the plastic breaks down when frozen and thawed repeatedly, and the toxins from the plastic go into the water. I stopped doing it after I heard she had passed away from it. Such a young woman with a lot of life left.

Amarillo Texas, could snow a ton, may barely snow. We never know. We have extreme winter weather and extreme summer weather here. I need a cover for my window unit air conditioner, a new snow shovel, rock salt, and a new cover for my motorcycle because I do not have garage to store it in for winter. Double checking my food stash. And water in case pipes freeze. Pull in all my water hoses, empty them out, and start the furnace in the barn. Batteries because winter winds here get intense and I need to have emergency power. Lights primarily. My van has to go in for major engine work. My last time I had it in garage my bill was 2200 dollars. So I am a bit frightened about that. They are saying possibly ten thousand to repair engine. But I had purchased extended warranty and I think they will cover it. Another thing I need to do is stock up on mousetraps, etc. we live on rim of a large canyon state park. Each season change we see mice coming in So I need to prepare for that. I saw a mouse outside earlier today. And tonight it may freeze so I think it is inevitable they come in. Then they go away for rest of the winter and come back again in the spring. I am seriously thinking of getting a kitten.

We are in California Sierras north of Yosemite National Park where we get snow up to the roofline, so we have to be prepared for heavy snow from October-March many years. Had some snow this week.
Folks on the grid can lose power for 3-4 weeks. Having a wood burning stove, solar for electricity and propane for cooking are a must have for me. Many of us are installing heating cables under sidewalks and driveways to keep snow from sticking.
Checking one's vehicles at least twice a year for non-monthly maintenance is wise! My 2003 Toyota Matrix has 68k miles (I do not drive a lot) Next month I want to get the oil changed. I try and follow Dave Ramseys advise on having an emergency fund for unexpected issues.
I reuse plastic lids and to remove any odor from the product that was in the container I stick the lids in a container with some baking soda for a few says.

A standard ice cube is 2 TB or 1/8 cup. It's good to know about the lids.
Today was a breakdown and portion and freeze food day for me. I froze hamburger buns ,tortillas, tomato paste. I generally buy the tube of tomato paste but it's quite a bit more expensive and it's really hard to get everything out so it's wasteful. I used a cookie dough scooper and froze the dollops and put them in a baggie.I also ground up some flax seed and put it in a jar in the freezer for my oatmeal and smoothies and baking.
I'm experimenting with freezing canned biscuits. I found a can of jumbo biscuits for $1..I rarely eat them but it's nice to have them on hand when I do and I don't want to make my own. Plus I only need two at a time. So they're freezing in a single layer right now and then I'll bag them. I mean, you can buy frozen biscuits, so these should be ok. And Google told me it was ok😅 and they're always right..RIGHT??
And I'm going to try to bake them in the air fryer. Has anyone done that?
Risk it to get the biscuit...lol

Heading for 80, live off coastal South Carolina. Born and raised in Sweden. Looking to see what kind of blankets I have that the pup didn't chew holes in. Warm clothes -- it can get cold here but we rarely get snow/ice. No other preps than making sure I have a decent stockpile of food. Sounds boring, huh?

Find lemons on sale? Zest them put the zest in the freezer in small batches you use in your recipes & squeeze the juice & put in ice cube trays to freeze. Then put in bags just as you did the broth. 😊

It seems the bill for your brakes was pretty high! I have an old car with a lot of miles in it and i too go to a local mechanic that i can trust, which when it comes to car repairs you can get so ripped off as a woman. Even when i was young i was treated like i didn’t know anything. I have a basic knowledge of cars because of the family i grew up in. Your bill was higher than i thought it would be. I live in Hermann Mo

I live in North Texas. Our winters can be very unpredictable...some years we get snow/ice, some years not. I stock up on canned goods and bottled water and get the furnace checked.

I was born in 1944. I was 30 years old in 1954. Like you I never fit in. My teachers always said I was much more mature, older than my actual age. I think they used to call me an old soul. I've always been fine with it. I live in central Ohio. I'm hoping to freeze to death considering how things are in this country at the moment. Keep smiling Robin. My dad always said keep smiling, it makes the rats wonder what they h*** you are up to. See you later!

Another kid that just didnt fit. Still dont. Its hard sometimes. I have been using the 2 liter bottles for ice packs for years. They work well and are free. Ice prices are high and the ice packs dont make a lake of water for your food to swim in like ice does.

Isn't that the truth about your food getting all wet? So irritating. And a bag of ice isn't cheap. I have various types of ice packs to use and some frozen water bottles, depending on what the need is and how much I'm trying to keep cold and in what kind of weather.
