  • Thank you so much Flint Spall and KB for the opportunity to start a killer conversation about a very well known point type of middle Tennessee. I hope this video helps shed some knowledge on the subject and I hope you and Kevin take it for what it is… my own jacked up opinions lol keep in mind both KB and Flint Spall I’ve leaned a ton from especially KB for typing discussions. Again both men I greatly respect. God bless boys and goodnight to all my supporters.

    Great video showing relationships in context from the same site. It's like you are describing my favorite site in North Alabama. All of the points you discussed look like they could have been picked up from the field I hunted for years until it was developed. I appreciate that you add thoughtful opinions and supporting means for your opinions instead of just putting points in a case. You are taking us on a journey whether we agree or not and that adds value to your channel! I could talk this stuff for hours if someone would listen!

      I feel ya brother it’s very hard to even find people that can have the conversation much less that even want to. Most old heads say I don’t know what you call it. I just call em rocks lol. I’m very different than most old heads. I definitely respect the time frames and characteristics and do my best to decipher what I’m finding. Knowing time frames and characteristics aren’t the end all be all either. It just helps narrow down a type. Also It’s very important to know what can be expected out of a site. Site collection is everything and even a broken base is studied. It’s just as important as any whole piece. I’m sure I’m not right on everything I say and think but having these discussions helps narrow the scope. I’m still constantly evolving and learning more and more. Having a voice and not saying anything tho would be doing my subscribers an injustice. Thank you for the kind words wether you agree or not. Thanks again and have a great day my friend

If someone in the future learns from this video then I did my part. Hope you have a great rest the day and thanks again for the comment

    Thanks for the invite.Glad to take a look and elaborate somewhat.I think you conceded that its possible some of the smaller examples that you emphasized frequently could be Elks, while indicating that chances are the points I featured with frequent emphasize on certain characteristics could be Bentons.Correct that statement if I misinterpreted, we have the video.:>) I'll buy that.So then based on my use of characteristics and your use of those same characteristics, whose accurate? I think what we can walk together on, is that only 2 point types in Tn. have this type flaking whether done early or later, and both favor whether early or later the twist in the blade.However bevel or twisted blades occurred in most all eras and cultures to a degree, yet we've been programmed to think only EArchaic hosts beveling, but any and all cultures practiced it with maybe the exception of paleo, but they could have as well.,,but anyway, to regard any notion that Elk is a 1000 yr earlier than Bentons, one being EA the other MA,,the Elk would be the obvious choice for heavy Basel Grinding, but EA classed artifacts and earlier wasn't the only ones grinding bases. :>) I suppose one might sum it up with a few words about that all popular dog chasing its tail.You and I can agree that 2 points in Tn. have diagonal flake scars.Don't feel the need to apologize if you feel a contradiction is an offense, first: typology isn't absolute and secondly: No point in letting the contributors to Overstreet with their opinions and observations divid anybody.We still enjoy collecting and talking about artifacts regardless.Later on Man!!

      Hahaha no doubt. I’ve always told my wife the history channel or some channel like that would be crazy not to track down RRH, specks world, Seneca relics, you name the legendary channels and start a cool live version of the videos. Also I try hard as duck to learn as much as I can about what I’m finding. History is very near and dear to my heart. Used to be a big American history guy and then when I found the rocks I was hooked. Put down my rod and rifle immediately. Either way thanks for the comment brother. I’m glad you enjoyed it and have a great night.

      Thank you very much. I try and share what is my opinion in hopes of gaining others perspectives/knowledge. I’ve read countless articles and spent many hours researching point types but still miss type things plenty of times. I honestly take what I read and formulate my own theories on the subject. What is science anyways but an educated guess based on the information presented. Either way thank you so much for commenting and I’m glad you enjoy watching the rock talk videos.

    It's cool seeing the transitional characteristics in points. I'm sure ideas were exchanged then like we do now days. And I also wonder how many early points were picked up by later people and reworked to be utilized as a more familiar style to them. If only they did knapping videos thousands of years ago... 🤣

    • @benallen7793
      @benallen7793  2 роки тому +1

      Hahaha no doubt brother. Love the viewpoint. If they had we wouldn’t have these questions. Excellent excellent video and discussion..not only can there be transitional points"many"..but in keeping with any other society,even during the height of craftsmanship in the most accomplished cultures you are going too have those who are absolute masters who are capable of doing brilliant and astounding work and still those that are part of the craft that aint near as accomplished or capable. So in that sense whats too keep one individual from turning out a complete slug of a point that's all over the place while the village master is sitting over there right beside him turning out a 3/16 thick 7in long turkeytail benton made out of bullseye buffalo river or pink flintridge...? !!!!!

    • @benallen7793
      @benallen7793  2 роки тому +1

      Not one thing is keeping that from happening and did happen many times I’m sure as part of the learning process. I believe that if you had a very good skill like being a master knapper you probably didn’t have to hunt as much and probably spit out smokers left and right for the young guns to use. Which is probably why so many great examples are lost cause they weren’t the maker and didn’t appreciate it near as much. I also believe that middle Tennessee was such a sought after hunting ground that the whose who in knappers were all present to contend for the prize positions to ensure survival. Thank you for the comment. Love you thinking on this subject. Take care and have a great night

      Hahaha there are tons of points in the archaic age. Especially the mid to late archaic. When it comes to middle Tennessee tho these are the two predominant types that do have these characteristics. Just wanted to push the envelope a little and show that just because a point is beveled and has diagonal flaking doesn’t automatically make it an elk river. Yes knowing your site is huge and knowing what’s predominantly found there helps big time. Still doesn’t make things absolute just having the characteristics of something is the only point I wanted to make. Thanks for the comment brother and enjoy this beautiful day
