Never heard of him before. Japan also executed Christians long before they accepted religious freedom, so hearing these stories makes me sad that these countries in such a close-to-modern time period could be so backwards. But these stories of martyrs are also inspiring as well!

"Praying to saints" in the Catholic tradition means asking for their intercession, as Mother Mary had exemplified at the wedding feast at Cana upon finding that the wine barrels were empty. How did Jesus respond? He said to her it wasn't his time yet, but nonetheless went on to resupply the barrels by converting water into wine, thereby performing His very first miracle.
If you are a Protestant Christian, I'm sure there were times when you had asked your Pastor and friends at Church to pray for you, especially during times of need. Catholic saints do the same for us; the only difference being that they exemplified Christ (often through martyrdom) during their lifetimes and are now literally in His presence. Hope this makes sense.
