Fellow vet farmsteaders checking in. Love this build, we're looking forward to seeing your update so we can mull over your deaign updates before we build ours out. Thanks. Stay salty brother!
Absolutely! New vid should be up on June 1st if not earlier. I still haven’t seen any soldier flies yet. I’m a Marine and it’s good to run into someone who knows something about the real Salt Life! Lol!!!
Looks great man! I have been wanting to do a bit of renovations myself, setup a greenhouse, chickens, rabbits & black soldier fly harvester etc. hope it's going well!!!!
I do this kind, i place scraps from my kitchen in a bucket when its covered with Magots i pour out for the chickens. They love it . I been doing long time , its easy for me and i dont hv to build
Hey, great to find your site! I’ll checkout your other vids before I ask q’s. I have the channel Sharkhauler - I’m off-grid in WNC. I would like to set up something similar as an auto feeder for chickens. Trying to figure out a worm harvesting apparatus based on recycled wood pallets… same with the black flies. I’ve written two books on Amazon for building with pallets and intend on a few more… I have a 2x 2 raised pallet chicken coup dried in, but I haven’t had a chicken in my life unless it was cooked…
I’m actually making a video this weekend of the modifications I’ve made to this year’s version. I created more surface space for the larvae to travel, improved drainage and changed how I have it sitting. New video will be up soon.
Yes, it worked really well! The soldier flies go away over the winter. When they start coming back I’m planning on doing another video with modifications I’d make. I’m actually designing it now.
@@saltydawghomesteadsweet. Looking forward to it. Been thinking about making one for my chickens and the juice inside is supposed to be really nitrogen rich to use for fertilizer.
@@saltydawghomesteadyou can overwinter larva in your house by making a small setup inside a cheap mesh clothes hamper. When danger of frost has passed you can get a jump on the season.
It worked great! Soldier flies go away during the winter and don’t come back until the temps warm up a bit. I’m working on a slightly different design to improve on this one. I’ll put out a video as soon as soldier flies come back!
@@uncleharley1 I normally wait until I start seeing soldier flies. I haven’t seen any year, but I’ve been looking. They like hanging out in my rabbit manure. In the next couple weeks I’ll be making my new version of the one I made last year. The one last year did GREAT! But they didn’t exit as well as I’d like! It produced a ton of soldier fly larvae though. If things go as planned, I’ll most likely have the new video out around the 1st of June. Thanks for subscribing!
Like the delivery. Information with no BS. I’m a fellow self sustainability advocate. Keep thinking.
Thank you! I appreciate that!

You can also harvest the larve droppings like earthworm castings and its great for the garden. Very bialogocally alive. Good luck with it all
@@danielsheehan8313 Yes! I added some to one of my rows last spring and that row really performed extremely well!

@@MikeB-q4n I’m going to redo my BSFL harvester AGAIN! Lol. I’ve found some that perform a lot better. I’ll be recording a video for sure.

I see the video is a year old at this point, how have you found this to work for you?
I actually rebuilt it this spring and did an update on it as well. Check out my BSFL Playlist. Thanks for watching and for the comment! 🙏🏽
