Answering your last section about why some cloths are so thick, those are office wear, in Malaysia most of our offices air cond can be very cool, when you seat and work for hours. The office building temperatures are centralised and are set at ridiculously low degree because of air cond maintenance issues.. don't even start me on that topic hahaha... also the last sweater that you picked up that would probably be used by University students maybe and campus air conds can also very cool at times too.
Interesting didn't know this, seems like they probably shutdown most or all of the red light district stuff in KL huh? Except for Changkat of course which there's plenty of it going on
@35:00 What's the point of wearing thick clothing in Malaysia? Because most of us stay indoor and blow super cooling air conditioner mostly while working at the office, watching movie at the cinema yadi yada. Or visit to cold places in Malaysia like Genting Highlands, Cameron Highlands or Fraser's Hill.
Hi Ben......watched a few of your videos now and have enjoyed your walk abouts. I have been to KL a couple of times and was thinking about spending more time there in retirement. Seen the mm2h plans but may struggle to qualify. How do you stay over there? Or do you have to leave Malaysia after a certain time and come back in again. As a British I get 90 days in Malaysia on tourist visa. I was thinking if that 90 day goes then go Thailand for 30 days on standard visa and possible Vietnam for the 45 days UK tourist visa allows. The do you think it's then possible to return to Malaysia for a further 90 days and just keep that kind of rotation going. Have you had experience of that?
You're good! You've not been to China town? In any case, you can get some extraordinarily good buys (from RM5)- on genuine items, during our nationwide sale (eg National days- 31 Aug and 16 Sep)
For sure I've been to Chinatown, I used to stay at Big M hotel quite a lot which is basically Chinatown or it's on the border. And one of my favorite Mamak stalls is there called Dilla Restaurant. Never bought clothes over there though!
I've not been to that part of town for years. Looking at your vids, I realise the traders there are now dominated by foreigners. They look like Bangla, Nepali, Pakistani and Indonesian, obviously illegal immigrants. We know just by looking and hearing them speak. How are they even able to openly set up shop? Even China town has become Bangla and Nepali town.
I’ve come to realize KL is completely dominated foreign migrants, and it’s not even just certain neighborhoods but seemingly all of them. At first I just saw it as diversity but after spending more time here I’ve come to see that it’s an issue.
As a KL-ite myself, I often find Petaling Street seedy, but when the craving for uncle Kim's taufu fah (beancurd pudding), ice cold longan drink and apam balik from an old Chinese uncle, I just ignore that aeediness and eat/drink to my heart's content 🤣
In the KLCC and Bukit Bintang areas there are similarities to NYC, more than other places I've been in Southeast Asia. I've never been to China, Japan, Korea so maybe those have more similarities even I'm not sure
The chowkit mural says in casual speak with dialect "Tu Dia"/ Itu Dia meaning That's it!. The other said Harum Maneh (Harum manis) a type of green mango( shown in yellow?) . Personally, i think its the best Mango variety better than the ones you get here in America. The other one says Haria penang ! another casual speak but Haria doesn't sound Malay maybe it might be saying Halia (ginger). For Malays long pants and even long sleeves are seen as modest and respectable, often a requirement for the religion. The long bus rides and movie theaters are often set to cold you need warm clothes. Ever been to Genting highlands? its also cold up there. That's why you see jackets and sweaters they are for these situations.
kampung baru is not affordable trust me bro it may look affordable but it isn't, trying to own one can cost millions even the rent is quite pricey and its not a house but a town house yet their rent is like any apartment you rent in KL area
Chow kit is nothing like it was before man, when I was a kid 30 years ago, that place was wild with drugs, scams and prositutes you could get for RM$25 a pop. Its just not infamous like that anymore. BTW that included Brickfields and other places in KL as well.
Yea not bad but not a big fan of brown since it doesn't match so well with black, and I like to wear mostly black/white/grey, but I have lots of color stuff too. The shirt I wear in this video actually has a lot of orange/yellow in it
No jeans. Too bulky for travel and too hot for KL. Though a lot of Malay men wear them...🥵 I think it's a conservative fashion thing. Only tourists and laborers wear shorts. My wife says I should push a cart and collect recyclables while I go on walks in shorts.😂 Hard to keep whites white unless you was them separately. And black shirts are hot in the sun. I like grays, blues, green. White shirts turn gray.😁 They set up for nights. Only idiot tourist are out shopping in the mid-day heat.😂 Try a moisture wicking T. They don't show the sweat as much and dries fast. Feels freezing when you walk into A/C.🥶
Haha that's funny. And I couldn't imagine wearing jeans in this climate! My issue with moisture wicking T shirts is that they're made with polyester or nylon, which are harmful for the body since microplastics leech into the skin. Even though I drink bottled water which is terrible, but hard not to when traveling.
In the 80s-90s, Chow Kit was a favourite place for locals to shop esp for the low-mid income earners.. but now the area is full with foreigners esp Indonesians & Bangladeshis... the stalls n shops there are man by the foreigners ....I’m afraid most of them are illegals..hence they act cautiously n not so friendly...

Westerners may think it's rude to barge in when entering shops or restaurants & expect to be greeted by the guests & vice versa. But in this part of the world, it is NOT CUSTOMARY for any type of greetings or pleasantries that you're used to. They'll simply find it annoying & unexpected. You'll need to understand that non responsiveness is NOT a sign of disrespect or lack of acknowledgement. It's very normal. On the contrary, meaningless pleasantries (actually that's how people think here) are actually quite off putting & such a pain to deal with, so it's best to skip them entirely. Speak only if you need something or have something to say & everyone will be happy. Just observe the locals & how they interact, so you'll understand how to fit in.

Chow Kit where foreigners live and work bro. Maybe some businesses are owned by locals but the workers are foreigners. Because there are cheap and low-quality goods sold there, it is the focus of foreigners working in Malaysia. It is still possible to go out late in the morning there because there is an active wet market but not in a secluded lane. Just yesterday, several people from Pakistan were arrested hiding behind mobile phone and laundromat businesses, but they also did fake immigration stamps and some female beggars using small children who were given cough medicine. We don't know how many more such syndicates are by foreigners.
