    I'd like to see Will do a 30 day challenge where he stretches every day. There are lots of specific stretching regimens that are for bodybuilders, like yoga for bodybuilders. His overall health would be improved for sure, as well as a much-reduced chance of injury.

    A huge factor that a lot of people miss that contributes to long life is lower body mobility and strength. Several studies show that that being able to sit of the floor comfortably for extended periods of time AND also the ability to get up from the floor without using hands, or even knees, is a very big sign of longevity. Deep squats, sitting cross legged, etc, it helps with circulation due to the compressive nature of the various positions (deep knee, ankle, hip flexion) against a relatively hard floor mat…

    Been here in Okinawa for over a year. I've noticed that a good amount of the elderly community will go to the gym and lift. But eating on the floor, little furniture, and minimal space is super accurate.

  • @HungryTrashPanda
    @HungryTrashPanda Рік тому +88

    I moved to Okinawa about 3 years ago, and the one thing that’s probably extended my life significantly is sleeping on a floor futon and using a Japanese dining table where you sit on the floor as well. The up and down flexibility and strength changes are drastic.
    As far as the diet. That’s sort of true, but honestly there’s not many who follow it here, though aspects do remain. Portions are way smaller than your bowl of sweet potato, you’d probably be hungry. The elders who live so long are tiny tiny tiny. Many of them barely chest high to me, and I’m only 5”3”. So they don’t need as many calories.
    Sometimes I think the key to their life span are all these hills, their close knit groups of friends and community, hard work, exercise, and the unchanging feel of the island.

    • @nekokitty90
      @nekokitty90 Рік тому +12

      They have a theory that when you over eat excess calories, it makes your body work a lot harder and ages your cells faster. So part of it is they're probably eating just enough calories that they need and not much excess.

      Small people also tend to live longer so maybe that plays a part as well, which would make sense cause there's a lil community in Italy where there's extremely many old people as well, they're small too and live by the rules of everythin' in moderation and enjoyin' lil things, even if they aren't directly healthy, like a smoke once a day...

      @@nekokitty90 its proven (in mice at least, but most likely also in humans) that starvation slows down aging. now obviously starvation has bigger issues that make it worth it as an 'anti aging' technique, but its likely true that not overeating (and maybe even under-eating a little) is good for your health. Likewise there's a few studies into fasting that show its good for you in various ways.

    What most people don't take into account with the Japanese lifestyle is just how much they walk. Take a trip to Japan and see how much walking you do in a day. It really does add up. Also the Japanese bath culture. Their are many studies on the health benefits of hot baths.

A part of that is the way they live in their community : they hangout every night drinking high proof low sugar alcool moderately. It is assumed to deepen socials bonds and participate actively to reduce stress. You can also add the proximity with nature : in Japan they are many researches and care center centered around Shinri Yoku, basically "forest baths", with is supposed to have many benefits, especially on stress levels.

To see you practice it and explain many things while trying it are the exact things I would hear my teachers (well Sensei) mention when they were teaching us in class, during conventions, and even during Kangeiko. Cap. Do you all honestly know how hard is it to raise land meat? It's f.king hard. Most people were vegetarian or pescatarian back then not because they want to but because they need to. Most peasants are required to tend the land, they don't have space for pigs.

      Yes, Ive lived one year in iriomote island and one year in ishigaki island, they raised pork since before ww2, they eat boar with noodles, there is scrabled eggs with a bunch of vegetables and sometimes Spam. They snack a fried dumpling and eat sugar cane sweets.
      Tebichi which is roasted pork knee is also a very traditional dish
      Not to mention they consume awanori, a 40% alcoholic beverage

      @@kenchanwaki If we do the math, Japanese aren't consuming large amounts of fat and potatoes, you can't have an adult obesity rate below 10% compared to the US 40% by eating the same, it's physically impossible and American of Japanese descent will be much more in line with US obesity rates than Japan so there's no genetic miracle or anything. People form eating patterns probably in their formative years and before 1980 diets wouldn't have had high meat because it's too expensive. Maybe now younger people below 50 have diets that have more meat and other things not that healthy and they probably won't live as long.

    i think it's important to note that the 80% of eating is from sharing a meal LOL. i hope people don't take away that it's more important to eat less to live a longer life, but the portions are small because it's shared, but there's usually a variety of side dishes that are mainly vegetable-based (and prepped ahead of time to eat throughout the week for every meal because after the war, it was important to utilize everything). but also, there's a very sweet saying in most asian cultures that's like "watching you eat something deliciously makes me full," so i promise if someone loves you, you aren't starving 😂

    I've actually been making it habit to eat my meals without any distractions--no phone, no tv, no NOTHING. It's interesting Will brings this up because I've learned that metabolism is triggered by a hormone called Leptin, which DECREASES appetite (when to start digesting), and releases Ghrelin, which INCREASES appetite (prepares for ingestion)... technically, multitasking isn't real. So, when you're distracted while eating, your body's metabolism doesn't know what to do or which hormone to release. Just a fun fact for anyone who reads the comments, okay bye

      I don't think that's entirely true, just partly. That's kinda like saying since multitasking doesn't exist when you brush your teeth in the morning your body doesn't know to pulse out testosterone, or it doesn't know to release adrenaline if you take Ephedrine while watching TV. Some functions in our bodies are involuntary

By the way there's lots of strange wonderful fruits down in the tropical regions. FYI if u can find the golden dragon fruit (yellow outside and white on the inside), that is sweet and freakin delicious, super refreshing. Plus dragon fruit is great for getting u to go to the loo cos of the very high fibre content.

    I recently got hit with carpel tunnel syndrome, on top of scoliosis, arthritis and a missing hip femur. I now kinda wished I'd build up more functional movements like getting up and down easily, with as little involvement of my hands as possible. I feel we easily fall into the trap of, if it hurts or is damaged, move less, rather than find ways to move around it and it's not a fun way to grow old.
    (Given I'm still young, but many issues solidified in my childhood living by these believes from my parents combined with the bad luck of some disease and morbid obesity.)
