The 1953 Topps set is my favorite. I only need the Mays to complete a completely graded set. I has been a lot of fun and taken me around 18 years to do. I am glad you made the video because you don't see many 1953 Topps sets on UA-cam.
New Sub here! The 53 Set is one of my All time Favorite sets, And to see all of these cards together its easy to see why thats so! Amazing Jackie Robinson and Mickey Mantle cards!!! This is one of the Greatest Set showcase videos I have ever seen, thanks for showing!
Very nice '53 Topps set. I'm with you on how much I love the artwork. This was definitely Topps' golden era even though it was their second year. It is truly iconic and appealing. Thanks for taking us on this journey.
These look great Rick! Especially how they look displayed in the binder and the condition you can't complain about. Cool to see that blue sky in the background of these. Glad to hear the history of this set and thanks for dropping some knowledge! Very nice and thanks for sharing these!
Hey Rick! So many thoughts in my head on this video. I must admit that I have always preferred Bowman to Topps in the early 50s. I can't necessarily put my finger on why. However, this video really got me to take closer look at the 53 Topps set. I have never seen it laid out in a binder before. My first impression is that I will have to watch this video more than once because some of the cards have so many details on them it can give you sensory overload. This is the type of set you really want to take your time and look at. I find myself wanting to look at it once by focusing on the backgrounds and then again just looking at the portraits. I think the condition you put it together in helps with the overall presentation. I am by no means a condition snob and not all sets have to look pristine, but this is the type of set that looks so nice in mid-grade and above because of the artwork and colors. Of course, there are exceptions, but some of these cards are so colorful and detailed. You don't want condition to interfere. Generally, I don't feel the same about 52 Topps because some of the cards looked washed out, which is why I am not as big of a fan. I did not know about the black block for NL and red block for AL. I love the look of the vintage logos that Topps loved to use in the 50s and then went away from after 1965 all the way to 1987. I could point out dozens of cards, but I will name a few hat stuck out to me. The orangish color on the Johnny Klippstein and Jim Hearn over the stadium backdrop is just beautiful. The spectrum of colors with the yellow on the Joe Collins, orange on the Gus Niarhos, the shades of green on the Ferris Fain, Bob Cain and Harvey Haddix, the blue on the Paul Minner and the contrast in reds on Willard Nixon and Tommy Morgan is striking. Interesting so many Pirates have full body shots. This is the type of set you want to arrange in certain ways to capture the different backdrops together. I am not advocating playing with these valuable cards, but it would be fun to come up with different displays. I didn't even get into the stars, which are beautiful. That is my favorite Willie card and I love the B prominently displayed on Spahn's hat. Thanks for sharing these wonderful cards.
Someday when you come to LA, Terry, we'll take out all my 53s and you can show mw how to display them. I'll sit there with my mouth open and saying I never noticed my cards that way. HAHAHA. I still need to place my 52 Bowmans next to each other. I totally agree on the condition. I am also not a condition snob, but for this set, with the colors, the portraits, the background, the logos, the set should be in at least a VG condition. It just makes the set pop better. 1953 was a great year for card collectors between Bowman and Topps. Bowman didn't have a bad set from 50 to 54 IMO. Thanks for watching, Terry!
Beautiful set. The 53 may be the nicest looking set from the 50's from Topps and is right up their with the 53 Bowman color and (my personal fav) the 52 Bowman. Also love those binders. Great way to show off the cards. Have a great weekend Rick!
Thanks Mike.I agree, 1953 was a great year for collectors. I really like the 52 Bowman's as well. I like the binder. I am sad the creator passed away. He had all four sports, all years. Thanks for watching. Stay warm this weekend!
Rick, I don't know how I missed this in the past. What a wonderful unhurried browse through an iconic piece of nostalgia! As far as Boston Braves in the second series, I think that Topps rushed the printing of that series because of worries about the results of Bowman's litigation - rightly so, as it turned out.
Interesting story on the Boston/Milwaukee logo on the card. 1953 is the jewel of my collection. I still can't believe I own that set. Was fun to work on. Thanks for watching!
I love flipping through a binder of a vintage set like this. I find with some sets seeing them all together just makes flipping better and with some sets they get boring and monotonous. Either 53 set are in the firmer. Great stuff and congrats and completing a classic set.
As a fellow builder and lover of this set, this was awesome to watch Rick! This is my favorite set all time. I’m down to only the Mantle to go. I currently only have the Jackie, Spahn, Paige and Mays slabbed. I use the 91 Archives cards to hold the place for my graded cards. My last push through the high numbers was pretty tough. I found the Hal Newhouser and Gilliam to be some of the most elusive to find. Johnny Riddle and Ken Raffenberger were tough to find as well. I was lucky to get the Podres and Milt Bolling in a large lot of cards at last year’s National. 1952 was both Dick Groat’s rookie year and Hank Sauer’s MVP season. Congrats on completing this! Mine is in much worse condition but hopefully I can join you in completing it soon!
You are so close!!! That's a great idea regarding the 91 Archives. I'll have to remember that. I will look forward to watching you finish the set. Its such a beautiful set!!
Hey Rick! Great video, I just came across a potential dozen '53 cards but they don't pass the light test. The feel and the look seems correct. Could you tell me if your 53 cards let any light through? It would save me money from sending them to an authenticator if the card stock doesn't pass the light test😢
I never ran into an issue with the light test. I don't worry the cards are fake, but I get they are out there. You were smart to pass. I bought about 40% of the set through Just Collect as they were breaking a set. Also, all of high end cards I bought as graded cards (Mantle, Mays, Paige, Jackie, etccc.). I just made photocopies of those cards for the binders. Are you building this set? This set is the pride and joy of my set. Still can't believe I own it. I appreciate you watching!

I will slowly try to build this. Your set looks great in that binder.
Great set. Amazing to see it all together. So many iconic cards.
Thanks Alan. Love this set. Can't wait for your next video!

Beautiful art in these cards
Yeah, 1953 is a great set cause of the artwork. Thanks for watching!
Awesome looking set Rick.

You got that right, iconic set. 👏
Love this set! It needs a Ted Williams card though (Musial too).
Awesome, Rick, Best Topps set ever. Less than 70 left for me so I hope to be joining you in the club soon.
Looking forward to your next video/podcast, John!
