I use an odd approach in that I don't focus on the ball...when I do I thin em. Rather, I focus on the ground an inch or so in front of the ball. Really zone on like a blade if grass...by hitting that spot, I gather ball first, then ground. I've GOT to see the impact...keep my head down with eyes focused on that tiny target through impact, or..."see the strike!" If I pull my head without seeing that, it's thin every...single...time. see the strike, pure gold. In that my one and only swing thought, and trigger, is "see the strike". Incorporating your system and teaching with my spot focus has been revolutionary! At age 69 I'm making the most consistent, repeated ball striking of my life. And FINALLY beat my dreaded over the top...thanks Tom!
That's AWESOME, Richard!! And for those who are disciplined enough to do what you describe, that's a fabulous recipe for extra crispy impact. Thanks for sharing your approach. Keep up the great work and have fun out there!! TS
Over the top guy here. I find that when I focus on using my right oblique in the down swing, it keeps my club path in the happy zone and also helps with the proper release and extension.
I'm glad to learn that you have figured out a feel to help you get the club on the proper path - nice job!! Here is another Happy Zone lesson that may also help if you've not already seen it: ua-cam.com/video/7KZ7eREvPIY/v-deo.html Keep up the great work! Well then, it appears I have to appropriately discharge my duties as official greeter: _"Welcome to "the dark side", William, where the spoils of "conventional" instruction - chronic inconsistency, physical pain, and endless frustration - yield to the fruits of effortless and body-friendly enjoyment of this great game for a lifetime."_ 😆 Welcome aboard, embrace the transformation process, and let me know if you need assistance!! Cheers! Tom
I’ve been trying to teach myself the game for a couple of years now and have scoured UA-cam and the internet for a simple answer to, “what should I be thinking during my swing?” Keep these lessons coming!
Hi Nick, The short answer to your question is "nothing", or perhaps a maximum of one mechanical thought when you're out playing on the course. Of course it takes a good amount of intelligent, properly applied practice time and effort to get to that point! You may wish to consider enrolling in the SagutoGolf online school. For just $10 US/month or $99 US/year you'll have unlimited access to a comprehensive members-only system for the full swing, the short game, and much more. The school's intuitive course curriculum greatly simplifies the entire process through succinct, step-by-step videos, and I'm regularly adding new content. This will really put you on the fast track towards learning everything in a well-organized, self-guided fashion. There's even a members' forum where you can ask me specific swing-related questions and suggest new content ideas, plus you'll also have access to all exclusive "Crispier Than KFC Club" UA-cam channel members' content at no additional charge. Here's a link if you'd like additional info: saguto.golf/p/golf-swing-simplified-tom-saguto-pga. In the meantime, thanks for your comment and yes - I'll definitely keep these channel lesson videos coming!! Tom
Hi Kyle, I truly appreciate your kind words and I am very glad the instruction on my channel has benefited your game!! Thanks for sharing and keep up the great slice-free work!! Stay crispy, Tom
That's fantastic, David!! I'm very glad to know that this lesson video finally delivered your "AHA!" moment!!!! Thanks for sharing, and Bombs Away!!! Tom
I am very happy to become a “crispy” follower of Saguto Golf. These are wonderful tips & instructions for a great game. My golf game needs improvement & I’m taking these lessons to the course. It’s time to increase my golf performance while decreasing my stroke play. Playing with a new edge! Thanks, Tom!
I tried to think of a different way to present this lesson…but I couldn’t. You nailed ! Just like you always do. OH, and the guitar thing. Turns out quite a few tour players are music lovers like Peter Jacobson. He had a band called Jake Trout and the flounders. Peter played guitar. Payne Stewart and Mark lye sang. Can’t remember others. They have two albums still available.😊
Thanks again for your kind words and support, H Byrd!! Yes - Jake has got some great material! John Daly has been known to appear on stage as well. I'm sure there are many others. Cheers! Tom
I had a funky inconsistent swing, your videos have helped me simplify the swing and get more consistent. Your messaging is simple and easy to relate to, for me anyways. Thanks.
Hi Steve, I truly appreciate your kind words and I am very glad the instruction on my channel has benefited your game!! Thanks so much for sharing and keep up the great work!! Tom
Great tip...shoulder to shoulder. Pulling the right shoulder back is simpler than pushing the club back with the left side although in reality both sides are engaged. Nice swings...demonstrating the passive nature of the arms in relationship to the shoulders and torso. Really nice swings.
Thanks Don - I'm glad you enjoyed this video lesson and tip, and I appreciate your kind words! If you haven't already done so please consider subscribing to my channel as there is plenty more great content in here plus new episodes airing weekly! Tom
Been watching saguto all winter up here in canada. Just had a game breaking 1st range session Of the year, yahoo thanks TOM. I had hogan and hips in my head today Jack

I'm glad you enjoyed this lesson video, Tom!! Hmm.....🤔 I've never had someone tell me that they "love swing thoughts".... 😆 Just to be clear, I much prefer that golfers have no more than ONE swing thought when on the course!! Cheers! Tom
@@SagutoGolf I love swing thoughts because they are usually not too technical. They are mostly a feel thing. Like I try to point the back of my left hand to the ball on the downswing.
I'm a high handy cap player +20 from time to time I get a low round in meaning I break 90, September 9 I started the on line course $99 for the year (I'm saving that much in golfballs)guys my slice is gone I'm playing much better golf and I cant wait to play my next round my last four rounds were 83,82,82,82.most of the basic moves you can practice in your home for 10 minutes .on the range I'm really working on things hitting further and straighter. Thanks Tom I'm playing at a different level and loving the game more then ever.
Hi Garry, I truly appreciate your kind words and I am very glad the instruction in the online school and here on my channel has benefited your swing - and your resulting enjoyment of this great game - to such an extent!! But let's be clear - your embracing the process and putting in the necessary time and effort are what have transformed your golf swing!! All I did was provide you with a road map to get there!! Thanks for sharing your success, and keep up the great work!! Tom
@@SagutoGolf Tom I just went out and played with 3 guys from my league all three are much better players then me the league ended the middle of August,I started your program Sept 9 .all of them were blown away with the improvement .driving the ball irons I stayed right there with them drove the green on a short par 4 246 yards, hit all par three shot 84 still working on things and want to be more flowed it will come thanks again
This was an interesting tip. Tried it on the course on Sunday and it really helped me not make too much of a lateral move to the left on my downswing. It was a weird feeling which tells me that i May be on the right track. When I felt I did it 100% correctly I was hitting my driver 20 yards further. I have a low handicap so always looking for more consistency in my game. Thanks!
That's a rather significant yardage boost for a low handicapper, Andy! I battle a similar issue with too much lateral movement on the downswing, so I do like this thought as a means of reigning that in a bit. Anyway, I hope this tip serves you well and with consistency as you put some additional time into it! Thanks for sharing! Tom
Hi Tom, used your tip without even going to the range, I’m73, shot a 91, maybe I got lucky, But I was hitting the ball better, not one fat or thin shot, on the green putting for par many times, Thanks. Ron
I'll be out trying this just as soon as it stops raining! My game has improved tremendously since I've been following you but the best thing is that I go out knowing that the wheels are not going to fall off. My consistency is now very good but on the odd occasion when I have a duff shot it is always because my shoulder turn has got a bit flat. This tip should sort that out. Many thanks!
Hi Caroline, I truly appreciate your kind words and I am very glad the instruction on my channel has benefited your game!! I hope this most recent lesson helps you to overcome that occasional flattening issue. Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work!! Cheers, Tom
I appreciate that, Gary!! I know it sounds like a strange concept to those who have only ever subscribed to a swing model that is based on shifting weight from back to front, but I assure you that this swing is anything but a reverse pivot! Yours is a good question, though, because it represents an often misconstrued notion and occasional invalid criticism of the Stack & Tilt swing, and as such I always appreciate the opportunity to respond and clarify. You start with your weight forward (55/45 on the front side; 60/40 for the longer clubs), increase that same weight forward to the top of the backswing (70/30), and further increase the forward weight during the downswing from halfway down (80/20) through impact (90/10) and to the finish at 95/5 forward. There's no "weight shift", therefore - unless one were to fall backwards - there's nothing to reverse or pivot!! And the result is a low-maintenance, body-friendly, consistent, and tremendously powerful swing! It is important to understand that the videos, lessons, and drills on this free channel - while fully aligned with the swing method I teach - address a variety of topics, issues, and common flaws/fixes from one episode to the next. They are certainly not intended to be taken as a sequential learning platform like the structured curriculum of my online school, which I strongly recommend to anyone who truly wishes to get on the proper path towards learning and owning this swing. Hi Tom - greetings from the UK, my son and I are now delighted new subscribers to your online golf school. Can you give us a tip on how to maintain the hand position you have at impact with the left wrist straight and the right wrist flexed. It seems that the ball goes left if the wrists are not in this position at impact, also does this position need to be maintained on the follow through. Great video, I have seen this tip before but it did not work too well without understanding the other body movements you teach. Love the fun way you present your videos.
Hi John, I truly appreciate your kind words and I'm very glad to have you and your son enrolled in the school!! You should be able to find some good content in the school specific to achieving good impact position. Here on the channel I believe this lesson speaks to what you are asking about: ua-cam.com/video/Fe2kQ44azJ4/v-deo.html If you're still having difficulties please send me a message through the members-only Office Hours portal in the school. I always respond to inquiries posted there, whereas here in the UA-cam world my commenting availability is limited and it's hit-or-miss as to whether I will see your post. Thanks again! Tom
Hey Tom, I really appreciate your enthusiasm for the Stack and Tilt swing method. I definitely ascribe to their theory and approach, when it comes to developing consistently solid impact. I would like to recommend that you check out another teacher named Bertie Cordle, of the DST Golf channel. I believe that he is promoting an effective and streamlined approach to the Stack and Tilt principles and objectives that you would also endorse. Please check it out, and let me know what you think...? Ted 👍🙂
Hi Ted, I wish I had the time to check out the various golf instructors that folks mention to me here! Stack and Tilt is a model of the golf swing based on data from the best golf ball strikers. For this reason, someone can be doing Stack and Tilt without even knowing (or saying) that they're doing it. This is because there are basic requirements that must be met to hit a golf ball consistently on the center of the clubface with the club bottoming out in the same place every time on the ground. There are also requirements necessary to add power to the golf swing without sacrificing accuracy. Stack and Tilt determined based on a study of the best golfers of all time that they all had 3 things in common (the 3 main golf fundamentals): 1. Hit the ground in the same spot every time (consistent crispy contact) 2. Have enough power to play the golf course well (POWER) 3. Be able to have a predictable curve (accuracy). A golfer MUST be able to do those 3 things to be good at golf. Stack and Tilt is a system and a model for accomplishing these fundamentals incredibly well. The 3 fundamentals never change, so if Bertie conveys these effectively and in a body-friendly way, then I'm all for what he is doing! Cheers! Tom
Hi James - I'm all for any opportunity to properly rehearse swing motions. A towel is fine. I recommend doing it in front of a mirror if possible. Cheers! Tom
Tom, the only problem with this tip is that I got my shoulder stuck in my ear and I can't get it out! Kidding! It's really a good golf tip. Jason Dufner is one of the pro players with a Hoganesque golf swing. Or maybe I should say Sagutoesque! 😊
LOL Ed!! I just responded to another post saying that I couldn't hear him because my shoulder was stuck in my ear, and then I came across your comment. "Great" minds think alike.....😆 Yes - Dufner definitely conjures up notions of Hogan, beginning with that classic waggle! I don't think I've earned the right to have my own "esque" yet, so we'll just leave it at that! Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Tom
Hi Tom, well went and hit my first full bucket with the techniques I’ve been learning from your videos. Although It felt so awkward and I know it’s going to be hard to change my old swing thoughts the few good ones I did hit felt pure and had the little baby draw that you talk about and flew and flew. I’ll keep pounding buckets until it becomes second nature thanks and keep it up buddy.
Hi Jeff, I'm very glad to learn of your very successful initial results!! Yes - those "ghosts of swings past" are resilient and will fight you for a while, but keep working at it diligently and you'll defeat them. You've already experienced the types of shots that await you, so before you know it you'll be trading in those range buckets for buckets of extra-crispy KFC contact out on the course!! Thanks for sharing, and keep up the great work!! Tom
Hello Tom, I found your video very compelling and it makes a lot of sense. Tried practicing utilizing the stack and tilt and had some very good results. Tomorrow I will take your system to the course. My one question however is how this method differs from players who have a reverse pivot. That’s always been considered a “death move” in the golf swing. Your comments would be most appreciated. Thank you.
Hi Andrew, I know it sounds like a strange concept to those who have only ever subscribed to a swing model that is based on shifting weight from back to front, but I assure you that this swing is anything but a reverse pivot! Yours is a good question, though, because it represents an often misconstrued notion and occasional invalid criticism of the Stack & Tilt swing, and as such I always appreciate the opportunity to respond and clarify. There's no "weight shift", therefore - unless one were to fall backwards - there's nothing to reverse or pivot!! And the result is a low-maintenance, body-friendly, consistent, and tremendously powerful swing! Tom, I’m hitting the ball really well now. Ball first contact almost every time. However I’m still taking massive divots, it’s just after I hit the ball.
C J - I'm going to quote the Stack & Tilt book here regarding this specific issue: "The hands and arms are probably working correctly; you simply need to tuck the butt quicker through the strike to take some of the steepness out of the swing. The level of your belt should rise by a few good inches through impact. Releasing your hips from their downward tilt toward the ball helps to shallow the swing to prevent those steep crashes. Focus on pushing off the ground and straightening your legs as your arms stay straight through the shot." More detailed information on this this can be found in the SagutoGolf online school. Here's a link if you're not already enrolled and would like more info: saguto.golf/p/golf-swing-simplified-tom-saguto-pga Keep up the great work!! Tom

I appreciate that, Andrew!! The net structure is a DIY job. We used this video as a starting point: ua-cam.com/video/-p11qs4E2T0/v-deo.html. We then redeployed an existing net that we had (it was many years ago, but I think it was from a company that sells fishing nets) and made some other minor PVC support structure modifications to suit our needs. Hope that helps! Cheers!! Tom
Your trail arm video is still my favorite. It's the video that brought me into the land of milk and honey for sure. I don't know if it's odd, but I use my trail arm (dominant arm) to initiate my swing, not my shoulders. Shoulders are more of my checkpoint, if they're pointing at ball, I know I'm ready. Great stuff man. Always.
Thanks Johnny! As you know I do my best to convey different "feels" or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible because we're all unique physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with me may not necessarily work for you. Furthermore, a feel or thought that performs well for someone this week may run its course or get overdone and not play out so nicely next week, so it's good to have alternates to call upon if needed. The key takeaway here is that no matter the variety of suggested feels/thoughts offered for a particular element of the swing, they are all directed at getting different golfers to achieve the same desired motion or position. (It's like a multiple choice test with no wrong answer!) Cheers! Tom

Hi Tom, at about 6:40 there’s a nice shot of your swing. It looks like your head is moving backwards away from the target as you impact the ball. Jack Grout used to hold Jacks head when he practiced. Given it’s impossible to keep ones head completely still what bad things happen if one in trying to weight shift to the target on the downswing the head moves ahead of the ball before impact. Where should the head be at impact?
davidstevan1 - There is some measure of tolerance as the head reacts to the various motions of the body throughout the swing. Some minor rotational movement is expected and allowed, provided the head's position remains in the same general location from address through impact. I have a tendency (which I must work on correcting because it's over-shallowing my path) to have too much lateral hip slide in the downswing, and the brief backwards movement of my head is a compensatory reaction to this. You should just focus on maintaining your swing's center. If you achieve that you should not have to concern yourself with where your head ought to be. Thanks! Tom
Hi Tom, I’m not clear about what you mean. Do you mean to try to get right shoulder “level” with right ear on backswing and then get left shoulder level with left ear on downswing?
It's a "feel" I'm conveying to achieve desired backswing and downswing motions, Joe. Of course you're not going to get your shoulders into your ears - which is the "feel" - but it's sure going to get them working properly and tracing that circle. For my swing thought, I extend on backswing, and downswing(and follow through). Results have ben been very good. Does it have to be more complicated that that? I think the extension on downswing, gets me in the impact position. Great videos, and Merry Christmas .
It absolutely does *NOT* have to be more complicated than that, James!! In fact if you tilt and extend correctly you don't even have to think about turning because it will happen on its own. This is one of the key swing "secrets" I am trying to expose, and my mission is to get many more folks thinking that same way. Well done!! A blessed Christmas and holiday season to you and yours as well! Cheers, Tom
I like the correlation of right shoulder to right ear and left to left, to set the positions for backswing and downswing . . . However it’s somewhat confusing when you say “right shoulder in right ear.” I would suggest just saying “right shoulder behind right ear” or “right shoulder up to right ear” etc.
Just a thought to convey a feel to achieve a desired set of motions. Right shoulder to right ear gets folks properly tilting and extending, which is exactly what we are shooting for. Cheers! Tom
I appreciate that, Colin, though due to the wonders of modern technology we can still make that happen through either online lessons or swing video analyses. If you'd like you can go here to learn more: app.v1sports.com/Saguto-Golf Thanks again for your kind words and support! Tom
I'm not so sure about this one, Tom ... I find I hunch my shoulders when I try, or tilt my head (trying to get shoulder to ear) I thought you're supposed to relax your shoulders, and keep your head still 🤷🏼♂️ And what has Jason Dufner done lately? I'll give you a mulligan. Keep this stuff coming.
Hey Mike, you can think left shoulder down and that will accomplish the same as this tip. Some golfers like the feeling of right shoulder up to bring the left shoulder down. Either way, this "pulley action" of the shoulders is necessary to help the body maintain it's relationship to the golf ball throughout the swing. You might or might not need this tip for your swing. Consider this tip one that doesn't work for you but one that works well for others.
Top tip Tom, (sounds funny but it isn’t meant to 😀), sometimes I find squaring the club at impact an issue and I get the occasional few drifting to the right, not slices but going further right of the target. How would I counter that or eliminate it completely??

I am remaining centered with my forward weight load gradually increasing throughout the motion. Having said that, this system certainly allows for some transfer of pressure into the trail side during the takeaway. After all, we are moving the mass of the arms and club backwards during that initial stage of the swing. Some like to sense the dynamic pressure shifts; others prefer the feel of a gradual increasing of weight load into the lead leg from the start. However, in either scenario the key here is that we do not allow our mass - and thereby our swing center and low point - to drift back at any point. Tom PS: By the way, here's a link to my FREE mini-course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker” in case you’re interested in learning some key aspects of the swing system I teach in a more structured manner: go.saguto.golf/
Hi Tom, could you do video where you comment on extension post impact. I've been told to "keep both arms straight as long as possible" after impact until the left arm folds naturally. Your thoughts??? Thanks for considering, love your program and content!
Hey Rick, I do have a video for you that can help. If you're referring to the school, check this out - saguto.golf/courses/822925/lectures/23979679 Extension is a result of the hip slide in the downswing. Try it out! Tom
For whatever reason doing this by thinking of rotating my left shoulder down toward the ball and then my right shoulder down toward the ball seems way more natural to me. I think I'm accomplishing the same thing as the right up /back then left up/back. Or my left shoulder down toward the ball and then back/up again. Thinking of the backswing by leading with my right shoulder pulling back is what is unnatural to me.
And this, Ned, is exactly why I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. We're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. However, no matter the variety of suggested feels/thoughts offered for a particular element of the swing, they are all directed at getting different golfers to achieve the desired positions, motions, and ball striking results. This is one reason is why the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of my online school is so effective, and why so many folks across the globe are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result. The lessons and drills provide the guidelines and set the boundaries, while allowing ample leeway for each individual golfer to infuse and exercise their own uniqueness. @@SagutoGolf BTW, I tweaked the tip to "Left shoulder to right ear", works esp. well for me at taking thoughts away from the hands & arms going back. Thx for the inspiration!
@mfields310 Here's a driver video lesson that may help: ua-cam.com/video/_xl47-9p1YU/v-deo.html Oftentimes when golfers are hitting everything well except for the driver it can be attributed to one of the following: 1) They don't start with - or maintain - enough weight on the front side. In general with the driver we should add a little more front weight load at address - more like 60/40 instead of the 55/45 prescribed for the other clubs. This forward weight should gradually increase to the top of the backswing (70/30) and build further on the downswing - approximately 80/20 halfway down, 90/10 impact, and 95/5 finish. 2) Their hips are not continuing their lateral slide through impact. This is common with the driver as the wider stance means that the hips have a greater distance to travel. If the hips stop moving laterally towards the target on the downswing then their rotation takes over, changing the low point and rerouting the club. This can produce a variety of undesirable results including fat and thin contact, topped shots and popups, straight pulls, and “banana” slices. 3) They are not allowing the length of the driver to dictate the backswing path and are getting too steep as a result. The longer shaft of the driver encourages more of an around the body backswing as established by the shaft plane at address. It may "feel" flat as you take it back along the shaft plane for the first few feet, but as long as you maintain the "weight forward, shoulder down, and hands in" components while allowing the club to work around you, it should put you in the proper position at the top so you can attack the ball from the inside. Beyond that, , if you'd really like to own this swing through your entire bag please consider enrolling in the SagutoGolf online school. For just $10 US/month or $99 US/year you'll have unlimited access to a comprehensive members-only learning system for the full swing and much more. Hi Michael, Yes - Same swing with every club in your bag.... (except the putter, perhaps 😆) Just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. Cheers! Tom
Hi Robert, It’s important to understand that the videos, lessons, and drills on this free channel - while fully aligned with the swing method I teach - address a variety of topics, issues, and common flaws/fixes from one episode to the next. They are certainly not intended to be taken as a sequential learning platform like the structured curriculum of my online school, which I strongly recommend to anyone who truly wishes to get on the proper path towards learning and owning this swing. For just $10 US/month or $99 US/year you'll have unlimited access to a comprehensive members-only system for the full swing, the short game, and much more. The school's intuitive course layout greatly simplifies the entire process through succinct, step-by-step videos, and I'm constantly adding new content. This will really put you on the fast track towards learning everything in a well-organized, self-guided fashion. Here's a link if you'd like additional info: saguto.golf/p/golf-swing-simplified-tom-saguto-pga. Aside from that, I can suggest that you review the videos in my channel’s Downswing playlist as you may find a cause and cure there. Here’s the link for you: ua-cam.com/play/PLV62KxT7Mp7Jxi814RQddJx3wkHqxqhio.html Let’s get you straightened out!! Cheers! Tom
Hi Tom! Do your tips work when set up to the ball in a single plane? I do not let my arms hang down at address. I stand farther from the ball and straighten my arms so that address is the same as impact. Will your tips still work?
Hi tortelvis1! It sounds to me like you've got a Moe Norman thing going on there. While the Stack and Tilt swing I teach shares the single plane feature, it is definitely different from Moe's version and for this reason I do not recommend crisscrossing between the two methods as it would certainly lend itself to confusion. This should not be construed as a knock against Mr. Norman's renowned ball striking prowess or the style of instruction that he inspired; it's simply that components of his swing style are not compatible with S&T. So my best suggestion to anyone who is weighing these two methods is to choose one or the other, but not both! Cheers! Tom
Yep - it'll tilt your wings, fly boy. Just alternative ways of accomplishing the same thing in order to provide folks with options so they can figure out what resonates best for them. The same goes for my Arnold Palmer video on pointing the lead shoulder at the ball - that'll get you tilting as well. Different strokes for different folks so to speak. As I may have mentioned previously, the videos, lessons, and drills on this free channel - while all fully aligned with the swing method I teach - address a variety of topics, issues, feels, and common flaws/fixes from one episode to the next. And since my pea brain can get confused easily as well, I created my online school to deliver the step-by-step instruction in a language that even I can understand! Full Flaps! Tom
Except that once you take ownership of this swing, Robert, you'll find that it really is repeatable and low-maintenance! Have you considered enrolling in the SagutoGolf online school? Hi David, It is a "feel". If you keep your head in place then your trail shoulder will obviously not be able to touch the ear, but the very act of trying to do so will bring it around and behind. I do my best to convey multiple “feels” or thoughts throughout the swing wherever possible. We're all different physiologically and psychologically, and something that resonates effectively with one golfer may not necessarily work for another. As such, it is important to understand that the lessons on this channel - while fully aligned with the swing method I teach - address a variety of topics, issues, feels, and/or common flaws/fixes from one episode to the next. They are certainly not intended to be taken as a comprehensive, step-by-step, position-by-position learning platform like the structured curriculum of my online school, which I strongly recommend to anyone who truly wishes to get on the proper path towards owning this swing as it will make for a far more efficient and enjoyable learning process rather than haphazardly trying to piece things together through my UA-cam content. The lessons and drills provide the guidelines and set the boundaries, while allowing ample leeway for each individual golfer to infuse and exercise their own uniqueness. Thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result of the school, and their unsolicited testimonials tell the story quite well: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews. trying to build an indoor driving range so I can practice my swing over the winter... I have 9 foot ceilings in the basement, any suggestions Tom on a matt and net to get?
The net I have is a DIY job that should fit fine since it's approximately 7' tall and 8' wide. We used this video as a starting point: ua-cam.com/video/-p11qs4E2T0/v-deo.html. We then redeployed an existing net that we had and made some other minor PVC support structure modifications to suit our needs. Also, if you do not glue the PVC it will be easy to disassemble and reassemble should you wish to take it down for a period of time or move it from the basement to outdoors. The mat I use is a Real Feel 3' x 5'. That should serve you quite well. Hope that helps! Tom
I too put a driving range in my basement with a high ceiling and followed Tom's recommendations ... my slight modification was that when I bought my Real Feel mat, I just got the smallest piece (I think it was about 10" by 30" or so) ... this cut the investment by a lot, and then I also bought the Swing Caddie SC200 which is like the one that Tom uses. I found this invaluable feedback when I was hitting into the net. I bought my SC 200 on ebay for about $200 and use it all the time indoors or at the outdoor range. The Real Feel mat is nice also.
LOL! Yeah, I suppose the truest measure of my success in this business will be whether I'm able to teach myself out of a job because no one needs golf instruction anymore.......................😆😆😆 I hope all is well with you and Da Rona, Justin!! Tom
It wasn't my specific focus in this video, Ronald. However, if you slow down my swing you'll see that the right elbow is definitely not flying out and is in fact tucked as it should be. The Hogan drill you reference helps get you to that great delivery position. Also, it is very important to understand that the videos, lessons, and drills on this free channel - while fully aligned with the swing method I teach - address a variety of topics, issues, and common flaws/fixes from one episode to the next. My game goes to pieces when I try your "Hogan Arms tip" for some reason.Every drive is just a straight push miles right right.Today tried it on every shot ended up shooting over 100 with two 10s!! Only thing you have teached to me that doesnt work, anyone else?

Great lesson Tom. Thank you.
I use an odd approach in that I don't focus on the ball...when I do I thin em. Rather, I focus on the ground an inch or so in front of the ball. Really zone on like a blade if grass...by hitting that spot, I gather ball first, then ground. I've GOT to see the impact...keep my head down with eyes focused on that tiny target through impact, or..."see the strike!"
If I pull my head without seeing that, it's thin every...single...time. see the strike, pure gold.

Over the top guy here. I find that when I focus on using my right oblique in the down swing, it keeps my club path in the happy zone and also helps with the proper release and extension.

I’ve been trying to teach myself the game for a couple of years now and have scoured UA-cam and the internet for a simple answer to, “what should I be thinking during my swing?” Keep these lessons coming!
Hi Nick,
The short answer to your question is "nothing", or perhaps a maximum of one mechanical thought when you're out playing on the course.
In the meantime, thanks for your comment and yes - I'll definitely keep these channel lesson videos coming!!

I appreciate that, Jon, but my mission is to make "you da man" out there on the course!
Thanks for your support!
Tom
You have helped my game immensely! Played this weekend with no slices. My confidence has gone way up. Thanks!!!
Hi Kyle,
I truly appreciate your kind words and I am very glad the instruction on my channel has benefited your game!!

That's fantastic, David!! I'm very glad to know that this lesson video finally delivered your "AHA!" moment!!!!
Thanks for sharing, and Bombs Away!!!

I'm very glad to have you onboard, Kip, and I look for to helping you gain that crispy edge!!!
Cheers!
Tom
Tom, your videos are the best! Thanks!
Thanks Rickey - I sincerely appreciate that!!
Tom
I tried to think of a different way to present this lesson…but I couldn’t. You nailed ! Just like you always do. OH, and the guitar thing. Turns out quite a few tour players are music lovers like Peter Jacobson. He had a band called Jake Trout and the flounders. Peter played guitar. Payne Stewart and Mark lye sang. Can’t remember others. They have two albums still available.😊
Thanks again for your kind words and support, H Byrd!!
Yes - Jake has got some great material! John Daly has been known to appear on stage as well. I'm sure there are many others.
Cheers!

Sounds great and simple will try tomorrow
Great! I hope this little nugget from Jason Dufner works well for you, Brian!
Thanks Tom! Another gem to keep it crispy and fun!
Thanks David - I'm glad this episode resonated well with you!!

I had a funky inconsistent swing, your videos have helped me simplify the swing and get more consistent. Your messaging is simple and easy to relate to, for me anyways. Thanks.
Hi Steve,
I truly appreciate your kind words and I am very glad the instruction on my channel has benefited your game!!

I really enjoyed your recent golf boot camp video, learned a lot from it without being there though it would have been great,
Been watching saguto all winter up here in canada. Just had a game breaking 1st range session Of the year, yahoo thanks TOM. I had hogan and hips in my head today

Best tip on the net. Thanks Tom you rock🤙🤙
Thanks - I'm glad you enjoyed this episode and the Jason Dufner tip!!
@@SagutoGolf other ways to feel a turn is to get your left chest down to your right knee/right instep.Right shoulder behind your head , Right hip back and higher than your left hip,Tailbone to left instep.
Yes, those are all good feels. "Tailbone to Target" is a great move that I teach, as shown in this episode: ua-cam.com/video/GYRCd7WMoSI/v-deo.html
The cat taking a dump is priceless.
That makes so much sense. I love swing thoughts. Can't wait to try it!
Thank you golf Sensei! I always look forward to hit the range after your videos.
Glad you enjoyed it, Terrance!!
Thanks for your continued support, and keep it crispy!!

Hi Garry,
I truly appreciate your kind words and I am very glad the instruction in the online school and here on my channel has benefited your swing - and your resulting enjoyment of this great game - to such an extent!! But let's be clear - your embracing the process and putting in the necessary time and effort are what have transformed your golf swing!! All I did was provide you with a road map to get there!!

Stack and tilt is an absolute game changer.
It sure was for me, Colin!! I'm glad to have you onboard!!
Tom
Tom
This is a great swing thought ! forget about P1-P9 simples great lesson!
Hi Tom, used your tip without even going to the range, I’m73, shot a 91, maybe I got lucky,
But I was hitting the ball better, not one fat or thin shot, on the green putting for par many times, Thanks. Ron
Thanks again TOM great tips 84 year old still working to shoot my age.

I truly appreciate your kind words and I am very glad the instruction on my channel has benefited your game!! I hope this most recent lesson helps you to overcome that occasional flattening issue.
Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work!!

Your channel is a rare 💎! Any chance to address reverse pivot or prevent falling back during down swing?
The cat taking a shit at 1:20 really made the video for me. Been playing like a champ ever since seeing that.
Hi John,
I truly appreciate your kind words and I'm very glad to have you and your son enrolled in the school!! You should be able to find some good content in the school specific to achieving good impact position. Here on the channel I believe this lesson speaks to what you are asking about: ua-cam.com/video/Fe2kQ44azJ4/v-deo.html
If you're still having difficulties please send me a message through the members-only Office Hours portal in the school. I always respond to inquiries posted there, whereas here in the UA-cam world my commenting availability is limited and it's hit-or-miss as to whether I will see your post.

Thanks Greg - I'm glad you enjoyed it!!

Hey Tom,
I really appreciate your enthusiasm for the Stack and Tilt swing method.
Ted 👍🙂
Hi Ted,
I wish I had the time to check out the various golf instructors that folks mention to me here!
Cheers!
Tom
Tom, I love your videos. Teach is to work the ball, and how do you feel about using a towel to practice swing in the house? Thanks buddy.
"Great" minds think alike.....😆
Yes - Dufner definitely conjures up notions of Hogan, beginning with that classic waggle!
Hi Jeff,
I'm very glad to learn of your very successful initial results!!
Tom
Hello Tom,
I found your video very compelling and it makes a lot of sense. Tried practicing utilizing the stack and tilt and had some very good results. Tomorrow I will take your system to the course. My one question however is how this method differs from players who have a reverse pivot. That’s always been considered a “death move” in the golf swing. Your comments would be most appreciated. Thank you.
Hi Andrew,
I know it sounds like a strange concept to those who have only ever subscribed to a swing model that is based on shifting weight from back to front, but I assure you that this swing is anything but a reverse pivot! War Eagle! Dufner!
Tom, I’m hitting the ball really well now. Ball first contact almost every time. However I’m still taking massive divots, it’s just after I hit the ball.
C J - I'm going to quote the Stack & Tilt book here regarding this specific issue:
"The hands and arms are probably working correctly; you simply need to tuck the butt quicker through the strike to take some of the steepness out of the swing. The level of your belt should rise by a few good inches through impact. Releasing your hips from their downward tilt toward the ball helps to shallow the swing to prevent those steep crashes. Focus on pushing off the ground and straightening your legs as your arms stay straight through the shot."

These short lessons are gold. What is the brand of net you use it looks solid ?
I appreciate that, Andrew!!
The net structure is a DIY job. We used this video as a starting point: ua-cam.com/video/-p11qs4E2T0/v-deo.html. We then redeployed an existing net that we had (it was many years ago, but I think it was from a company that sells fishing nets) and made some other minor PVC support structure modifications to suit our needs.
Hope that helps!

(It's like a multiple choice test with no wrong answer!)

It is important to understand that the videos, lessons, and drills on this free channel - while fully aligned with the swing method I teach - address a variety of topics, issues, feels, and common flaws/fixes from one episode to the next. that old ladys swing at the beginning was hilarious...
Yet somehow she was still able to hit the ball! 😆😆
Cheers,
Tom
I like the correlation of right shoulder to right ear and left to left, to set the positions for backswing and downswing . . . However it’s somewhat confusing when you say “right shoulder in right ear.” I would suggest just saying “right shoulder behind right ear” or “right shoulder up to right ear” etc.
Just a thought to convey a feel to achieve a desired set of motions. Right shoulder to right ear gets folks properly tilting and extending, which is exactly what we are shooting for.
Cheers!

I'm not so sure about this one, Tom
... I find I hunch my shoulders when I try, or tilt my head (trying to get shoulder to ear)
I thought you're supposed to relax your shoulders, and keep your head still 🤷🏼♂️
And what has Jason Dufner done lately?
I'll give you a mulligan. Keep this stuff coming.
Hey Mike, you can think left shoulder down and that will accomplish the same as this tip. Some golfers like the feeling of right shoulder up to bring the left shoulder down. Either way, this "pulley action" of the shoulders is necessary to help the body maintain it's relationship to the golf ball throughout the swing.
You might or might not need this tip for your swing. Consider this tip one that doesn't work for you but one that works well for others.
SagutoGolf
Absolutely!
... its working for me!

Top tip Tom, (sounds funny but it isn’t meant to 😀), sometimes I find squaring the club at impact an issue and I get the occasional few drifting to the right, not slices but going further right of the target. How would I counter that or eliminate it completely??

Ear ear!!!👍😉
LOL!! YES!!!!
Is there an increase in pressure on your back foot when you do that or do you try to be more central?
I am remaining centered with my forward weight load gradually increasing throughout the motion. Having said that, this system certainly allows for some transfer of pressure into the trail side during the takeaway. After all, we are moving the mass of the arms and club backwards during that initial stage of the swing. Some like to sense the dynamic pressure shifts; others prefer the feel of a gradual increasing of weight load into the lead leg from the start. However, in either scenario the key here is that we do not allow our mass - and thereby our swing center and low point - to drift back at any point.

Hi Tom, could you do video where you comment on extension post impact. I've been told to "keep both arms straight as long as possible" after impact until the left arm folds naturally. Your thoughts??? Thanks for considering, love your program and content!

@@SagutoGolf All paid up! Just have to get there
LOL what was that swing that lady had that just made me die laughing
@mfields310
Here's a driver video lesson that may help: ua-cam.com/video/_xl47-9p1YU/v-deo.html
Oftentimes when golfers are hitting everything well except for the driver it can be attributed to one of the following:
1) They don't start with - or maintain - enough weight on the front side.

Quick question is this recommended for all clubs or just the irons?
Hi Michael,
Yes - Same swing with every club in your bag.... (except the putter, perhaps 😆) Just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods.

Cheers!
Tom
Tom I'm loving the new kicks but that white belt has got to go!

Tom,
Does this tip accomplish the same swing as the "airplane wing" tilt video? Trying not to confuse my pea brain. Thanks.
Right shoulder into right ear?? I’m a little confused by the analogy to be honest. Right shoulder around and behind the right ear??
Hi David,

trying to build an indoor driving range so I can practice my swing over the winter...
