As a designer, art director, illustrator, and sculptor, for the last 3 decades, the thought I would give you or anyone caught up in this notion of style, would be this.
Your style will naturally appear out of the things you like to create, who or what you take personal inspiration from, and ultimately what you enjoy creating and representing.
Your hand, your eye, your voice, your movement, will always be uniquely your own, and the more you play in any given medium the more your style will begin to solidify.
Try to relax into what you enjoy doing. If you're just starting out and don't have tons of experience, then play, experiment, copy, analyze, find what you love doing, and do that. You'll find your groove, and with it, your style will grow out of it.
And lastly...your style will never stop evolving. There is rarely an end point in your creative journey. You may fund your creativity with one particular look or genre, but you will always find yourself being inspired by new things outside of it. And those things, if they carry enough weight with your creative spirit, will find their way into your art, and style. It's the beauty of creation.
So relax. Play. Be curious. Keep an open mind, a watchful eye, and open ear, do what fills you with inspiration, and just create. Never stop creating.

I personally think the best way to handle the "Oh I don't have a style"/ "What even is my style?," phase is to not worry about it at all... I feel if one focus on worrying about it rather than just drawing would ultimately make themselves feel discouraged to the point where they just stop drawing. At the end of the day your art style will emerge someway somehow. You already have your own unique art style but it's probably not what you envisioned, maybe because you could be lacking the proper practice, or you're just not patience . I noticed that other artists that talks about this topic sort of beats around the bush about it because really the solution to this problem is not that complicated to figure out.
(This may be a bit harsh for some, but the point here that I'm trying to make is to well...not allow yourself to make up excuses to not draw I guess. Because really all this topic really is, is one huge excuse.)

Love you Josh, keep up the good work boiiiii!

I somewhat disagree, I think the best answer to the statement “I don’t have an art style” is “Yes you do”
Using my definition of art style (the way you unconsciously/mindless draw), Everyone from “never drawn in my life” to “I have 50 years of experience” has an art style. The people who say “I don’t have an art style” are actually saying “I don’t have a _unique/original_ art style”. These people want their art style to stand out from the others but like you said, they don’t have the practice/experience to achieve this unique style. So they become unmotivated and avoid art.
What I’m trying to say is, instead of telling the “I don’t have an art style” people not to worry about it you should telling them that they do in fact have an art style but that they should keep practicing more to achieve a “better” or more original art style. I rest my case also sorry for the long comment

Listening to really talented artists being positive and telling people to not give up always makes me want to cry. It's something I really need to hear, I think, but I get really sad everytime I remember I can't gather the motivation to plug in my expensive ass tablet I got for my birthday and practice. It's like I'm being left behind and I just feel like a complete disappointment.
I really wonder how people can get up their butt and start doing what they want to do, instead of binge watching really talented people online at 3AM, being inspired and wanting to draw, but spending all their time eating pizza and being an overall waste of space and money.

Personally, what has helped me discover my art style (which is still super brand new) is trial-and-error. There was a phase where I tried different styles - lines, colors, subject, composition. There were some moments that I felt really stressed and disappointed because I had so many artists I looked up to and I just couldn't reach that level. But when I stepped back and took a look at my entire portfolio, I narrowed down what I like to draw, especially what makes me sigh in relief when I step back to look at the finished piece. And I decided, what the hell, it doesn't hurt to follow what I like to do. So, I would highly encourage anybody looking for their style to experiment with different styles and finding what you like to do.

so, two weeks ago I decided that I wanted to draw again, after almost 15 years without the king about it as a daily activity. And the more I listen to people who has experience with that, the more I realize that all I need to do is practice and develop my skills without comparing to other people who are already experienced. And then, my style will come to me once I find out what I like to do, what I enjoy to do and can do best.

some of the best advice i was given was to stop worrying so much about getting it right, and start trying to make it good. This is why I usually start my work from imagination and once i hit a wall i bring in the references. This really helps me bring my own style to my work because the reference is just to make minor tweaks to things that can be improved not dictate the actual look and feel of the image.

Finding one's own unique art style takes time. Possibly years.
It took 15-ish years for me to finally discover my art style. And I didn't realize it for a good while.
Once I discovered I had a unique art style, I ignored it. Because if I tried to stick to it, my art would suffer. I would focus on my style and less on the art. I foolishly didn't realise my art style was a natural outcome of my drawing.
Sadly, my job and life duties have taken away my time for art. I've not drawn much in the last 5 yrs. And I've list my unique style. And I find myself having to relearn how to draw. I may get my style back one day. But, again, it's going to take time. And it will have to come naturally.
I've upload some of my old art onto both ArtStation and Instagram. Comparing them to my recent art, you can see my skills have suffered.

my art style happened accidentally: i was drawing abstract line art with themes of cynicism and pop art. i work as a graphic designer, so then for this year i thought of creating album artworks inspired by my fave records from this year.
long story short, i discovered that i love doing glowy, retro, futuristic illustrations that’s heavily-inspired by music (that’s why i do them in squares). it’s cute, funky, that carries dark undertones. soft opacity brushes changed my life lol. and then add grain for a vintage look ✨

This was so well put and interesting to me, especially in the ways that I relate and also how the difference in age (I’m about 7 years older than you I think).
Growing up in a time when the internet was very much in its infancy, the messaging on how to become a better artist was a bit more muddied and vague. I remember being gifted a book on Bridgman as a kid which I never read but would occasionally look at. Manga got me into western comics, which got me into illustration and ‘fine art’.
I think I can see a style that I have developed, but I don’t think I consciously chose it, and I don’t think it emerged until after I started drawing from life with pens for a long long time. Some time in my teens I got this idea that it was the only way to get better, and I took it seriously lol. I think what happens is that we all have some unique mannerisms which begin to show up once our dexterity has developed to a point that the act of controlling a drawing instrument is something we’re no longer thinking about so much.
I think that depending on our exposure and our preferences, we adopt little tricks we see our hero’s employ, often without knowing why, and with time and practice they become a part of our visual mannerisms, and often we shed a lot of that kind of stuff, and retain maybe 10% of it, and learn when to used it intuitively. However, when I have tried to use these little tricks as cheats to bypass a skill I didn’t understand, my work would suffer, and look like an embarrassing version of whichever artist I was attempting to emulate.
I also feel like style is not something I concern myself with too much anymore as I view it as the organic and ever changing result of experience, and if I focus too much on it, I loose some of that uniquely individual aspect of myself because I am trying to separate and contain the ‘style’, for what would probably boil down to shallow purposes like making money!
I think my main take so far in my journey is to learn to enjoy drawing, don’t shy away from challenges, but also to be level headed about certain fundamentals. Perspective or anatomy will never be learned in a manner of hours, so I go back to it when I find myself running into a wall with those skills.
Anyway love your podcast-keep up the great work, your insight is awesome!

I get pushed into visual design out of economic necessity for releasing music as often what is an honest, albeit meager budget to have a work commissioned is just out of my ability to pay. I came here through your 6 ways people care about your art video and dug the perspective.
I've always either had a work we wanted to use for a cover already, or I do the photo+text thing. There''s a beautiful intentionality to putting a line on a page. And yes, there's definitely a unique style but I'm not educated enough in visual arts to describe it in english.

I write poetry that is inspired by my experiences in life and music people have told me that it makes them feel a certain way. I am learning how to draw different things from disney, flowers learning how to draw faces and parts of the body I have done a few portraits starting out, and animals. My initial staying would be animated but I like realistic art the textures colors and detail are things I'd like to learn

i feel like, maybe the style is
your good habits + your bad habits
i tried find my style for long time, now i just gave up,
just draw any styles i want. even remix them sometimes.
cuz i struggle in it for too long, and i still can't pick one to be my style.
kind of tired. now i just accept that "im greedy"
in here some ppl say this ↓ when they can't choose things:
"only children have to choose, i want it all. *make a fist*"
    小孩子才做選擇,我全都要(握拳)😂😂
thank you for sharing, helpful, and i love your voice, so peaceful (-ω-)💕

I honestly didn't know I had a style until people started saying "I like your style" LOL.
If I noticed something about other artist style is that they took it from someone else's style that they like or inspired them and made it their own by adding their imagination to it. This could have been done without them knowing or remembering that is where it came from. I'm not saying you should copy a style but it is good to try an mimic other work to understand how it works. I know plenty of professionals that got their style from just drawing fan-art or comic book art that they loved growing up.
Best advice I overheard from a teacher in art school, "Don't worry about having a f**king style! Just learn how to draw first."

This piece is CRAZY dude! LOVE IT! I love drawing faces and the like...my biggest downfall though is getting proportions and details spot on. I love the feature with ipad pro where the ref pic can be on the side of the procreate screen and I'm able to zoom in and get perfect details BUT when I zoom out, to look at the full face....it's not EXACT. I totally understand how shadows and highlights affect the structure of a face....Can you point me to a place to start with getting these things right please?

I mostly draw portraits and like drawing it as well but I feel like oh thas not a style I should be focusing on characters and such blah blah
And when I start doing it I hate my drawing and get burnt out easily!
But I also feel like I should draw characters other wise I won't improve! It's really frustrating. This video really be opening my eyes that drawing potraits is also a style and how one draws it 💀💀

I've only been doing realistic portraits and damn I'm pretty proud of them. But then I realized... how am I supposed to differentiate myself? (especially since you can't really differentiate one realistic artist from another). i've been considering stepping away from realism and trying something else (surrealism maybe), but I'm not entirely sure. Still need to figure it out :(

funny that you say a 4 year old cant have a style: I work in a kindergarten and i have one child with what i would call a very distinct style. I love watching her draw because the way she does it is she will draw something and then create a story around it by drawing a new thing on top of it. For example, she will draw her friends and then decide, theyre gonna fall into a tub of paint now, so shell draw on top of their faces. Or shell draw a swimming pool and then cut the edges off "so the men can jump in" :D

I have a hard time with proportions unless I directly trace or use a photo reference, I’m good at small details and I’m surprisingly good at clothes, I can draw semi realistic eyes, mouths and noses individually but when I try to put them together the proportions become skewed. I cant draw headshapes for the life of me either. When I use references I have a hard time drawing anything different or changing anything, does anyone have an advice for how I can get around this and improve all around?

*actually, in this video you do separate the reference layer from the "final" one. But in the others ones i see u using the same (or at least it seems like it)

    • @ergojosh
      @ergojosh  4 роки тому +1

Its something that will grow with experience. For drawing I only use one layer unless I have something like a hand that covers important features, then I will put that on its own layer. Otherwise for finished paintings, I use seperate layers for light/shadow/color/foreground/background/ and even midground. If the painting is complex, I will even break individual parts into their own light/shadow layers as well.
