Hey Josh- after deciding to finally learn shading faces and move beyond 2d cartoon sketches, I chose this video as a guide and quite frankly I’m amazed at how things started to click into place. it’s far from polished but a huge huge step forward. The “John Madden” overlays (pink and green diagrams) of the shadows and lighted areas were extremely helpful. I greatly appreciate the wealth of knowledge you’ve shared-thank you!
If You are beginner don't spend your precious time on such movies. Just draw. ON PAPER. as big as You can. 100x70cm? Yes. Members of Your family, guy, from tv news on screen./fast sketching/ observe people, animals. everything. Observation is a key to success in drawing and practice. On YT there is a lot of harmful tutorial about drawing. Unfortunately tablets and drawing apps gives You unlimited option but also spoil your mind.
@@msStoDwa It doesn't really matter whether you start digitally or traditionally, the only difference is that, as you stated, you have unilmited acess to alot more. Its just a different medium and shouldn't stump your growth. There's not one way to begin doing art and you shouldn't tell people otherwise.
I’d consider myself a very well rounded artist when I comes to pencil and paper. Unfortunately it becomes cumbersome these days to motivate myself to pull out the sketchbook and the case carrying my various mechanical pencils. I’ve since purchased and am now awaiting my 12.9 iPad Pro, which would provide much easier access to everything with two simple items. I’ve loved digital art since childhood, even dabbled a lot with photoshop; however, I know the experience will be enhanced ten fold on my new setup. I mention all that to say, while waiting for my investment to find its way to my house, I’ve been binge watching your videos to watch a professional digital artist at work. You’ve inspired me to dig deeper into realistic works, and even more so colorful work, as I tend to lean more towards simple graphite shading. Thank you, you’ve earned yourself a new subscriber and I look forward to more work, and more importantly more knowledge. ✊🏾
I’ve been scouring the Internet for a useful coloring/shading tutorial, and this is the first one that has genuinely helped me. I’ve been looking through your other videos too, and they’re equally helpful. Thank you for everything you do!
I just have to say-I’ve drawn a long time. I’ve simplified and I’ve gone waaaayyy too extreme. I’ve watched videos. I’ve drawn by hand and on tablet. But the way you just explained this, it really resonated with me! I love your layout, love your voice, love your art. Amazing! Thank you so much.
I've studied at SVA NY, Art students league NY and read countless art books and watch a lot of youtube tutorials..been around the block... You really have a great way about teaching and are a very talented artist.. very impressed.. BRAVO....
So glad to see you’re recording beyond the sketch phase now!!! I really appreciate hearing your art theory that you’re developing 😊 congrats on achieving your desired sketch skill level!!!
I have aphantasia and honestly breaking it down like this makes it so much easier for me to understand lighting and shading and I might start doing this Mapping for every piece. I love this. Thank you so much!!
Hey Josh! I just want to say that your videos are so insightful and in-depth. When I just want to sit down and chill i get out my paints and draw while watching your videos. Lol, your voice is very nice.
I am incredibly happy that I've found you!! Finally taking the plunge to more digital illustration and your channel has been phenomenal, and is SUPREMELY underrated!
Even though I'm just starring to sketch on normal sketch books, this tutorial helps alot... Also the way he explains it so calmly, it's like he is really here with me... Thankyou so much for such awesome video!
Probably one of the best tutorials, this is incredible how is not a super speed so we can still see how you do it ♥️ thank you, I’m a beginner and this is extremely helpful for me, THANK YOU 🖼 🎨😍
you are so very good at explaining things, and making things clearer. I just discovered that I kind of naturally do this type of shading already when doing digital portraits, however I just never knew how to do it technically, and neatly, I just tried to pick up what i learnt from timelapse drawings on the internet and practice myself. I've been out of practice of drawing for so long though that I feel I can't do it anymore, especially in procreate but your videos are helping me gain that bit of confidence again thank you
Can u do an in depth tutorial about the shapes u draw to sketch out a face to achieve symmetry for beginners? The way u explain makes everything easier to understand and there r no other tutorials in UA-cam who have done it. Plssss :(
I can't believe I've never thought of it like this! It's so helpful to think about the geometric shapes as opposed to getting hung up on the soft shapes. Thank You!
I just started digital art and though I'm familiar with traditional art and shading this helped so much, I feel like this really helps to bring my art to a higher level thank you!
This was really insightful! I’ve always just went with the flow with my shading & changed queue when problems arose. But I really liked your easy approach to shapes and shading!!! Thank you ☺️
This is literally EXACTLY what I needed!! Especially learning about the planes of the face. It would be sooo great u could make a video explaining how to shade the face with colors :) Anyway, AMAZING video!!
Fun tip, if you just use a flat tone like beige or brown, then apply exactly what he does with gray and white, you'll be 90% there. Add some highlights in the transition areas (yellows, browns, or even pinks) and you'll have a great piece.
Thank you! I’m a watercolor portrait painter, but your explanation of the planes of the face as well as areas of highlight and shadow are very helpful. I do have an iPad Pro, so maybe I’ll take a crack at a digital portrait!
Hi! I purchased your brushes Last night in support and in hopes that I learn how to get better with my art. I want to thank you for your tutorials and I hope wen I get good at art I can help teach others too❤️❤️❤️
I do wish you would os slowed down on the layers and shading or just explain the layer process. Whether you used multiply and what brushes etc.. but again thank you!
that was helpful indeed, to understand the form of head. i was thinking it would cover shading with color. it's mono chromatic shading. could you please make one where you explain where the hue is changing and how the saturation is changing just as beautifully as you explained in this video?
This was awesome to watch, you explain things very well. I tried to click on the link for your brushes but it said the page doesn’t exist anymore. Is there anywhere I can get those portrait brushes you have ? Thank you
Hi. I've been watching you for some time now but idk i just came across this video so late lol. Just want to thank you for this tutorial. I tried to keep up but unfortunately my finger doesn't support 3d touch and my iphone 6 make my lines pixelated that much lol. More power to you sir!
I love how this is lowkey a makeup/contour tutorial
he must be good at makeup then lol
Accidental makeup tutorial
Personally, I found My art has gotten a lot better with improving my makeup skills over time. so i feel this!
I usually watch makeup tutorial for coloring my drawing😂
There’s a lot of the same principles lmao it’s really cool

I just started digital art and though I'm familiar with traditional art and shading this helped so much, I feel like this really helps to bring my art to a higher level thank you!
The blue color background and the hot pink lines... these color combos remind me so much of the color palette in Paper Girls.
You are unbelievably talented and I love the way you teach! I am watching all of your videos!!! Great teacher absolutely! Thank you for all you do!
This was really insightful! I’ve always just went with the flow with my shading & changed queue when problems arose. But I really liked your easy approach to shapes and shading!!! Thank you ☺️

Thank you so much, I’m just getting into digital art and the shading part is difficult. This makes it easier for me to understand 👌🏾
Thank you! I’m a watercolor portrait painter, but your explanation of the planes of the face as well as areas of highlight and shadow are very helpful. I do have an iPad Pro, so maybe I’ll take a crack at a digital portrait!
