I work at a ski shop and there’s a few things I would mention. as for filling in gouges in the base I would probably take it to a shop in general. at my shop we have a machine that makes it a lot easier to pack the base filler into the gouge and after it sits we have another machine that completely grinds the bases flat and planes the board. as for Waxing, he used a shit ton of wax lmao. you only need enough to cover the bottom, it doesn’t have to be a thick layer. I would just do sections at a time and try to spread the wax down the board as you go, it’ll save you money on wax too. Also big important part, don’t make circles with the iron!!! the iron gets scratched on the edge of your board over time and those scratches can scratch the base of your board pretty bad. just go back and forth in a line and don’t go sideways at all, especially don’t make circles. that part definitely made me cringe a bit. good luck to those that are watching this video in 2021
SnowboardProCamp Heavenly for the trees, for sure! And its beautiful scenery. Northstar is a little smaller but is good for park. Mount Rose gets great snow with a base of 8000 feet or about 2500 meters for you guys.
I'm so glad you're not like those other people who tell their life story before actually getting to the main point. Thanks for the how to! Keep up the great work
I appreciated the little side story. I really appreciate trick tutorials you upload too. After those videos I find snowboarding much more enjoyable. Thanks for those too!
I live in England so there is never any snow. So I've learned to snowboard on dry slope which people have told me is harder. But in a couple weeks I'm going to France to snowboard and I'm sooooo exited, I want to put all the tips you've given me to the test. Thanks kev
Ellis 04 top tip get saving for next year because once you've been once you'll be itching to go again the year after! im in italy in 2 weeks cant wait!
Thanks for all your tips and advice man! You've made me so much more confident at snowboarding, and more importantly more confident with handling my gear. This season I have bought the Burton Custom 2017, and with your great video's I am stoaked that it will be in great care. (From NZ, our season doesn't start until another 4 months)
Had a very smart considerate outstanding citizen of a snowboard rider respectfully hit a box immediately behind me at a faster pace than me then proceed to clip my board with his amazing control and skills. After tightening up my bindings that were both loosened i am now here for the damage he did. Idk how they didn’t kick him out since he and his friends would cut the entire lift line every single time they came down.
When I melt the ptex I use the straight edge immediately while it's still hot to press it in. I've noticed when I didn't do this the ptex pops out after a few days.
You could have/should brush the board down with a medium ish nylon brush after scraping. Also, you could have left the wax on if this is just your back up board and just scrape (and brush) it the night before you're going to use it. Adding to that I like to cake my boards at the end of the season and store them with wax on.. That way the pores in the base are always saturated in wax and don't have a chance of drying out during the off season. When winter swings around again I just briefly run the iron over the wax to lightly reheat the wax.. Wait 10-15 minutes and scrape. Nice ptex job though!
Hey Kevin, if you don't want any back residue left in the repair spot you should make sure not to get any yellow flame and if you see the black stuff start to drip just move your ptex to another part of the base so that it doesn't get stuck in the base
If you plan to wax and repair your own board, I would recommend investing in a ski/snowboard combo vise set. They easily clamp onto a desk or table, and will make your life a whole lot easier. You don't even have to take your bindings off! A decent set costs around $100.
+TGHstudio I use a hard nylon brush from Stage. makes a big difference in my opinion. check Amazon there's a ton of options. Stage was one of the cheapest with good reviews and I definitely don't have any complaints.
I always finish with brushing with a medium then soft ski-skateboard brush in diagonal pattern which helps to increase friction or slide on the snow, keep up the vids!
I have been a ski servicer since I was 15. And the waxing in the video was greatly done. But filling that big of a hole yourself with ptex I wouldn't recommend. Fixing small holes yourself with ptex is approvable. But if you have a big hole just take your board/skis to the pros. They will put a strip of the same material that the base was made from and glue it in. It is basically permanent and the ptex will fall out within a few days. Don't be scared to take your board/skis to the pros because you thunk they will judge you. They won't, it is all a part of their job.
One thing i do is after scraping the wax off i take a brush and buff the whole thing from tip to tail always brushing length ways. This decreases surface tension and makes it even faster.
One thing i like to do is to heat up all board with the iron and the wax at an higher temperature without being too hot. you have to feel the warmness through the board if you are touching on the other side and just feel it hot And just go from the nose to the tail. Leave the board overnight in a warm place (I leave it in my bathroom) then the next day the board should have absorbed most of the wax. Scrap it and use a brush to finish the job !
Thanks for this video! I moved to CO three years ago, learned how to diy my board maintenance. Definitely learned a few more (needed) steps here--esp ptex stuff. I've learned so much from your vids! After around 175 days on the snow, I don't look like such a noob out there. Before discovering your videos, I watched a LOT of shitty ones. I practice something new whenever I ride. Probably not many women in their 50's happily buttering down on a pow day :-) You are doing an awesome job, thank you. ..... back to trying to eek out a few more days...
Hey Kevin i noticed that the damage hit the core.. Am I right? You don't have to use any type of Glou first, so reduse the danger of getting the core wet inside of the board? And how often u tune your edges?
Hi! I need an advice.. Used snowboard with nose and tail guards(good price deal DC snowboard). Should I buy this snowboard, take off these guards and repair holes or not buy it? Or maybe buy it ant leave these guards on? Thanks
I just started snowboarding this season and your videos have been extremely helpful, thank you! I have a question, me and my sister bought new boards after using rented ones for the past few months, and I'm fine with mine but it's way to fast for my little sis. She was wondering if there was a way to slow it down. Is there a special "slow down wax" or would it be safe to just take some fine sand paper and lightly scuff the surface, thoughts? Thanks again!
Is there a suggested online store that you have for any snowboarding gear? I don't have a store near me that sells any snowboarding since I live in an area that doesn't have any ski/snowboarding mountains and doesn't get a lot of snow.
Zac Carter being from Seattle we are fortunate to have an abundant number of ski/snowboard companies. The largest online dealer in the North West is Evo.com. They have a great selection of all things snowboarding, skating and surfing!
+Zac Carter a few that I've checked out are Evo, Backcountry and the House. I put affiliate links in the description of most videos if you need any gear!
Man, if every tutorial was as good as yours they'd BE YOU. Thanks for simplifying the process for a complete beginner, gives me the knowledge, and more importantly, CONFIDENCE, to do it myself. Thanks bro! 👍
I have a basic easy question.ive been skiing from age 12 I picked up snowboarding 4years ago I'm 39 now.but I really enjoyed making the switch.i want too know what should I set my iron at for all temp wax hydrocarbon.ive got different heat range from people.my girl and me also watch all your, videos.best on UA-cam and online.your beginner videos really help my girl get going as this is her first year boarding.thank you
Johnny Yakoobian look up your wax on the internet it should give the recommended temperature for the iron in both Celsius and Fahrenheit. Sometimes the wax package comes with a slip of paper that's lists it also
Shayna Chimovitz if you do a correct hand wax I usually recommend waxing your board every 4-7 trips to the mountain; this depends on the length of time you spend out on the hill each trip. Edges have more variability. If you intend to ride on boxes and rails, many people recommend you have less sharp edges due to the chance of them catching on the features. If you prefer to cruise the groomers on your mountain trips, visit your local repair technician to have your edges tested. Hope this helps!
thanks for the instructions, very helpful. Curious though- Just how much does it matter to repair every gouge and nick in your board? Does it really, truly effect speed? It does not seem to matter and I guess I could make a fair comparison myself but, with you having much more experience than me, wonder if you have actually compared the difference? I would guess speed would be the only factor? thank you from Arizona
Paul No! Ptex does not stick to fiberglass, you will need base weld. Honestly though, have a professional technician fix these kinds of damages. All this guy is doing is making it worse
If done correctly, the PTEX should have no soot in it(Black burns). The Blue flame prevents this, and orange creates it. Burn off the soot before you apply, it looks cleaner, and bonds a lot better.
Pure Vybz spray wax is good in a pinch cause it only lasts a few runs. If you want a wax that will last at least a couple good hard days of boarding use this method. It's called "hot waxing".
So when I apply p-tex, it always cracks out in to pieces when scraping off, any tips on preventing that? I clean the hole, rough it with sand paper or metal brush, but it still keeps poping out when i let it cool and scrape it....
Arnas K. Hey to help prevent that from happening drip the p-tex one layer at a time and let cure for 20 min before applying next layer. its a longer process but its worth it. hope that works for you.
Jumper? You mean Jacket? If you don't have a snowboard jacket just wear a winter coat that isn't excessively heavy. If you have time to order a jacket look at a snowboard site that ships to wherever you are. If you are in the USA or CA I suggest www.the-house.com/jacket-pkgs.html snowboarding jackets are good at keeping heat in but you can also let it out because you are going to warm up quickly. Whatever keeps you dry is what is going to keep you having fun.
i heard its best to not cause if the board gets too hot it can warp with the extra pressure from the bindings being attached but thats if u do a bad job waxing with the iron...
P-Tex is actual base material. It's basically the only thing to use for minor base repair, until you get into deeper stuff where the core is heavily exposed, in which case you might want to take it to a shop where they can do what's called a base weld, which is mixture of epoxy and base material which is melted with a special gun into the base.
Hey man, how crazy do you get about making sure there is no unabsorbed wax left on your base? Sometimes I spend a 1/2 hour+ with the scraper and I don't know if I'm just being too critical.
you can use a hot glue gun to melt/apply the petex with a little more precision, just fyi. Best to use a new one tho so theres no risk of contaminating with glue residue
This season just ended for me. I have been skiing since i was 9 and now im 12. I found your videos, and they are very interesting. I only go skiing 4 or 5 days a year. If i try snowboarding, what would you say i should try learn in order to get interested in snowboarding? Can learn "the basics" in only 4 or 5 days? Btw nice video and the videos with your girlfriend improving are also very entertaining. Sorry for my bad english, and i hope to get an answer :)
aren't you supposed to remove the bindings from the snowboard when you use the iron? i hear that the heat from the iron can warp the base if the screws from the bindings are let in
Bruh Sweet as a trained and certified ski tech I have never heard of this happening. I would say it might not be a great idea to put bindings on or try to tighten them immediately after waxing your board, since the material has softened up. Other than that, you should be just fine. Hope this helps!
okay cool. thanks man. i have just heard of this happening and have never actually seen evidence. it'll be nice to wax my board without having to redo my stance everytime
I just saw yesterdays video where you bought new shoes, board and bindings. I noticed that the board was a bit small compared to you. Was it because of the way you hold it, or do I use a wrong size measurement (not sure I used the good word ;)). I thought that it should be between shoulders and chin. I just bought my own board and I am a bit insecure about the length. It's 151 cm, I am 170. Could you maybe help me with this, thanks ;D.
Janne There is a lot that goes into board size. It is not just about height and weight, but also your riding style/goals and local conditions. If you plan on spending your trips on the groomed runs you have a huge variety of lengths you could get. Something in the collar bone to chin range is going to give you more ease in controlling the board (while initiating your turns) and still staying stable at slow to moderately fast speeds. If you increase the length of the board to between your chin and nose, this will increase stability at moderately fast to fast speeds, because you have a longer edge in contact with the snow. Your carving will take a little more time and effort while switching between your heel to toe edges. Many riders that lean toward the terrain park prefer a board on the shorter side due to their easier maneuverability. You might also want to check out the Snowboard Pro Camp Camber vs Rocker video to help you decide which style of camber best fits your riding goals. Hope this helps!
+Janne That snowboard in the video was a powder board. It was designed to be short and super wide to float in the powder. I've got a few videos in the gear playlist to help with board size and length!
Tension from the screws pulling the board to the binding can assist in delamination. It would only be a big problem if you were to get to much heat into the base it's always suggested that at the very least you loosen your screws so that there is a bit of space between board and binding. According to the guys at the shop the pulling force that the screws apply can be bad and I'll take their word at it since they get paid for board maintenance.
RomanTheSamoyed it really depends on the severity of the split. In most minor case I would say there is a fix, at least to get you through the rest of the season. Stop by your local ski repair shop next time you head up to the mountain and have them check it out.
Ohhh, thanx Ermecinn. Sometimes he takes a couple of weeks to edit a video and put it up so I wasn't sure. Do you know what that board is that he repairs??
Yes, its a Burton Custom. I believe this one www.burton.com/us/en/burton-custom-snowboard/W17-106881.html?dwvar_W17-106881_variationColor=10688103000151. There are line 10 Burton Custom so...

When I melt the ptex I use the straight edge immediately while it's still hot to press it in. I've noticed when I didn't do this the ptex pops out after a few days.
Just put it on fire keep it close enough to the board and let it drip into the clean and dry spot to repair the ptex will drip in the hole
You want a blue flame with Ptex. Yellow will mean your getting excess carbon deposited and you don't want that.
OspreyBravo18 how do you make sure you get the blue flame?
Frank Nguyen it will go blue once the it heats up enough. You just need to let it burn until you see the blue flame.
What is ptex? Is that silicon that you use in a glue gun? I need help
@@ViktorJ0van0vski ptex is the same material as your base. You can get it from your local shop. It is NOT the same as in a hot glue gun.
@@bubblepopinc keeping a razor blade or metal scraper close to the flame helps. Like a sandwich that goes metal scraper - ptex flame - base.

It's basically the only thing to use for minor base repair, until you get into deeper stuff where the core is heavily exposed, in which case you might want to take it to a shop where they can do what's called a base weld, which is mixture of epoxy and base material which is melted with a special gun into the base.
... and I've got a few tools and p-tex and lighter and... BANANAS!
Hey Kevin, do you have any advice on what age I should buy a snowboard, coz the ones I rent are really bad.
Zeid azhari you can buy a snowboard at any age. Renting boards is expensive
Jaimee Ellison thanks for the advice!
Zeid azhari would recommend buying an older model of a board. They're cheaper. I spent about 200 on my first board
Jaimee Ellison was it better than the boards you rented before?
Hey Kevin I live in Australia do you reckon you will ever come and snowboard down under?
+snipity sniper I would like to! Maybe in August or September!
Kevin, is it okay if i use candle wax and not snowboard wax? and use a Ruler for scraping the wax of and not using a scraper?
zyx candle wax doesn’t work
What can you use if you don't have that specific cleaner?
Like water and soap or something?
Hey man, how crazy do you get about making sure there is no unabsorbed wax left on your base? Sometimes I spend a 1/2 hour+ with the scraper and I don't know if I'm just being too critical.
+LitchRider I don't go too crazy. I think the snow will pull off any left over wax as you ride.
Are you talking about the Salomon board on your Facebook? Why did you pick that board?
you can use a hot glue gun to melt/apply the petex with a little more precision, just fyi. Best to use a new one tho so theres no risk of contaminating with glue residue
question.. what's a good way to clean up wax? I can never clean all of it up?
It's always a pain to clean up the wax because it gets everywhere! I'll sometimes use a Wet/dry Vacuum, but today I just swept up the wax.
I use a sheet but I've been wondering if there's an easier way!
Where did you get the stuff you filled the hole with?
In his garage the kan jam thing one of the teachers at my highschool invented it
This season just ended for me. Sorry for my bad english, and i hope to get an answer :)
can you use a normal iron for this? Or would it ruin the iron/board?
Will Thompson I use a cheap iron I bought just for this. There’s no difference. Don’t waste your money buying a “wax iron”
Will Thompson it can’t be a steam iron with holes
Trey Creason yes it can, just don’t put water in it
aren't you supposed to remove the bindings from the snowboard when you use the iron? i hear that the heat from the iron can warp the base if the screws from the bindings are let in
Bruh Sweet as a trained and certified ski tech I have never heard of this happening. I would say it might not be a great idea to put bindings on or try to tighten them immediately after waxing your board, since the material has softened up. Other than that, you should be just fine.
Hope this helps!
okay cool. thanks man. i have just heard of this happening and have never actually seen evidence. it'll be nice to wax my board without having to redo my stance everytime
if I used just a plain plastic instead of p-tex, will plastic still absorb the wax?
No
I noticed that the edges of my board had created some rust, I always try my best to dry off my board but just seems to keep coming back. Any tips?
Get an edge sharpener
An edge sharpener is a bit drastic, just use an erase with sand in it. A bit like the blue part of a normal pencil eraser
Monica Janabajal some super fine grit sand paper is just fine. Make sure you are scrapping the metal edge and not your base to avoid damaging it
What neck warmer are you wearing? It looks dope!
I've got a few videos in the gear playlist to help with board size and length!
kevin you forgot one crucial tool... bananas!
Why do you have the bindings still on the board while waxing?
I would normally take them off, but forgot to take them off this time.
Tension from the screws pulling the board to the binding can assist in delamination. It would only be a big problem if you were to get to much heat into the base it's always suggested that at the very least you loosen your screws so that there is a bit of space between board and binding. According to the guys at the shop the pulling force that the screws apply can be bad and I'll take their word at it since they get paid for board maintenance.
what are some good flex boards out their that are wide because i where a 13
Marcos Ortiz Should probs stick to pillaging villages
Marcos Ortiz and the Nitro magnum is a good board. and the Lib tech Travis rice pro horsepower edition.
Thank you
Kevin is the yes 420 your new board or do you have another one
+Matei Ghita I've got the YES 420 for powder and I picked up the Salomon Huck Knife for all mountain / park.
SnowboardProCamp sounds awesome please do a review on both
Can you save the wax and reuse it after you scrape it?
guitardaddy6 no
Kevin what wax iron is that your using?
Lee Duncan graphite
Is the iron a regular iron ?
Can I re use the wax that was scraped off of the board?
Ben Allen no, never !
Can you fix a snowboard if it got split a little on the side?
RomanTheSamoyed it really depends on the severity of the split. In most minor case I would say there is a fix, at least to get you through the rest of the season. Stop by your local ski repair shop next time you head up to the mountain and have them check it out.
Hey Kevin I went snowboarding my third time this weekend I got intermediate turns and carving on my second try thanks
Is there any way to tell if you burnt your base when waxing?
Blake Salisbury just dont leave the iron in one place for to long. you wont burn the bottom but the base will bubble and you'll be screwed.
Is that the Burton Custom you gave away for reaching 200,000 subscribers a few weeks ago???
No, he gave a Burton Custom Flying V if I am not wrong. His older board
OHHHH, but the 2015 model I assume from the base graphic... a pure park board!! No wonder he was dying to buy a powder board!!
When should i know i have to wax my board ? and why is wax so important on a snowboard?
How often should I wax my board?
What about the banana then?! Lol
What kind of sandpaper is that?
Could you use a normal iron
Can someone tell me what the difference between hot and cold wax is?
