Trey Azagthoth Interview ("Formulas" Era)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 жов 2012
- Trey Azagthoth talks about the Formulas album, what happened with David Vincent, Steve Tucker, Pete's magical drumming powers, and personal beliefs. Trey also gives a tour of a swamp.
"To me, the meaning of a band is a group of individuals all moving in the same direction." Well put, Trey!
this guy is real as fuck
He really is, he has a good vibe and is pretty funny and is a great musician
Yeah he speaks his mind in a very unique and interesting way . What a legend
guy is a genius, doesn't surprise me at all that he is quite eccentric
There's a very fine line between genius and madness.
@@williamsmith666 Death metal and black metal heads like us... it's very true.
@@EuanWhitehead You said it.
@Bart Lee this is 1998, how silly of you to think their opinions are the same after 20 years.
@@williamsmith666 Yeah, a line of cocaine.
"If a belief doesn't serve you, it's useless and meaningless."
--Trey Azagthoth
Trey plays D&D. Respect.
trey plays quake and doom. he had a clan in golden age of quake3. he also created few maps/mods for doom2. instagib. :)
i love his take on Domination. Exactly spot on. and FFTTF is much like Covenant. Their best album.
Trey seems like a casual introvert geek who loves exstreme metal and love playing music. Kinda relatable. xP O_O
trey should have done a wildlife programme....
I’d love to watch that!
It could be called "Azagthoth's Animals" or something.
one of the most unique dm guitarists, and metal in general.
My favorite professional drinker
He was a pretty sick guitarist anyway. Very influential. That will always be true, regardless of all the other bullshit.
I'm 22 years old. I started listening to metal with neo bands like linkin park and slipknot etc. Then 2 years of being into -core stuff.
Then I had some arguments about metal on forums (traditional metal and extreme metal vs whatevercore) and I was really the annoying hypocritical kid that said "fuck the oldheads muh core is better!!!!" and then asked for eclecticism and open mindness when I got my cheeks clapped in the "debate"
Then someone recommended me Morbid Angel. Gateways.
Never went back to the core. Morbid Angel is my favorite band ever period and it led to so many great discoveries in death metal, black metal, thrash, traditional heavy, etc.
Thank you Master Azagthoth for all your great music. Except that 2011 album lol
Lol, I also started with Linkin Park and SlipKnot,I still listen to the often
I’m a 30 year old woman who grew up listening to 80s dark wave (but linkin park was also one of my first cds lol!) and I’m just getting into Morbid Angel! I never thought I’d love blastbeats so much lol
Morbid Angel was my first introduction to extreme music. Growing up on Metallica, Hot Topic shit bands, then a girlfriend I had in 6th grade, her step dad showed me a live video of Where The Slime Live.
Rest is history.
Nile is the most violently heaviest band in the world. Morbid right next to them
My god I can relate to Trey so much personally. I love this man and his music.
Strange guy, incredible musician, and he actually have very good vibes.
Scary
"Sludge riffing" hahah I love that
I used to listen to morbid angel in the early nineties, saw them live couple of times, defenitely in love with trey... and i never really saw his face or listened to an interview.. just learned his riffs on my guitar and that was enough for me ... loved his way to stay in the shadows, just like a true guitarist has and loves to do, leaving the spotlights to the frontman but being the soul of the band.
First time I've heard an interview with Trey, not what I expected him to be like at all
What were you expecting? His music is pretty eccentric as well
@@LeoM-zt3pl It's not really just the eccentricity, it's how "sunny" he is as well.
Trey is one hilarious/strange dude. Jamming on his BC Rich Ironbird "instagib", living in his elderly mother's house, copious bong hits and acid tabs = one eccentric/unique individual!
Living in his elderly mother's house?
wth?
Precious interview. Trey isn't weird at all, love him to bits. Many thanks for the share MAFM.
One of a kind as DM guitarrist, Trey has also got an important point concerning his views on personal beliefs.
He seems like a super cool guy.
Damn dude he’s just the homie fr lol
I would go back in time and have a chat or two with this man any day
formulas is probably the best album they did
No way man alters of madness
Nah, Gateways
Yes, it is. I'm glad that on "Kingdoms Disdained" they returned to such playing.
@@avocadodip2157 I agree. You can't beat that album.
FFTTF> Gateways> Heretic> Domination> Alters> Blessed> Kingdoms> Covenant> Abominations
We don't talk about Illud Divinum Insanus. What a dumpster fire.
Nice to see him energetic and coherent.
I love how they're playing Nothing is Not in the beginning
Trey is probably one of the smartest people in death metal.
I would agree , also Glen Benton & Alex Webster
@@LeoM-zt3pl definitely not glen lol but Alex yes
@@camilojaramillo2830 benton has that gene Simmons businessman iq.
Sorry bro but don’t use the word smart and Trey in the same sentence. Because that makes no sense at all. 😆
@@harryangel4822Trey's IQ is like 150...
Wow you can really sense Trey's animosity towards David Vincent. Perhaps all that chanting drove Trey mad while all he really wanted to do was shred on his ibanez and take massive hits from the bong in peace
Davids stupid fucking lyrics ruin their sound. Hes like a big grown up poser. Would really like if Trey actually did rewrite Domination with lyrics he writes, Chris sings. Would be catastrophic
Young trey look like a cross between slash and marty Friedman
hahahaha yeah you right
More like a cross between Friedman and Gary Cherone.
Trey? Isn't this that Sammy Kerr guy from that movie? LOL
He seems to have a similar personality to Marty as well
In the same caliber as chuck from death. Chill nice guy with heavy intellectual. Not to mention quality musician.
Good old days when you had Trey Azagthoth explaining Satanism on mainstream TV music channel. Also in the olden days MTV was about music.
Trey is so fucking epic. Guck the fools who claim Formulas is mediocre. It's daily their best lyrical effort and treys leads are outta this world. Check the love of lava cd CI got that shit. All the lead tracks. Isolated. Heaving earth just fuckin wow man
Steve Tucker is by far the best vocalist Morbid ever had.
Formulas is the best morbid angel album. I don't care what anyone says. Yes-altars through covenant is classic, dominant ain't bad either..I dig gateways, never got into heretic and won't comment on the most recent one but formulas..wow! The most psychedelic, best lyrics, abrupt changes in feel, best dynamics, probably has the best examples of fast morbid angel and sludgy/slow ma...I feel like Pete's best playing is on the album and it has my favorite trey solos as well by far..so gnarly (that solo on invocation!!)...and give me tucker over vincent anyday. Formulas is the most underrated album in death metal
matthew britt
"Nothing is Not" is one of the greatest death metal songs out there I'd say.
Pete sure shined in Formulas, the record is full of magic.
Yes. It's outstanding. And considering we were kinda worried about how things would work post Vincent, that album is an amazing accomplishment. I am still in awe of it. Long live Commando
Nice! What a great album Formulas was. Was that Trey emerging with the mic from the bog in the album booklet? That picture is really cool. Probably taken right where these guys are doing this video.
Probably the most Florida thing I ever saw in my life
Opening song is Heartwork by Carcass, and then the video is about MA? Godammit, now I have to change my pants
No , its nothing is not .MA
metalheadoldschol no the song before that is heartwork
just a standard segue into another segment
I feel like Trey could've been an excellent zoo keeper or tour guide. But I'm sure glad that never happened and we got Morbid Angel instead!
Love the D&D Insect Swarm spell reference.
Tery : who would have thought 😬
What a pleasant person, super cool and a brilliant artist 😬👍🏻
All morbid angel's albums are unchallengeably mindblowing; but for me GTA (gateways to annihilation) remains no doubt the "Hors serie" of Morbid, the most outstanding performance in extreme music throughout metal history ever
Treys vocals kinda suck. Thats my only complaint with the album.
I always felt GtA was a watered down FFttF but that's just my personal preference. I recognise Eric Rutan as an awesome musician but I never really got into his stuff.
"that's stagnation" hahah Trey is the shit in my opinion the most original guitar players in death metal from their beginning till now his solos are never stagnant they are always original, his song writing is always amazing not one bad album, not all as good as the last but all amazing in their own right. MORBID ANGEL the kings of DEATH METAL
In 2001 i saw Morbid Angel with Slayer and Pantera headlining in Las Vegas at the Thomas and Mack center, and Damn !..definately one of the greatest shows ive seen.
Definitely NOT caught in a lie. Trey gives a shout out to Laibach on the Blessed Are the Sick liner notes, but they aren't industrial. But, he likes electronic music.. When he refers to industrial, I think he's talking about the Genitorturers style of industrial that David and his wife are into.
great post.
I love both David and Trey. I think David is smart and he's nice, and obviously his vocals were good especially on Altars and Blessed, and Trey is a genius, he's my idol and I also really like the way he talks and explains things. Anyway, I understand that they have had differences and that, they look like kinda different worlds.
God, I watched that when it was originally aired by VIVA-TV. Time flies by.
Trey!!!! I remember me & Janet coming over to your house on Hawthorne ave. in Charlotte, NC when we were all teenagers!!!
At 6:40 he is talking about Davids band The Genitorturers, an S&M industrial metal band based in Florida.
I got to know Morbid Angel through this very episode of the show that I recorded on VHS. Seems like a life ago.
if you listen to the gates of the silver key by hp lovecraft, you can see where Trey gets his inspiration for his lyrics
Trey scares the s*** out of me
06:00 oh trey, wait till david comes back and youll see whats industrial in 2011 lol
@Bart Lee David Vincent, is that you?
@@Three-LeggedCat ?
Legend
First time I've heard him speaking.
1 of my fav Morb tunes is on Forms, awesome shit
a so nice guy!
Damn, he was the David Lee Roth of death metal.
lmao
I'm catching up to Pete The Feet Sandoval slowly but surely. I'm coming for you
3:32 "David was scratching down lyrics" 💀 😆 🤣 you can really sense the anger that Trey felt towards David's lackadaisical attitude towards Death Metal lyric.
hail Trey, best death metal guitarist
That's so awesome! Did you guys ever use the Necronomicon? I know Trey was really into that. It pretty much inspired all of Morbid Angel's music. The album Altars of Madness, in particular.
He's so high
I wish I was high, sigh.
He is just a sperg.
@@dominicross96 yeah, man, this is the crazy you only see from people who are completely sober.
Trey is a sperg, but he's our sperg.
@@dormiebasne3578 Trey sober? que DV laugh from slime
Trey is the best person in metal to this day. This dude is the ultimate metal head.
Finally. So thaaaaat's where the slime live
Trey is such a well spoken dude....did he really invent DEATH METAL tho?
I heard he got into that. Well, I won't be surprised if dubstep is on their next album. I didn't mind Illud at all (I enjoyed it quite a bit), so we'll see.
couldn't agree more, I've always thought so...they should have stuck with that sound and expanded it. there was so much potential there. it makes me sad.
Awesome dude
His comments on Dave's departure show him to be incredibly mature and self aware. Rare qualities, especially among people who have enjoy a relatively high profile and renown in their sphere.
Dungeons and Dragons insect swarm haha ! Love it !
somebody podría traducir this interview??
thx
Yes, it's an invention of H.P. Lovecraft, but there are many books that are called the Necronomicon. I'm talking about the Simon Necronomicon, which Trey and all of the guys in Morbid Angel used.
Where the slime live riff and video are so badass
"All kind of nice little creatures out here, right out of d&d,like the insect swarm spell"...I have to meet this guy!
Trey's FUCKING AWESOME HERE! HE DEFINATELY went 5 levels up in my respect scale after this video. I Thought he was some ass after not appearing at all in the "Blessed Are The Sick" DVD Reissue, but man isn't he a cool guy!
He was really cool!! Much like he is now. We were both into witchcraft. I'm not anymore though. But that was how I met him & also thru best-friend & mother to David Briggs who used to play w/ group "Wretched"!.
You dated Trey? Pretty rad.
That's crazy! Would you be willing to tell me about some of your experiences with the book?
6:00 where was he when they were recording the new album then?
The slime live in Tampa Florida!!
He's been in the Temple of Ostx for a long time though.
6:17 yes.
Banana spiders....FUCK...THAT
"A little, Mancubus".. Hilarious!
I can. But only the scariest stuff I remember. I'm a born again Christian & recovering alcoholic since 1998!
6:54 wtf
Yummy, bug spray
All their records are sick imo I even liked the weird edm one lmao
But in all seriousness Covenant is Perfect
What shirt is he wearing
Im not aware of the whole MA history, can anyone link or say what kind of inteview was that? (Of Vincent talking shit, painting a false image of a band)
You get what you pay for. All outcomes are ultimately deserved. Morals don't change the fabric of reality.
What this poor individual doesn’t understand is he was inches away from being eaten by trey who is known to swallow whole truth and sanity
Fuck yes, you are speaking the truth. Fuck inherited morality without the weak decent into nihilism: be a destroyer, and build your castle amongst the ashes of your ancestors ideals.
I hope I meet trey one day he's fucking sick
I love Trey but ignorance does not mean ignoring something. Ignorance means having a lack of knowledge. Its a common word that most know its definition. Formulas was an awesome record though
You may wish to readjust your knowledge of the word. Yes, part of ignorance is a lack of knowledge, but it is also a lack of awareness. Being deliberately unaware is to be ignorant, or to ignore and thus have a lack of knowledge/understanding.
If you're going to lambaste someone for your perception of the definition of a word - you better damn well know all possible meanings yourself, as to not look a fool.
Ignorance means to ignore.
+Squiggly667 Very late reply but I'm compelled to defend myself. I cannot find a definition of ignorance that means ignoring. A lack of knowledge, yes but lack of knowledge does not mean ignoring. To ignore can be a byproduct of a lack of understanding but it does not mean a lack of understanding. Lack of awareness is close to the act of ignoring but it has to be deliberate to qualify which is a byproduct of Ignorance not Ignorance itself. Trey says in a very matter of fact way that Ignorance means to ignore. He is wrong, in fact you will not find the word ignore in any definition of the word. I have looked up the definition to make sure I know what I'm talking about and Webster and two other online dictionaries confirm my assertion. I'm not talking shit about Trey, I love the guy, I'm merely pointing out an indiscretion in his language.
doesn't like industrial.....what do you call the new album Trey!? :(
it was vincent. i was hoping for legendary line-up, saw few shows where they played almost whole altar of madness, when david just returned. but man, he wandered too far from classic dm. its better without him, as sad as it sounds.
He has just as much say in the album being released as David does. I expected something like this from David but I'm genuinely disappointed in Trey :(
A little late but...I mean, the worst thing about Illud is not even there being industrial in there, but bad industrial. Childish non-ironic song titles and lyrics in Radikult, Too extreme, Desthrictor vs the Earth, etc.
QuietHero you call it shit
Later on in life Trey got into aggrotech and hardcore techno over death metal. Both are a bit different than industrial.
But I'd argue that influence was more in songs like "Mea Culpa", that was probably what he was looking to do.
"Radikult" is 100% Vincent, and 100% inexcusable.
"they're ll be nothing industrial" yeah right
It's true, there is a little mancubus where the slime live
Guy is definately legit, not faking anything!
Idk. Man seems like a nice place to smoke up
Damn, you knew Trey? What was he like as a teen?
Vader - Dark Age !!!!
6:00 caught in a lie.
he looks like a young version of jordan petterson hajahja
