I absolutely loved this video. Thank you for posting it. I was welling up with tears at the beautiful images and sounds. I visited Kruger in 2008 and had my brother-in-law not driven us off to lunch, I could have stayed a little longer to watch the first wild bull elephant I had ever seen. I still don't forgive him. I also spent hours at a hippo pool, which was my favorite place to be. The lion at the end brought back the experience of hearing one for the first time and the vibration of that sound in my chest. It was shocking and wonderful.

Nothing short of genius, in your delivery & content. (part 2) & to top that, poetic too. you obviously have a deep connection & understanding of the natural world & it's movement. Besides the kaleidoscope of imagery & feeling, you have the ability to teach, not only camera tech, but history, & human behavior too (waving ) (haha) Then the melody fits !

I really liked your comment about capturing the emotion of wild situations. It’s a style I try to practice - but I guess it’s because I’m really a landscape photographer first and foremost. But then animals are an integral part of most landscapes.

Beautiful and heartfelt video. I finally made it to SA in March/April and was able to spend a couple days in southern Kruger. I wish I could have had the serenity in my visit that this video portrays. You and your video have changed my mind, so if I ever make it back there, I'll give Kruger another shot. Thank you. Cheers from Maine, USA. :) Paula

    • @WillGoodlet
      @WillGoodlet  2 роки тому

The south can get quite busy, especially in the school holidays. Try to avoid those weeks and any public holidays if you can!! They do limit the entry but the road along the Sabie River has a reputation for a lot of sightings and although it's true, I try to avoid it. There are some lovely dirt roads east/west across the south.
The north is a different place. It's got different animals, and lower concentrations of big cats but a lovely remote feel.
It's important to take your time there. Spend at least 3-4 nights at each camp, because otherwise it can feel very rushed, driving to a new camp each day. Drop me an email before your next trip and I'll tell you the best spots. Hope you come back.

In Camera Lucida, Roland Barthes talks about the studium (the photo itself) and the punctum (how the viewers’ experience can make a photo pop). Barthes implies that the photographer cannot have direct control over the punctum but your commentary within this film gets as close as it gets in influencing how your work pops to the viewers. Extraordinary work Will. I’m really looking forward to the next film and I hope it’s not too long in happening. I hope you are well sir!

👍🏻. That has really whetted my appetite for my trip to SA in a month's time! How lucky you are to have the wonderful wildlife so near. I once saw a map which showed how little is left of the true wild in SA. I think people in the UK think all of Africa looks like the Serengeti. It's so sad to see wild areas squeezed out by urban sprawl. Of course we in the UK should get off our high horse having destroyed most of our wildlife hundreds of years ago (as well as hunting Africa's). Anyway, thanks for sharing your thoughts as well as the wonderful pictures.

Hi Will, I echo the sentiment below. I searched tonight and was pleased to find this relaxing and informative post. By the way, in Texas, out on lonely country roads, it is customary to wave to others by just raising your index finger or two from the steering wheel. Almost everyone in the country drives a pickup or SUV. When the new subject/sky mask came out in Lightroom I used it to soften backgrounds but your soften function in the toolkit still works great in most instances. All the best to you.

Hi Will, I only discovered your channel today, sadly, but I’ve made up for it by binging many of the videos! This video of Shingwedzi hit me particularly hard in the old feels. It’s my favourite camp, and it’s now been four years since we’ve been able to get to the Kruger. Prior to moving to Melbourne, we used to go to the park three or four times a year, now at best it’s once every two years. It’s a special place unlike any other. I wanted to say how phenomenal it was to see your video review of the R5, crucially how you put things in the context of African wildlife photography, from a car. There are perhaps 1% of UA-cam wildlife photography creators who understand that this is an area of photography that is unique in its demands. I describe it by saying it’s like being in a blender and trying to get a photo of something through the blades, where you don’t control the light, subject,or behaviour, and you can’t leave the road to follow the action! And all of the action usually happens completely unexpectedly & and is over in 10 seconds, never to be repeated!
For folks watching these videos overseas, perhaps in preparation for a trip, I cannot tell you how accurate, on-point, and relevant these videos are; this is how it really is!
Anyhow, a long winded way of saying thank you for making me feel better for the thousand’s of $ I’ve just spent to go mirrorless, and for making me even more excited about our upcoming month in the Kruger!
    Cheers,
    Mark

@@WillGoodlet I've spent some time in Missoula, so I know that area well. There is the National Bison Range about an hour or so NW of Missoula. Then there's Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks within a half day. The Panhandle of Idaho is also pretty amazing and River Runs through it like. Cheers and happy shooting!

As always Will that was a real treat, I love your videos and photos which are accompanied by your wonderful narrative, it's obviously educational for someone like me at home here in the UK and it gives great context to all that we are seeing and experiencing from your superb film making. This really is the very best of UA-cam, thank you Will. PS the panorama of the bull elephant is fantastic!

Also I would like to add I am from the Deep South in the US and we also wave at other cars as we pass by, primarily when you are on back roads in the countryside.

Another excellent video. I thought that the haunting music, Infinite Bliss, by Drift Far Away was ideally suited to a beautiful video. I really enjoyed it - well done Will. Alun

Really enjoyed your video again . Especially the part where you talk about how you prefer to photograph a scene over a portret en try to convey the atmosphere in the hope that others will feel the same as you did when you took the shot.

A fantastic video, Will. Thank you. I'll probably never get the opportunity to experience and photograph nature and wildlife in the way you can. I live in the UK and I do my best, but it's becoming more and more difficult. Few places here are in their natural state, and it shows in the pressure that wildlife is under. Watching your work gives me at least some hope that there are places where nature is partly left alone. I hope it continues, and I hope the remaining reserves can continue and even thrive.

Thanks for watching Mike! When I watch the struggles you have to undertake in the UK to photograph, I know I’d have so much to learn - not least getting fit! It’s a reminder to appreciate everything we have.
I actually moved from the UK to SA to change my life and photograph here - accepting that my older self would not enjoy the likely financial consequences of that. It’s a mixed bag - the opportunity to travel is probably greater staying in the Uk as once you are living here it’s virtually impossible to travel anywhere else due to costs. But at least here the elephants are 2hrs away.

O wow Will.... I love where you are taking you're channel. You've turned it into an wildlife / African educational channel. They should hire you at the BBC to narrate nature documentary. Your voice is so clear and nice to listen to. I think you're videos are just getting better and better. Of course you're goal is still photography but you are doing so much more. You are sucking is into the African wilderness and the only thing I want is to watch more. And the best thing is that you apriciate the small things in nature. It is so interesting to watch because we just don't know anything about these small animals usualy. Keep them comming Will like I said I just can't get enough of them! Greetings guido

Waiting with baited breath. Hard to find true wilderness in the modern world. We just have to make the best of the wild places we do still have, and work to help people understand their value.

@@WillGoodlet I'll be here. Its hard work I am sure. Sometimes we just need to step away for a bit. In a few months I will be permanently stepping away from the work I have done all my life. It is definitely time to move on. It is a bit unsettling. A new chapter.

Awesome, just discovered you channel (through Gimbal reviews of all things) and very much enjoying the content. The shot of the monkeys in the tree with the sun in the background I think conveys exactly the mood/feelings you mention in your video and for a brief moment transports the viewer there. Excellent.
