As a retired Special Ed teacher taking up drawing at age 68, I compliment you on your sympathetic delivery of information - you are wordy in a good sense (no wasted words), and explain things in greater detail than many other drawing instructors. I would encourage you to do even more than you have in respect to drawing exercises for beginners, and going into even more depth in helping beginners to understand the art of being self critical and learning from mistakes (being your own teacher) and handling frustration. You may want to check out books & professional journals dealing with 'Math Anxiety'. I suspect many quit drawing (quit drawing attempts) out of frustration. Having taken violin lessons at age 55 for about six months to get to the point where I could play many folk songs, I have the advantage of having worked through something that was really difficult for me. So I know what it feels like to do (bow) exercises day after day for weeks while seeing no visible progress, but doing so on the advice of my teacher. I don't suppose drawing is that difficult for most folks, but I suppose it could be for some, and especially for some older folks.Keep up the good work. You explain things in a very personable and detailed way that does not come across as tiresome to me at all, and I suppose many other beginners have the same feeling. We want to know what you are thinking about as you teach, and you explain that well. This your strong point, so make the most of it.
Alonso, I watch many drawing tutorials and yours are among my favorites. Your explanations are clear, you offering multiple approaches, and your tone is warm and encouraging. Thanks for being a model teacher!
Been following for about two years now and bought the book "pen and ink drawing" and its worth every penny my friends and family have seen a major improvements in my drawings. Thank you for this easy to follow and guide to pen and ink
As a retired educator who is learning to draw I find your teaching style refreshing. You make your points and concepts understandable in your explanations and demonstrations. Extremely well done. A pleasure to listen to. Thank you for teaching and sharing!!
You are a great instructor, so clear. I have the 2 books and want to ask for you to make another, doing your you tube anatomy which I am starting now. There is nothing Ive found so clear. THANK YOU.
I love how all of your tutorials are so informative, and really helpful. I really appreciate you putting your videos here, they have helped me grow a lot~ :)
I just recently stumbled on to your videos because they were in the recommended section. I didn't even have an interest in learning to draw, but I have been following your videos and I i am actually getting good at this stuff xD
books are important for laying out a structure on concepts that videos can only summarize. Videos are very essential though, for demonstration of the concepts
Alfonso, your videos have been an excellent source of learning for me. I have learned at fast pace due to your tutorials. I normally don't comment on you tube, but because of your tutorials i have started to learn how to do something I've wanted to do for almost a lifetime and that is to be able to draw. Thank you very much for your instruction because now i know that drawing is not a gift you are born with.
Process stuff like this is really essential for me :). I would really love to see more "How to start drawing" drawing Process or drawing Process creation videos like this!. Maybe even taking the work of masters or by request other artists and breaking down how they go about things through observation then demonstrations like this :)
Thanks man this really helps I used to draw but I stopped and I lost my way to draw it used to be a passion and now when I draw it's difficult but just seeing u r video helped me a lot thank u
Thank you Alphonso for your awesome work!! its just awesome!! Thank you very much! I have a question, im studing studying architecture in the first year and im not really good in sketching architecture, could you please make a tutorial for it. Thx
very interesting, i always get confused with that, the matter between different types of construction, thank you, i adore you, really, the way you teach, so good...
I really enjoy your work and learning from your work. Thank you and I was wondering where did you get your pencils you were using in this video? I hope to see many more videos and maybe even putting videos of my own. Once again thank you :-)
Good video Alphonso.... Makes such perfect sense about getting bigger or smaller when your going part by part. The other ways make that so much easier. It borders on common sense and to think us humans try to complicate it... Who us?!
I know right...We always want to defy common sense. I was always taught that common sense is not common. I have to make it a habit to remind myself lol
***** Yes, I'm definitely going to incorporate concepts communicated in videos such as this in teaching art. It's helpful to be able to see such a great artist and teacher such as yourself modeling teaching art. Here's my artist's website if you'd like to check out some of my work: www.shanasmithfineart.com Keep up the good work!
Hello Alphonso, very good tutorial....just wanted to ask....how is ur series of books coming up....please do let me know....if its already in market and if i can get it, please. Thank you.
I´m sorry to ask for such a stupid question, but... could you give me an example on how to draw a four armed torso?!... I tried for quite a while now, but cand just seem to find the right anatomically "rightness" I´m searching for...
***** I know, it seems tricky...try drawing the arm first, then you "figure"/make the anatomy AFTER. The key is to make the structure seem to flow from the torso to the arms...maybe its better explained in a tutorial lol
you don't have to make a whole tutorial about it just for one question, a random guy asked xP... the thing is just, that the chest muscles look too weird no matter how I try it xD... well don't mind it, I'll try to figure something out around the way you have mentioned : ) thank you ^-^
***** no prob. I would play around with it. have the chest muscles flow into the top arms like usual then have the ab muscles flow into the lower arms in a way similar to how the chest would, but dont make it too specific then it will draw attention and look fake, make it somewhat ambiguous so you cant really tell what is what lol ;-)
No, I mean pen and ink drawing without any preparatory lines... I heard it's good practice because you have to commit to your lines and deal with mistakes
***** You know when your drawing a person, and they have their arm out stretched toward you,the hand is bigger and body smaller.Maybe I used the wrong terminology.I always lose perspective in these types of drawings. Thanks again for all you do,and for getting back to me
hello Alphonso, i am all new to ur videos but very much interested in what i have seen so far. i really want hardcore beginners tutorial on the basics of drawing, i can i get all packaged videos please. and for the book i am surely interested please.
This is awesome. You did the best "how to draw" videos on youtube. But you should think about the Video and Sound quality of your Videos. They could be much better. 480p isn't state of the art. There are very good webcams for less than 80$ that can record in 1080p. Think about it. But anyway...you did a great job...!!!...Thanks for helping me to become a better artist...!!!
awesome video mannn ! you are very talentfull and calm to explain the methods step by step. I would really like to see a tutorial of how to iniciate landscape drawings, with mountains, clouds an trees. the techniques os shading landscapes made me mad !!! Very hard for me. That you be very helpfull for me if you do this tutorial. I've seen a lot of videos on youtube but nobody explains better than you MAN!!! Great fucking job !! continue on doing this. a Hello from brazil !!
I have a question... you were saying that incorporating all of these approaches would be best, bit wouldnt the final drawing look too messy with all the sketches underneath?
Hello Alphonso, "You're the man!" like I red it so many times ahahahha :). You really are!! Thanks a lot!! You're ours artistical father and we love you! (y) (y) :) :) (I hope that no one ask it before I did... If someone did sorry then) If you had to give an order to all of your tutorial video, what would it be? (i think that for avoid this question, you could put a number or a title like "lesson 1" with your videos. It don't have to be in a perfect order but just to let people know what would be in your opinion the right video to begin with and so on) And if for any reason you don't want to do something like that, could you tell me please in your opinion If I start drawing today, where should I begin? What are the 3 things I should learn first? Forms? Human proportion? Perspectives? Shading? etc.. I thnik that you could even do a simple vidéo that explain it "Where to begin and what's next". With this video you won't need to use title or number on your video anymore :) (yeaaah :p).
I rather use 3D forms. I don't use cylinders and circles as much, I just have all the shape in my mind, all the ways it curves. I can cut what I'm drawing and see this cut flat, with all the muscles, bones, folds etc. And I still fail in general. Some things are very clear to me but some... I don't even see what I'm doing wrong. I do what everyone does, I simplify things just as much. It should be easy but it's not. I should learn and I don't. Cause it's simple and nothing else is there to learn, except for making it automatic and that never happens. Maybe my wish to control the drawing process 100% is in the way. Most of the times I can't draw small elements as the line thickness is more than my error, so 2-3 lines make it thick enough to hide all the mistakes and not let me fix them. Then again, good artists always draw the way their lines have some freedom, they could be not exactly like that and still look fine. I'll keep watching and trying to figure out what's broken in me. The vid's inspiring, thanks Alphonso.
Hello so i just found your channel and it's incredibly useful! But my drawings never get pass sketching, never shade or color or ink them :( what should i do? (Ive been drawing for years and it still isnt good)
Dont worry....sometimes its important to spend enough time mastering the basics as best as you can....over and over before you go on to more challenging or complex subjects...set goals for yourself and dont give up!
I a m at the point where I will begin to view the multiple video compilations under distinct subject headings. Some I will have viewed as single stand alone vid's but I look forward to viewing any of Mr. Dunn's stuff for 2nd time. He is that good or well versed in my opinion. I do feel temporally retarded or out of date as a 61 year old beginner. I often imagine Mr. Dunn presented his thesis defense in a MFA program at a prestigious university or Arts School. As I have noted his dominant strengths in a number of almost uncountable areas, I have to wonder if he is some kind of savant or genius particularly his patience and definitive comprehensiveness begs me to increase the feeling that he must be an outstanding individual. Now let me restart this 5 starting ways vid!
You're definitely too kind. Thanks so much for the kind words. I love teaching and I am student of learning, drawing and just plain effective communication : )
"My least favorite way..." That's probably my least favorite - or least frequently used - method as well, but it has its merits. For instance with a portrait sometimes the overall shape of the head is much obscured by the hair (which itself can be of an extremely irregular complex shape) and often in a photographic reference the eyes are much clearer and in better focus than the outer perimeter of the head. I'd say a really good example of the merits of this approach is Lucian Freud. i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/01795/lucian_s_1795948i.jpg uploads1.wikipaintings.org/images/lucian-freud/woman-in-a-white-shirt-1957.jpg He makes excellent creative use of the distortions in proportion that result, kind of like a jazz musician making improvisational use of his "mistakes".
Even in his case the whole has already been established (in pencil). Establishing the whole doesn't mean it has to be "well-proportioned" or you have to follow it exactly either, it simply means you have an overview of the journey you're about to take, much like a map or gps route, but you still have the freedom to make a detour or two, and jazz-up your route a little :-)
Books are good, but your videos are so great! I'd be very interested in you doing some in-depth video courses on udemy.com for example... just a thought.
The idea is that a book can be invaluable as a reference guide...And it gives me the chance to elaborate on concepts in ways I don't have time to in videos...but of course the videos are always a good accompaniment

books are important for laying out a structure on concepts that videos can only summarize. Videos are very essential though, for demonstration of the concepts
***** So, was that a yes to the DVD's in addition to the books

I'll definitely buy your book when it comes out, but would you recommend any book for anatomy and drawing poses that maybe was helpful to you?
Natasza W I've gone through many, but most are very similar. I think I will post something on that soon
Nice
what is that tool u use for red markings is that a pencil color
When sketching with pen, is there any other way than drawing it part by part without having it look super messy?
lol whats wrong with messy...you can erase the mess away lol...not good enough?
No, I mean pen and ink drawing without any preparatory lines... I heard it's good practice because you have to commit to your lines and deal with mistakes
thats especially good when doing gesture drawings, like here How to sketch & draw people Part 2 | Gesture Drawing
This is extremely helpful thank you for this!
glad its helpful...:-)
You're a very good teacher. You should be an art teacher.
I am, part-time lol
thank you for the video. really helpful.!
ryu sunghun no worries
Able to teach

Group portrait
Vanishing point?
Another great helpful video. I really like the pens/pencils you're using, could you tell me what brand they are?
Alvin 2mm lead holders
***** Are those colored leads erasable? I already have a 2mm lead holder and might like to try them out.
partially..so tread lightly
OMG professor. ..I'm so happy :D
I can't wait to have your book:)
Great video like always;)
Thanks my little genius...I will keep you posted
:) ♡.♡
what is the brand of your lead pencils sir Dunn?
Thanks Alphonso,You make it fun and ez,to learn. Can YOU do one on fore shortening ?Maybe you can make that a little easier for me to get done.
Here you go Linear Perspective Drawing | What is foreshortening? How to draw things & people in perspective :-)

rockymontana1 Foreshortening? I have a video onthat as well
ALPHONSO DUNN what drawing materials are you using in this video and where do you purchase the holders or utensils you are also using in this video?
I should include them all in the description. the lead holders I get at Blick arts
Your teaching ability is greater than your artistic ability - if that is possible.
Lol
where did you get your lead holders and color leads from this video at and whats the name brand of the lead holders and color leads please.
+Bum Extraordinaire The lead holder is by Alvin I got at a local Blick Supplies store and the colored leads are from amazon and ebay
What kind of metrials you use in this video and what is the name of it ?
+Azzoz Kaaki 2mm lead pencils

Paul Osagiobare thanks much...I say start with the fundamentals playlists and the book will be out soon. Perhaps a month or two
what brand is your red and blue lead pencil? and where u get it at?
+Jillian Agustin Alvin. But the 2mm leads were purchased separately

Marco Costa ebay...not sure of the brand...2mm lead holder refills

Not at all if done lightly
you are a genius teacher
+Azzoz Kaaki I wish lol but thanks

Blocking in is awesome, ty much for getting me to expand my drawing hoopla.
Thanks much for sharing that. :-)
Missed this one :)
lol
and do u think you can teach us a faster way of drawing body figures without guidelines... just pen paper and BAM
what pencil are you using bro?
khai turtle 2mm lead holders. Just with colored leads
what type of pens do you use.
Thisusernameisunpracticalylong 2mm lead holders, theyre basically mechanical pencils with a 2mm lead instead of a 0.5, 0.7, or 0.9
useful info, i think inside out works better
6 for one and half-dozen for the other...I like them all :-)
Or do you sketch in pencil and after inking it you just erase the pencil lines?
Yup thats it
You've helped me so much.
I would love it if your videos were higher def as often, i cant see the early stages of the drawing.
Amazing though..
Will work on that..dont worry

He makes excellent creative use of the distortions in proportion that result, kind of like a jazz musician making improvisational use of his "mistakes".
