I feel like im getting instruction from an old master artist! Thank you from the bottom of my heart, alphanso! You are so generous to take the time to teach on you tube! This info is so valuable to those of us who have struggled to learn to draw, and so very well taught! Ive learned so much. Ty again. You totally rock.
Your channel doesn't get enough recognition as it should. You are literally one of the few who help us learn step by step. I appreciate it so much and best believe I bought both of your books. Thank you so much Alphonso!
I am still amazed that any of Alphonso's videos are given a thumbs down. The "thumbs down" people must have some serious personal issues. Alphonso takes the time to make a quality video with quality instruction. Thank you Alphonso!!
I love how your videos don't just teach someone how to copy a simple drawing. Instead you talk about concepts artists actually use to understand and imagine how things will look on paper. That's really where art skill comes from and I'm glad you focus on that. Thank you! Keep up the great work!
Hi , I have just been watching your videos on shading techniques and wanted to say thanks , I have just begun to draw again after a break of forty years as I recently retired from work currently I am drawing physiques bodybuilders from black and white photographs from the nineteen fifties and found your shading videos to be most helpful and I agree with comments from others that your simple and logical thought processes on light sources and shadows and concentrating on the major masses primarily then the minor masses to be the most helpful I have found and really useful when detailing physiques thanks again for simple easy to grasp videos
I've been trying to teach myself how to draw the past 2 years and this just streamlined so much information that nobody else was teaching me about fundamentals. THIS is everything.
You are such a great teacher, thanks so much for putting these informational videos on UA-cam... definitely going to be watching as many as I can! God bless you!
You're a great teacher and awesome at what you do when I'm asked if I got so good at art school I tell them no I watch UA-cam and your one of the first guys I accredit with my education thank you for all your help
You are as talented an instructor as you are an artist. Your explanation of things is so understandable to novices, such as myself. Thank you for sharing!
Genius video. Totally understandable and your drawings talk for themselves. Watching you drawing helps a lot. I like it when people do such practical videos.
Probably one of the first videos where Alphonso is either giving us instruction on the construction and parts of muscle in his anatomy videos to his tips on where you can not just try to make masterpieces on each page of a sketchbook but on the smaller ones he's taught us that we can make references to textures or anything and everything that someone who wants to learn as much as they can about drawing but we can't always remember everything we put on paper and he taught in a video to simply have a book for making reference sketches. I am subbed and will stay, his channel is great. Thank you for your help and continued guides :) One other great thing is that his sessions are comfortable, I don't feel the need to already be a highly talented artist where I still have a lot to learn but even though you are very talented and know your complex forms/ anatomy and shadings the one really great thing is I don't feel "oh shit" this is way over my head, you make a very comfortable study guide. I do have lots to learn in regards to complex forms and how to draw certain kinds of things considering foreshortening but hopefully that will happen in time. Again, great work as I'm glad to have found your channel.
I really needed this. Some of my art looks just off and shading was why. It was almost overwhelming when I was trying to do it before but now it feels good because I have a logical way to deal with everything. Very kewl.
Sorry Alphonso maybe I am too dunb but it wasn't ver clear to me. I get that there is a light-medium and shadow side but I didn't get how the minor forma relate to the major forms that you explained at 5:00 So any minor form in the light side will have weaker shadows? Minor forms in the medium tone will never go as dark as the shadow side Minor forms in th Shadow side willl never have a light side? Thannk you for your help!
***** Precisely...Not that they CANT or that you'll NEVER see it, buts its for the sake of consistency in your drawing...it just look better, alot better..in fact, do the opposite and see what happens to prove it to yourself :-)
I have followed your tutorials for some time with interest. And now I simply had to order 2 of your books: pen and ink, and workbook. Looking forward to be able to learn more from you. You have such a good way to make the complicated easy to understand. Like in this video. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge 😃
Alphonso, all your videos are of great value, not only for the pencil/pen&ink artist, but also for the painter. It gives valuable information for the artist wanting to paint realistically from imagination. Here a question regarding the "light direction" to consider to shade minor forms within any major planes. Let's say I draw an object composed of two major planes: a major plane n°1 (facing the light => light tone on paper), and a major plane n°2 (opposite the light, thus in shadow => darker tone on paper). Whenever I add a minor form on my major plane n°1, then I shade this minor form according to the light source hitting major plane n°1. But when I add a minor form on my major plane n°2, which is in shadow, what is the light source to consider to shade this minor form ? As major plane n°2 is already on shadow, the main light source is not hitting that plane.
Oh ok. Then you just shade it volumetrically. Meaning you just shade it as if its receiving ambient light or you can shade it as if the light is hitting it from the same direction as the major plane in light
Thanks Alphonso. That makes sense. I also sometimes consider the reflected light (when any is present) as a "second" light source coming opposite direction from the main light source. Thus I shade my minor forms with that source of light. But it can get confusing and too "complicated" at some point ... Shading things volumetrically in shadow areas makes things consistent and easier to deal with.
I have a question regarding planes and contours. My understanding is that an outline shows the edges of a form, a plane depicts the sides of an object. A contour depicts the volume of an object at a certain area. Contour lines are usually curva-linear in shape, but how would you depict the contour lines on a solid object with straight edges, like a box? I am just trying to really understand how each of these concepts work independently and then at certain places overlap. I am trying to draw from life and I think that a clear understanding of these concepts would greatly help me.
Socrates without contours you cant perceive planes. I think you should think more about the subject or object rather than try to separate concepts like contour and planes...think of contour(lines) as what forms outlines and planes are the actual shapes or outlines formed. Planes then may suggest 3D, but they are all in service of representing volume.
this is like a class in its self thank you so much this has helped me so much, Very helpful with actual art terms and functions :) what to see and how it incorporate it .

So basically, your gray areas are going to have the most shading detail, while your light and dark areas are going to have some detail, but much less than the middle grey am I right?
Awesome thanks! I hope you don't mind answering questions, I can stop if it annoys you haha. You're just a fantastic teacher and I learn better when I ask questions for things I'm confused on.
Alright here is one more for you. If what I've been learning about figure proportions is right, you can split an 8 head figure into 8 separate slices which each have a major landmark of the body that falls on (or slightly above/below) them. How would I do this for a 7 head figure, or a 9 head figure, or figures in between (like 7 1/2 or 8 1/2)? Do I just have to learn the different proportions for each one? I've been really baffled by this one because I can't seem to find a good answer to this question.
whats the reason behind finding different proportion systems? A system of proportion comes much easier when its a solution to a problem...for example average person is said to be about 7 1/2 to 7/34 heads high...this creates a figure with a larger head in relation to the rest of the figure than the 8+ headed figure. So it is believed that 8+ headed figure creates an "ideal" figure that is believed to be more aesthetically pleasing. It also results in an elongated torso and longer legs, more "evened out" proportions. So it goes back to, whats your goal? Are you trying to create an "ideal," a realistic, etc. figure? All else will fall into place, you can put the landmarks where you want :-)
Wow. This is by far the best shading tutorial I've come across.
Trrncwilliamson thanks much :-)
yes it really is. other channels or websites don’t really explain it really well. i have no idea why 🤔🤷♂️

I don't understand, in your previous tutorials about shading, you said we have to put a darker zone to limit the area between light and shadon. And here, you come dark to the light.
