Only twice in my life have I walked out of a movie theater immediately realizing I had just witnessed greatness: 1) Goodfellas (1990), and 2) Heat (1995).
I saw Heat and couldn’t stop thinking about it because of how it made me feel. I’ve seen it multiple times, and carefully watch over every scene. It’s my favorite film. Thank you, Michael Mann.
@@highwaystar3780 Boring for you, most people don't find it boring and he has made several great films like Thief, The last of the mohicans, Collateral, The insider.
Heat is a fine, fine movie, look forward to reading the book... I never dreamed that I would love the Insider but I absolutely did, it had an emotional heart way beyond the fairly bland premise. (A big part was probably Lisa Gerrard providing the score, around the same time as Gladiator. On a further side note, the fact that Crowe played Wigand just before he played Maximus was also an astonishing transformation)
He knows his medium so well. In his movies, there are scenes that are breathtaking to behold, action scenes that are visceral and grounded in the plot, and logical, engaging storytelling. He has many masterpieces, but Last of the Mohicans is remarkable. It seems to have been summoned forth by magic.

One of my favorite directors. His vis on film is amazing when using HD cameras a la Roger Deakins. Two favorite films of his, Collateral and Miami Vice. The night scenes are amazing with so much detail according to the commentary. The fight scene in Collateral was insane. Also, loved Manhunter with the younger William Peterson in the role. You can almost taste a hint of tv Miami Vice in that film. There are certain directors you watch their films because of how well they are (Ridley Scott, Denis Villeneavue??), Mann is one of them.
"Heat" was an amazing film! Michael Mann is a phenomenal director! Anything he makes is well worth a look! Looking forward to "Heat 2" if he decides to make it to a movie!
I wasn't expecting much from Heat 2, but what an extraordinary piece of work it turned out to be. There are many subplots in seperate timeframes that can be a little difficult to keep straight, but Mann's vivid storytelling and the depth of his characterizations far surpasses any minor structural confusion.
@@alexanderreyes1081 I kinda misspoke, I meant it doesn't need to be elaborated on. the whole movie was about al Pacinos character defeating his shadow self, you don't really need any more info
The book is absolutely fabulous. I get the hesitation, but let me say it does not disappoint. It brings so much life to the characters and their stories. Mann details the characters origins with a fine tooth comb. Some of the chapters have you feeling like your back at the LA street shootout. Definitely worth it. Chris and Charlene have a beautiful origin story.
Heat was/is an absolute master piece and timeless classic ... 50yrs from now it will still hold up against some of the silver screens finest productions!
I first saw Heat when I was about 15 and found it boring. A few years later rewatched it and found it masterful! It really is a sophisticated, intelligent, and incredible film
It’s absolutely one of the best films ever made and one of my favorites. But Pacino was better in The Godfather films, Dog Day Afternoon, and Scarface.
That's tough, I would put Heat as Deniros 2nd best after Taxi Driver and Pacino's 3rd best after Scarface and The Godfather part 2 but I've no problem with someone putting Heat at the top. What a masterpiece and no movie released after 2000 comes close to Heat.
Heat was fantastic and should have won the Oscar - for me, it, Thief, and Goodfellas are the top three movies in that genre! Michael Mann does an outstanding job overall, with added kudos for sound and treatment of the night!
From the moment I saw his first film Thief in 1981 I knew Mann was one to watch. Now more than 40 years later I have grown up watching Michael Mann movies. Not a single dud, more often than not they are brilliant, and only seem to get better with age.
Love Michael Mann's work, especially Heat, Collateral, The Insider, Last of The Mohicans. I'm annoyed with Seth Doane's questioning Mann if he feels any responsibility about violence in America because he makes violent movies. It's just such a cheap shot, cliché question for film directors. Mann answered it perfectly by citing the fact that his style of filmmaking is not gratuitous at all. Mann is probably one of the most responsible, thoroughly researched filmmakers out there. This is well known. He doesn't do things for cheap effect. It's deliberately done with integrity because his style is to portray realism and authenticity. It's so lame when interviewers seem to want to provoke drama or elicit guilt in their subjects to sell their interview even if it's blatantly unwarranted. You might as well ask a Director if they feel responsible for all the corruption in the world because their films have a lot of corrupt characters. Lol. It's ridiculous.
It is very annoying. I remember the rumors that this movie may have influenced the 1997 North Hollywood Bank Robbery/Shootout and other movies like Reservoir Dogs, Leon The Professional, etc were in the media's crosshairs

My favourite director. I love Heat and watch it at least once every year. The book is must read for me. I hope we get more crime dramas from Mann in the future.
Bringing back Val Kilmer for a sequel would be amazing right now the way his character survived a gun shot to the neck…with Val’s voice the way it is now due to his medical condition…it would be perfect!

There are lots of vibrant, energetic and intelligent seniors who have the ability to contribute and create. Anyone, at any age, can drop dead or become incapacitated at a moments notice. Bravo to Michael Mann for living life fully!
