Got to meet him myself around 2006 or so, back when he co-owned a fine dining restaurant in Lake Forest, Illinois with his son, Jay (his eldest son, the one who was in the naval academy, as seen in the movie), a restaurant that has sadly been closed for almost a decade now; a shame, too, as it had really good food, and their green apple martinis were the best I ever had. Whenever Jim Lovell himself (called The Captain by the restaurant staff) was in the area, he would stop by the restaurant to greet the patrons. We ended up chatting for a few minutes, and I got to shake his hand and have my picture taken with him. He was the first (and most legendary) astronaut I ever met, and a personal hero of mine. Even when he wasn't there, the place was a real treat to visit. The restaurant had memorabilia of Jim's Navy and NASA days, especially down in the lower lounge area, where you could have after-dinner drinks and cigars (this being a time when Illinois still allowed smoking indoors, before they banned it in 2008). There were also photographs of some of the characters from the movie on the walls, as well. And the painting that served as the inspiration for the mission insignia hung in the front lobby. I had heard that Jay had opened up a new restaurant in Highwood, Illinois, but I have not been there yet. And I don't know if Jim himself ever visits, or if any of his memorabilia adorns the place. But if I ever get the chance to go, you will be certain I will do it.
I truly feel that amongst hundreds of astronauts there are none that compare to James Arthur Lovell Jr. The perfect level of intelligence, courageousness, modesty, wit, wisdom, and 'The right stuff'. When the Apollo program ended in 1972 Lovell was the only American astronaut who had flow in space FOUR times.
I remember the Apollo 13 mission very well when I was in the Navy. A true act of heroism and resolve. I also grew up during the project Mercury years and had a couple favorite astronauts of the original 7 but Jim Lovell surplanted that a long time ago. A true hero and great guy. Hand salute Capt. Lovell.
Unbelievable how all these incredible guys kept their cool through this VERY dangerous situation. You listen to the mission tapes, even at the most dramatic moments, you pert near fall asleep. Professionalism the like of which doesn't seem to exist in the world in these degenerate times. I have so much respect for these fellows.
This is one of the main reasons that NASA chose test pilots as their astronauts. These are men that are used to being in literal untested craft (because THEY are the ones testing them), so their jobs were already to operate craft nobody had operated before, and report problems calmly, etc.
My dog is named after his fellow Apollo 13 astronaut, Fred Haise. He was a stray and a shelter dog before I rescued him, his birthday is April 17th, the same day Apollo 13 returned to earth safely. They'd named him Fred at the shelter and I thought it was appropriate because like Apollo 13, Fred's life started out as a disaster but he made a miraculous recovery with a little help.
For those who didn't catch it, Jim Lovell had a cameo in the movie; he played the captain of the recovery ship where we see the astronauts exiting the helicopter. Tom Hanks shakes hands with him during that scene.
Jim Lovell is probably the most Personable of all the Astronauts. At the time of Apollo 13, he had the most Time in Space of all the Astronauts/Cosmonauts

True! Kevin Costner was actually Jim Lovell's suggestion when he first became involved in the project. It turned out brilliantly though, Tom Hanks is a space buff himself, so he truly had the appreciation and interest for the program (Apollo program). That's why he and Ron Howard made "From Earth To The Moon" on HBO a few years after Apollo 13 together.

Not Tom Hanks but he does resemble Kevin Costner!
Most people who watched the movie have no idea what Jim Lovell looked like. The role was cast based on acting ability; not resemblance to the person they are portraying.
He really doesn’t look 96. Good genes, I suppose.
Well....he's not 96 in this video. They are talking about the movie Apollo 13 - you know - when it came out - almost 30 years ago...

Anyone else did the post-Conan death check?
I'm guessing Jordan saw the Russia Lunar-25 Crash news and decided to upload a lunar-landing clip
i think he's a earned a little more respect than "post-interview death check"
@@noizz4 But Apollo 13 didn't land on the moon...
He sounds like norm
He sounds a bit like Tom Hanks
Watching this i realise how obviously insecure and unpolished Conan was in his early talk show host days. He polished up significantly over the years.. kinda.
Friendly advice. Never travel with Tom!
someone on UA-cam came up with the idea that it should have been Kevin Costner not Tom Hanks that played Jim Lovell. I think that would have been a brilliant casting decision.
NO! Kevin Costner has the flattest affect and his acting is wooden.

Hi people ... we have here in our midst a genius poet who is smarter then Isaac Newton...
@80sbeginner _there is no such thing as "outer space" 'cause the heliocentric model is rubbish.
to disprove the heliocentric model you don't need to talk about NASA and you don't need to talk about "outer space".
all one has to do is talk about the false equation of Newton's second law.
anyone who wants to have a mature conversation about Newton's second law is welcome to respond to me.
