Those old masters just had this way with the vibrato and portamento. Just stunning. So much to learn from just listening. We've gotten so rigid in our requirements for time and expression in the modern era. This kind of performance brings the spice, the pizazz, the kind of statement that lulls into a dream.
It's a wonderful recording, one of my all-time faves. But listening to the whole piece just now, I feel that the last movement doesn't quite hold together with this tempo. And also it doesn't capture the spirit of it -- Presto agitato. It's missing that agitated quality that needs to drive it to the very end. I feel the piece as a whole needs this component in the last movement otherwise it just doesn't quite work.
