This is Baker Knight. The background effects were added to give the record a Johnny Rivers-type sound, as he was having success at the time with "Memphis" and "Maybelline"
Sounds a bit like Kenny Owens - Long lost john . This was written by Baker Knight & he recorded stuff himself in the 50's .( Bring my Cadillac Back. On Spinning records . could even be him singing .
Hi marcus...i love this Band for many Years.Maybe you have this one...on Gators Record J.B.and the Moonshine Boozers "Boom Boom etc.Killer, have good Fun and keep Rockin Peter
Now Darlene used to love me And I know she loved me so But then one night I took her to the whiskey A Go-Go We stood there in the corner where the lights were low and dim Well then and there is where my baby lerned to do the swim Oh Darlene, Darlene Tell me what you gonna do You know that rock and roll music Sure has got a hold on you Well she went on got some records and she played 'em all night long She learned to do the swim to every single little song She went on up to 'Frisco to the condor by the bay And now when Darlene does the swim they carry folks away Oh Darlene, Darlene Tell me what you gonna do (Darlene) I said that rock and roll music Sure has got a hold on you (Oh rock out baby) Well every night she swimming down right up there on the stage Let me tell you sweet Darlene is now the latest craze When the band is playin' boy she really knocks 'em dead People have to stop and put their eyes back in their heads Oh Darlene, Darlene Aw tell me what you gonna do You know that rock and roll music Sure has got a hold on you All that fame and fortune's gone to your head Well look at her swimming up there on that stage torturing me! Oh well you know what I mean You're doing so much swimming Imma learn to be a life guard Yeah somebody gonna have to bring you back to shore Oh c'mon
Another thing that gives it away this is mid 60s is toward the end, where the last verse was doing that Standells "grumbling/talking under his breath" thing, lol. Greatness
Awesome song, but i can not find anything on this Jack Southern?? I know Baker Knight wrote the song....but did he also sing it?? Or did he write it for this Jack Southern??
they are the same person....one version had the annoying gals talking in the background, the other was released under Baker Knight without the added girls in the background...
It’s definitely late rockabilly and garage. A song can fall into more than one genre? Call it Garage-a billy then. It’s sloppy, sleazy, has the southern hiccup, southern draw, and a seriously heavy dose of R&B.
Early era go go very 1965 or so as distinct from the 70's disco with its latino element. Another example of early go go era is the youngblood with "Grizzly bear".
It’s classified as Rockabilly and someone on this thread described as ‘a great bopper’ which I can sort of visualise given the vocals and guitar however I personally wouldn’t call it Rockabilly , it’s more raw garage 60’s RnB with someone playing a lo-fi organ which wasn’t an instrument associated with original Rockabilly recordings.
I love that background voice, great rhythm, hell yeah!!!!
Wicked recording.
Love listening to this incredible Rocker.
Unstopable! Killer track!
This is Baker Knight. The background effects were added to give the record a Johnny Rivers-type sound, as he was having success at the time with "Memphis" and "Maybelline"
Love this, not sure if its Rockabilly, sounds like its from the mid 60s blues thing , still great 👍
Right! It ain’t Rockabilly at all!
It belongs to that intermediate style from the early sixties. Think Johnny Rivers and all.
I'd call it psychedelic rockabilly
We play it in the rockin scene to bop to In the UK

Now Darlene used to love me
And I know she loved me so
But then one night I took her to the whiskey A Go-Go
We stood there in the corner where the lights were low and dim
Well then and there is where my baby lerned to do the swim
Oh Darlene, Darlene
Tell me what you gonna do
You know that rock and roll music
Sure has got a hold on you
Well she went on got some records and she played 'em all night long
She learned to do the swim to every single little song
She went on up to 'Frisco to the condor by the bay
And now when Darlene does the swim they carry folks away
Oh Darlene, Darlene
Tell me what you gonna do (Darlene)
I said that rock and roll music
Sure has got a hold on you
(Oh rock out baby)
Well every night she swimming down right up there on the stage
Let me tell you sweet Darlene is now the latest craze
When the band is playin' boy she really knocks 'em dead
People have to stop and put their eyes back in their heads
Oh Darlene, Darlene
Aw tell me what you gonna do
You know that rock and roll music
Sure has got a hold on you
All that fame and fortune's gone to your head
Well look at her swimming up there on that stage torturing me!
Oh well you know what I mean
You're doing so much swimming Imma learn to be a life guard
Yeah somebody gonna have to bring you back to shore
Oh c'mon
Thx for doing that! 👍
Thank you
The only correction to your lyrics is "I took her to the Whiskey A Go-Go" (which is a long-standing bar on Sunset BLVD in West Hollywood)

Can anyone give me recommendations for songs like this? I am new to this kind of genre of music so I don’t know much. Though I like it a lot! Thanks!
Charlie Feathers
I suggest "Well, I'm Weak" by Eddie Stapleton, and "Mean Mean Woman" by the Twisters. Those are two of my favorites.

ROCKABILLY IT AIN'T! - 1960s POP more like!
Can someone please tell me the lyrics?
Thnks it aint R-A-Billy,sort of stuff P.J.Proby(Jett Powers) sang/played when he arrived in the UK.
I wish there was a version without the annoying background vocals.
I love the wild, cool chick in the back. She pushes the song's energy up a notch.
Here is the same song with-out the talking..... ;)
Same artist different name. Baker Knight wrote the song.

Why do clueless people call every record rockabilly. Rollin stones comes to mind.
Painted black 😂😂😂
Sounds like the song the stones sang on a TV advert. New insignia for that one all over smell.🤣🤣🤣
This sounds more like 60s SoCal garage rock.
It's certainly not rockabilly.
Its not Rockabilly, its great Rock n Roll...
I agree it's not rockabilly. Has some of the sound of the early Rolling Stones bluesy material.
This ain't Rockabilly... More like 60s pop...
Sound like the Kinks
I don't know how.
ow
Great track but not rockabilly.Bit of Rolling Stones early vibe here,Johnny Rivers too, good rhythm and blues.
Great song, but it's not remotely rockabilly.
This aint rockabilly
This is not rockabilly.
Tampoco es rockabilly Bird doggin de Gene Vincent, pero es una canción histórica y maravillosa.Wonderfull Bird Doggin,Marvelous.
This is Real Bullshit..yäääää🤪
Es más cercano al swamp rock
L + Small pompadour + broken hot rod + busted jukebox + no dolly + your not a cool cat + ratio
Sounds like mick jag. Definitely not rockabilly who names every record on you tube a rockabilly record. Clueless on you tube.
The Doors could've covered the crap outta this.
Thats bullshit🤪not rockabilly
Arguing about what is or isnt technically Rockabilly is extreme loser behavior.
This is killer whatever it is.
This is amazing! But it's not really rockabilly... sounds more like beat music.
You're not from around here , are you , boy ??
