As you found, slotting the cap doesn't change the timing. It DOES help INDEX the cap if that is needed to prevent cross fire. I could see it being used on 1980's cars with radical timing due to dual pickups for smog stuff. If the burn marks are at the leading or trailing edge of an aluminum contact distributor cap's contents, that is a hint it could be indexed. Cutting view holes in and old cap and putting the timing light on the cap with the engine running can see which way you might want to index it. Clear caps help on this. You could section a cap and but it on with the engine off and put the no 1 piston at TDC to get a rough idea, too.
As for the vacuum advance, there is none at idle since it is Ported, rather than Manifold.
Assuming you used the recommended port on the carb. Rev it up and see if you feel vacuum coming from the hose. Also, put some suction on the vacuum port on the distributor and see if the plate moves. Or see if the diaphragm is leaking vacuum inside the can.
Moving the wires on the cap is going to change your spark timing 360/8 = 45 degrees at the distributor = 90 degrees at the crank. So, not an option.
Why don't you put a socket on the crank and rotate the engine back and forth and watch the inside of the distributor to see how much slack you have in the timing chain?
I have heard of guys taking a fuel pump from one common engine and having the arm replaced to make if fit on an engine type where no replacement fuel pumps are available. But your pump was working fine for now.

@@Sleeperdude Yes. All cars from around 1960-72 that I know of have it on ported ( only when throttle is open), You must have had it on a manifold vacuum port. Which, as you saw, give too much timing at idle.
And make it hard to set the timing or mixture screws.
You, on ported vacuum, should have had zero vacuum at idle and moderate vacuum when you rev it up. (From 73 to 85 they use both ports and a bunch of valves and solenoids to balance between them. )
Use the suction test on the vacuum can before you hook up the hose. If it won't hold a vacuum, replace the can. I got just the can for about 20 dollars at the parts store (for a different old car).
As for those windows, I have to believe the vent windows and the main windows use different fuses, and relay and circuit breaker. You need the wiring diagram from the Factory Service Manual FSM to find them in the car.
Sometimes some enthusiast car sites have PDF files of the FSM or at least the wiring diagrams.
The full wheel covers look good. Just put a bit of white rustolem on the spots missing paint. I had the white last a couple of years on a car sitting outside when the other colors just peeled off or faded off.
OK here is a redneck tip. Use propane to replace the missing R12 and see if you can get the AC charged up. It works so well they have a conspiracy to make you think it doesn't. No it isn't dangerous. Every car in Germany and most structures use propane/butane or similar. The overpriced Dupont monopoly trash we use is prohibited over there. I will delete this last paragraph after you read it. :)
My bud and I customized one these once...it was one of the most expensive customizations ever. There is nothing cheap about those parts. Believe it or not the Mark III was cheaper to rebuild. Great job on this old beast...

I don't know if you put a filter screen back on the fuel sending boot but if you didn't, you can always put one of those extra in line fuel filters.They are only a couple bucks and easy change. BTW, I think car has the tilt wheel and it would be on the turn signal lever.

Viewing from Europe, this is hysterical , i remember watching 'The clampits' aa a kid, I love how Americans dont care what they look like ,sound like or drive around in. unlike us who are constantly concerned about 'status'
Really glad to hear you still have the Lincoln. The '66 my dad bought from my uncle had an exhaust manifold leak. My uncle was a mechanic and I spent a few Saturdays one summer helping him take apart the engine to replace the gasket. The car also had an aftermarket electric fuel pump that was a problem it was replaced with the correct fuel pump. This was back in the early '80s and after it was fixed it was such a cool car for me to drive to school in the 11th grade. Brings back great memories. Looking forward to your next episode with the Lincoln!

My 1966 2 door Lincoln had the 460 and it overheated all the time. Finally installed an electric fan and solved that issue completely. That engine ran as sooth as glass. Loved it. 1966 I think was the last year with all the chrome plastered throughout the interior.

I had a 53 Lincoln Capri Red and Black. two door hardtop. 375 hp would cruse at high speed in cruse control and got 25 mpg without fail. Drove all over the west when I was in the Navy. Great Cars. lpo

That's one of my all time favorite cars. My uncle had a black Continental with the suicide doors that was amazing back in the day but fell victim to living in the northeast...that was unfortunate. It's a dream car but I'd need to expand my garage.

You asked about the speedometer design, it operates with a drum similar to the Ford model A but it’s mounted horizontally and runs the length of the lens across the instrument cluster so that a red bar indicates the speed. Almost like a thermometer. It’s pretty neat for 1960’s technology. One more thought, liberal amounts of vaseline will moisturize the leather seat covers just as well as fancy conditioners. It’s also the main component in dielectric compound sold for battery terminals.

That is a nice one. I agree, it would be cool to see what that one was like when it was new. For getting rust off the bumpers, I have recently been adding some PB Blaster to the steel wool. It seems to remove it easier and leaves a little protection for the rusty spots. Give it a try and see what you think.

Thought you might like to know, to remove rust from chrome, Coca Cola and Aluminum foil wad. Used it on extremely rusty Ford pickup front bumper. Rinsed with water and sprayed down with WD-40 no results! Also, to remove smudges and surface rust from paint, scratch free scouring pad and Barbasol or cheaper shave cream. Some tougher rust, cheap tooth paste. (surface rust, rust from another item deposited on paint) also rubbing compound or clay bar. Like your lifestyle. Good family man and Christian. I'm 86yo and love old cars. Some of my favorites: 31 mod A Ford, 40 Ford convertible, 47 Lincoln Cont. 51 Ford Victotia, 58 Pontiac Bonneville convertible, 63 Volvo P80, 77 Volvo 240. My absolute favorite 1937 Packard Roadster. I now drive a 1990 Volvo 740 LE DOHC. Keep up the good work and I'll keep on watching. Thanks

From someone who rode and drove one new, it was like you never left your living room sofa. Here is the thing , you are in possession of a rare bird because those cars were junk from the factory, always and I do mean always ,something wrong with them. The cheaper (less options) on the Ford or Mercury the better off you were. Lincoln’s were loaded with options. A friend had a 67 convertible, now there is trouble. In weighs in at 6300 lbs. and if the top goes down and stores itself in the trunk, God just performed a miracle. All my pops family were Ford die hards but I became a Cadillac die hard. Brought my first one at age 16, A well used and abused 58 Fleetwood. It had 158000 or so miles and still was very quite and would cruise down the road at 90 mph and never get out of breath, if you could keep that ethyl gas in it. It was not a go on a date car. Love your channel you are lucky in many ways. God Bless!

That distributer stuck in there is gonna mess you up. It took several tries to get mine out of the 70 Thunderbird. I took it to a mechanic that had the torch, he finally got it out and set it correctly and rebuilt the carburetor. Wish I never sold it. Now on the hunt for a 70 or 71.

@@Sleeperdude Check to make sure but im pretty sure that has the same distributor as an FE. 352,360, 390 ect. So if it does you can get a little uh aggressive getting it loose since FE distributors are easy to find
The reason you are having trouble with the timing is you need to get the base of the distributor moving. Just moving the cap the points are still going off at the original time point and the cap is not letting it send the spark out correctly. So get that base moving and good luck and God bless

Yes. Timing is the moment the points open. For that reason having the points gap set too wide will advance the timing (slightly) as they start to open too soon. So check the gap before setting the timing, if you get that base moving.
Yes and unhooking the vacuum only pulls timing under acceleration
@@M_Phipps0520 There are 2 types ported and manifold vacuum.
Ported advances the timing when you open the throttles due to a stronger signal above the butterfly's and the manifold vacuum drops.
Manifold vacuum advances the timing during cruise when the manifold vacuum is high and retards during excel when the manifold vacuum drops.
Disconnecting the vacuum on both setups will eliminate the advance .
From the description that car is set up with ported vacuum not a real good setup running off manifold vacuum is much better.
You get the advance at cruise for mileage with manifold vacuum and it drops under acceleration to reduce ping.
But the distributor has to be recurved to use it that way.
Some had dual vacuum advance pots trying to get the best of both versions at the same time.
So glad Rocky showed up to inspect your brake work 👍. Brakes, carbs, interior quality control.. that goat knows it all 😂
Had a friend in High School who had this same car same year and body style who rebuilt the thing back from the ground up Him and his Dad,,Painted it black and tinted the windows a Dark green,,So many coats of black and clear coat youd yhink it was always wet,,Killer looking car And all the chrome was redone,,They were great looking cars

Back from about 1960 on it was my job to wash and wax and vacuum out the car every Saturday morning, My Dad was a car guy so his had to look sharp, Those white walls cleaned up spotless with either Comet or Ajax and a 1"x3" stiff bristle brush, and for the worst case I had an SOS pad to remove the black marks because my Mother drove by the Braille System. I really hated it when Mom tried to parallel park. I could pull off the fender skirts in nothing flat so I could get to the whole wheel. And my Dad loved pure paste wax, I wasn't as big a fan. Keep up the good work

Watching the gas coming from the pump made me think of my dad. He always said when you start to gas a Lincoln up you need to kill the engine so the station pump will catch up with it. I understand many of those cars got eight miles per gallon on the highway.

Moving the cap only will not change the points dwell.Dwell changes timing, timing doesn't change dwell. You always do dwell first then set timing.

Had a 65 Ford Galaxy. Great car. Had a 289. You guessed it about engine miss. The right bank spark plug wires sat on exhaust manifold. Would burn wire then changed them . Would last for a thousand miles then had to change the wire. No place to hang them. Love your videos.

The window and seat motors in 60's cars are usually serviceable. I pulled my 67 Cadillacs apart cleaned them up. Cleaning grease film off the commutator fixed some, others the plug ends rusted off so I soldered new wire ends. Then I cleaned the plugs to the switches and popped apart the switches themselves (careful of the small springs) cleaned them. Also, use caution when removing window motors wedge windows from falling. The mechanism can cut your fingers off or trap you, there are heavy springs to aid in lifting the heavy glass. It's best to have others hold the window so it can't move while you remove and install the motors. saved me buying 8 window motors.

My daddy used to own a silver 67 Lincoln continental. When I was Ralphie's age I used to sit in the back seat while going down the road.I would look through the hood ornament like they were crosshairs and pretend to shoot other cars as if they were the enemy. lol.

The last time I heard the word casings was dealing with recaps. The rest of us call them tires. Welcome to the world of luxury cars. I've 18 Cadillacs and 3 Lincolns. Bought every one of the dirt cheap.

Another great classic. Have ya'll ever been to the ginormous town of Chucky Tennessee? When I was there in the 80's it had a huge population of 120. That's where my family tree started. I believe I'm the last leaf on that tree.
For the distributor, there is a tool to yank it out. It is like a hammer puller. I had one in my toolbox for years! It has two horseshoes that clamp under the distributor & just hit the hammer up & it will pull it out.
