This part is my favorite moment in Rick Steve's European Christmas Special. There is nothing more beautiful than these young, talented girls! The hymn "Long Ago Prophets Knew" with the harp accompaniment and candle-lit atmosphere is divine. The perfect presentation of the coming of Christmas! Thank you, Rick.
For anyone wondering, the song the Norwegian Girls Choir is singing is called “Personent Hodie” arr. by John Rutter. Absolutely beautiful arrangement and performance.
I love Santa Luzia! She protects my eyes to see so many beautiful things nature gives me. Thank you Santa Luzia and always bless my eyes, Santa Luzia! Amen!
I stayed in Drøbak in 2009 to visit my cousin Randi who lives there, so I am quite familiar with this town... Oddly enough, I met Rick Steeves on Christmas Eve at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lynnwood, WA as he was doing the reading. We had a nice discussion about filming this episode :-)
Beautiful country. Beautiful people. Love the kransekake. And the marzipan pigs. The fjords are something you need to see in person. I think it's time to go back and visit.
Europe really does it nice 4 Christmases...U does a fantastic great job ...I love it...just wish I could visit and be there to see it all....greetings Kansas USA 🇺🇸 👏🏼 👍🏾 😀 🙌🏾
He says "julenisse", not "jule nisse". If a word sounds compound when you pronouncing the word, it should be written together. If there are abbreviations, proper names or numbers in the word, hyphens should be used. This was a short lesson in Norwegian!
I love that song so very much. Can anyone out there tell me the name of it? I would very much appreciate it ❤ Also, let's send good wishes off to Rick Steves who underwent surgery not too long ago for prostate cancer. Best wishes and speedy recovery to you, Steve ❤
Me too! God willing! I will sit in the back of that old church and be mesmerized with all the wonderful and beautiful sounds and sights. I will think that I am dreaming a heavenly dream hoping I won't wake up from it.
I’m want to have trip to this country 🇳🇴✝️❤️ love this people and this country thean mony counters in Europe in this vilage is very beautiful ❤️✝️ god bless Norway 🇳🇴 ✝️❤️
growing up, our mom used to bake a special Greek bread with a quarter hidden in it every Christmas. Person who found it was supposed to have good luck in the New Year. But unfortunately in our ultra competive family, it usually meant fist fights, broken furniture and the freshly baked bread rendered into bread crumbs, that our mom threw outside for the birds to eat. LOL!!! GOOD TIMES
Too bad you can't see any snow in this video :( Drøbak is so far south and near the coast that snow doesn't arrive before january-february. Snow is really important in Norway, especially around Christmas.
Yes, would please tell me the name of the song the Girl's Choir was singing at the end of the clip. It was abosolutely amazing. They had voices as Angels would sing. Completely breathtaking and phenominal... Also may I add that every clip I see In relation to Norway there is always a sense of great national pride, and for a lack of better word they seem very folkish or very much steeped in their tradition. I'm blown away. I hope to visit this beautifal country someday...
Please Rick, what is the name of the beautiful piece the young maidens sing towards the end of this segment... it is haunting and I would love to get an arrangement of it! Please if anyone knows, share!
M McAdoo This episode is where I first encountered that beautiful medieval carol, and I've been captivated ever since. It sounds best when it's sung in Latin. The English version somehow is lacking.
Person: We are in *tries to pronounce place' Me (A Norwegian): Come again? Video: *shows overview and letters saying Drobak Me: OH, Drøbak.... wow that was a horrible pronounciation XD
I know no families that hang up mistletoe. If someone does, it's probably something they learned from watching American sitcoms... and the Christmas tree is not a pagan remnant, silly, it's a fairly new tradition (from Germany in the 1850, like most of our Christmas tradition). But the hidden almond is real.

The hymn is also known as: On This Day Earth Shall Ring.

Beautiful singing. Such grace.
Wonderful singing by the young girls , absolutely beautiful . A joy to hear .

I am norwgian, and this is so entertaining! Specialy when you says "jule nisse"!
He says "julenisse", not "jule nisse".

Nice to know all these wonderful Christmas traditions in Norway ...
You have to wonder, who are the dark souls who gave this video a "thumbs down"? Happy Santa Lucia Day, 2018!
Sad liberal social justice warriors.
And 2020! Love this!
I agree! I'm from Sweden, similar to Norway in many ways, and, I have a feeling, also to Canada!
Happy holidays!
Norway is a Beautiful place. Someday I will go to Norway in the Christmas. If God wants!!! ;D
Me too! God willing! I will sit in the back of that old church and be mesmerized with all the wonderful and beautiful sounds and sights.

It's called Personent Hodie. I agree, it's absolutely beautiful (and one of my favorite Christmas carols!)
OK, NOW I know what they were singing during that performance in Oslo. That by the way is my FAV performance of Rick Steves' European Xmas.
Can I know the name of the song which they sung in the ending?
Beautiful. Someday I will go to Norway in the Christmas. If God wants!!! ;D
Mycket bra föreställning :)
My Grandpa Torger was from Oslo.. I need to go ASAP !!!
Torgeir*
I'm watching this on Santa Lucia day!
Im going to Norway because of this
I'd kill to spend December in Scandinavia one year.
Please Rick, what is the name of the beautiful piece the young maidens sing towards the end of this segment... it is haunting and I would love to get an arrangement of it! Please if anyone knows, share!
Personent Hodie
Personent Hodie :)
I felt the SAME way - loved that gorgeous sound and researched the piece to get and add to my Christmas collection.
M McAdoo This episode is where I first encountered that beautiful medieval carol, and I've been captivated ever since. It sounds best when it's sung in Latin. The English version somehow is lacking.
I agree. I've searched high and low but cannot find an arrangement quite as hauntingly beautiful as this one.
I love it!!!!!
since when was fjøs nisser Santa, they are not the same thing they might share the name of nisse but they are not the same
Beautiful video.
Like Disney Animated Movie in 2013 film?
Too bad that you came there in a time with no snow... We won´t get the Christmas spirit without

But the hidden almond is real.
The hidden Almond is Heathen, not pagan, pagan is a Latin word...
I am norwegian, and not every one goes ti churge in christmas.
Julia Vins Fan hold kjeft du kan ikke ordentlig engelsk
Even hold kjeft du er en dust
Julia Vins Fan even people go to church , that is most for tradition.
You are smarter than sweden. And keep be smart!
I prefer a big fat joint for christmas rather than beer ....
I wouldn't say it's that common to gather in church, it used to be, but not today.
It is still. For decent people
@@perperson199 decent people dont look down on others. judge not for ye shall be judged eller
Loving those blondes. Lots of love to Norway
The real root! God jule!
Norwegians singing Santa Lucia (?)
it's not just swedish.. they do it in Finland and Denmark as well i guess.
Santa Lucia is part of all Scandinavian Countries's tradition :)
St. Lucia = light. It was a way to mask the celebration of the winter solstice and the coming of more light and life in spring and summer.
👎👎👎👎👎👎
JESUS BASTRED = GOLDAN CLAF SON OF PANDIRA ROMAN SOLDIER
No People of Color? How sad.
It's not sad. We have many from Asia, Africa, India but we do not have African Americans - it's just normal
Aren't they all atheists? I'm surprised to see packed churches in Norway
