I cut a block of wood & sanded to just the right height to shove under the clamp...works better...don't have to pull the clamp every time,,,pull out block & flip as designed.
I highly doubt in a blind test you could tell the difference between a knife sharpened with and without that stabilizing block. That movement is so minimal as to the effective sharpness, the effective functionality.
I don't own this stabilizing block so can't comment on whether or not it is an improvement ... but I disagree about the movement being minimal. The movement/flexibility of this poorly designed clamping system is a huge flaw that makes this system pretty worthless for trying to get a proper edge.
It actually makes a huge difference if you are trying to sharpen something larger than a little pocket knife.
