Greensleeves perform 17th & 18th Century dance at the Early Dance Circle Festival Tadcaster 2017

  • 'Greensleeves' dancers perform The Dumps, Prince George's Birthday, Kelway's Maggot (Playford, various editions), and Minuet for 9 by Mr Couch, and Jigg for 10 by Mr Hickford (Pemberton, 1711), at the Early Dance Circle Festival at Tadcaster in 2017. All have been realised by Ann Kent, and the music has been arranged and recorded by Paul Kent.

One of the marvellous things about working on eighteenth-century dance, indeed, all historical dance, is that it requires you to forget the stresses and strains of today's world and immerse yourself in a social activity enjoyed throughout history at Court, in the Country House, and the Assembly Room. As far as our video is concerned, the choreographic shapes and figures were shown to their best advantage through having an excellent camera position.

    Just curious, but what dances and waltzes were danced in the 1720-30's era? You can PM if you want.

      I'm afraid there isn't much evidence for the 'waltz' before 1750, and of course the full flowering of it was in the 19th century.
      I suggest you might like to look at the Early Dance Circle website for more details of dances of the past. Under the heading 'About Us' click on 'What is Early Dance', then click on the 'Dance through History' link and follow the pages. For the waltz in particular try :
