- A quick journey through the fashions from 1838 to 1898!
Hope you enjoy the brief outline of the main fashion trends during the Victorian era.
the footage is mostly time lapse - but dont worry, many of the items will be made into indivudual videos with slower footage and a lot more information and details shown.
The patterns and instructions on how to make the dresses shown (and many more, including undergarments....) are included in my book, The Victorian Dressmaker, coming out June 2018!

As aways, I will try to answer any serious questions in the comments, but all rude or pointless remarks that don't add to the discussion will be removed.

Your maid is wearing the same outfit the entire time. I wonder how servant clothes/uniforms changed during those six decades.
@Lillither are you Shure?
Lol
Yes! I'm three hundred.
Why is this video popular suddenly
I wish I lived in the past 😭😭 it's so cool and I want to become a farmers with having large lands in the forest such a blessing to lived
For all new people tuning in, before asking your questions, here is a general PSA for your ease and guidance:
1) She can easily go to the bathroom. Crotchless knickers were worn, so she just needs to lift up the skirts and do the thing.
2) Corsets are not painful, unlike contrary belief. They are made of cording, reed, whalebone and very light steel bones. They only hurt when they are tight laced. A very, very few amount of people did that, and it was very frowned upon. Corsets are excellent back support, and support your assets very well.
3) These outfits are generally for colder weather. A lot less amount of layers would be worn in hotter weather. Plus, they are all breathable fabrics. Please remember that they were worn in England during Little Ice Age, before Global Warming, so the world used to be a lot colder than nowadays.
4) It is very easy to sit/walk/move in crinolines and bustles. They are all collapsible and made of light steel wires, so they are not a hinderance at all.
5) It takes only 7 to 8 minutes to get dressed completely. Many people take more than 15 minutes to put on makeup and do their hair. So it is not a very time consuming process.
All these points are explained in details by Isabelle aka Priorattire herself in her other videos, so go check them out. This is an awesome channel, and most of the videos are very informative, you won't be disappointed.
Thanks for the explanation 😊😊😊

I just realized, those dresses would REALLY help with social distancing! 😂
True wtf
They would also drag a lot of dirt in with some of the hem lengths and trains
@@JB-vd8bi Specially the natural form era dresses from the early 1880's, cause they had extra long trains
Victorian times weren't really the times of hugging and cuddling so........
i think the "it takes 2 hours to dress up!!!" comes from the fact that if you do your hair very well it does take 2 hours but that's mainly consumed by doing the hair. i think empress elizabeth of austria would have 5 people spend 2 hours doing her hair every morning? the clothes themselves don't take that long
I do my hair in about 5-10 minutes to, without help. All depends on the person really
A Gibson girl hairdo can be whipped up in 15-20 minutes...but some of those top pieces or jackets that need doing up and stuff must take hours how does one reach back that far?
That 1890's dress was so totally unexpected. it kinda shows that the fashion of the time wasn't a momolith and there really was a pretty wide variation between individuals. I totally love the sleeves!
I know poorer people's clothes might not be all that fashoinable but is there a chance you might make a video showing what those with different incomes would wear? It'd be interesting to see the clothes of those who barely made a living.
Great idea!
Same, I'd love to see that!
For the most part, it’s just simplified versions. A chemise, corset, petticoats, blouse, and skirt.
Watching the styles gradually change and grow and shrink into what I know was very intriguing.
The skirt volume decreasing was hilarious
Can you imagine the shell shock of someone who was middle-aged in the 1880s or 1890s living to see the 1920s flapper fashion in style for their grandchildren?
I would have really loved to see their faces
You can see it for reals in old movies and even 1920’s fan videos here on UA-cam. What flappers were doing wasn’t so strange, they just kept dressing like they were little girls even after they grew up
could u imagine them seeing are todays fashion they would be very much in shock specially the people wearing bikinis and trunks at the beach they thought it was a bit racy to see a bit of ankle 😁
"It is so inappropriate that all the young girls showing their legs in public today! Back in my time we wouldn't even DARE to show our ankles!"
@@misslady2639 "SHINS!!!! They are showing the men their shins and cutting off all of their hair?!"
The 1890's is to die for! 😍 Honestly though, this video is insanely accurate! I wish those "100 years of" videos were as accurate as this!
She is VERY GOOD!
The best!
I want someone someday to make this kind of video, but then after going through all of the 1700s, 1800s etc, to then continue to the 1900s, go through all of modern fashion in detail all the way up till current year. That would be so satisfying.
The dresses from the past were beautiful in my opinion
I agree
Yes, like old, classic cars, they had personality, uniquely designed for originality and character.
Yes, they were gorgeous. I wish I was born back then
I like the 1870's-1880's style, with the form-fitting jacket bodice that flared over the hips and had belled sleeves , overskirts collected in an apron style to reveal a flounced understkirt, the bustle at the back of the skirts where the material was gathered in accented ruffles, pleats, bows and drapes and the front of the skirt was narrower. And the equestrian-styled mini-top hat for women, sometimes with an attached veil, pinned to a curly updo. I think it was very classy--almost chic--like a woman's business suit with extra accents, laces, silks and draped fabrics.
Me too i like it
It looked very stylish indeed, but I prefer the 1870's with the First Bustle Era......The 80's style looked a bit too centaur-like.......
Who has this in their recommendations in July 2020?

The amount of layers. I could never.

I'm always fascinated with that kind of dresses. So lovely! I wish it's still seen in our time.

All of the dresses were gorgeous but my absolute favorite is definetly the one from 1865 at 3:06 !! I love the color and the shape of the skirt! And the black lace (im not sure how its called exactly) on the top part of the dress together with the gloves is just so beautifull! I cant understand why fashion went from these elagant and highquality beautiful dresses from natural fabrics to poliester crop tops and jeans that go way too high up the waist. Its just my opinion but fashion now adays is horrendous compared to the fashion from a long period of alteast a few centuries. I just wish these clothes could be more accessible nowadays.
Imagine going to a party drinking a lot of cocktails and then when you come home having to take of all that off, OMG I would give up and sleep in the dress hahahaha
I wouldn't like to sleep in a corset and a crinolie/bustle......
She wears the dresses and everything so well... It's weird to see her in normal present day clothes.. I love this channel.

It’s so interesting to watch the changes as it got closer to the Edwardian era
Meanwhile, the poor maid kept the same style for the entire 60 years :-)
hahaha
The best comment so far😂
Brunelleschi's Dome aww thanks haha!
i know i'm like super late but poor people's clothing pretty much stayed the same the entire victorian era. there are no big changes like there were for rich people
2:27 my favorite dress i just love the colors and how it looks
I love these Victorian dresses so much! We had a librarian in elementary school who would show up in Victorian outfits like these for story times, and I remember thinking they were all so gorgeous until I found out about corsets, but honestly they don’t seem uncomfortable if you wear them right. Sounds very… Unique.
Wearing such dresses without corsets is far more uncomfortable and traumatic then with corsets.
P.S. A high-quality corset, tailored to the figure and worn correctly, is comfortable and does not interfere with movement.
@@Olga_Ovechkina I actually read about this! I’ve also watched several videos talking about how corsets (while not necessarily made to be comfortable) weren’t overwhelming and didn’t hurt someone. It’s quite interesting to learn about!

I really love the fashion of the victorian era in general, especially from the mid-century up to the early 1870s with the crinoline and the crinolette cages ❤
I would love to see your husband doing a version of this with male fashion! I know it wasn't as colorful or drastic but I think it would be a greate reference for people like me (artists) who want to be accurate in their depictions!
He's done a few already!
Let’s just say I’m happy with the simple tee shirt and shorts

I'm not either
You wouldn't be in an English winter. You'd freeze to death.
I am not, puaj
No wonder cindrella lost her shoe running from the ball. With all those layers I'm not sure if I'd have been able to even keep my legs.
Anyway I loved every fashion. They are all lovely.
I don't know what it is about these videos, but they're absolutely delightful in every way
Fabulous. Did you ever make a mourning attire video? There were so many rules about it, and the duration of each stage... it might be interesting.
I have always loved Victorian costume- specifically the 1850s-1860s!!
Anytime I hear another girl complaining about how complex some of the prom and wedding dresses are, I'm showing them this video.
omg hahaha good
My prom dress was like that 1865 one! Honestly really comfortable
And that everyday these victorian women had to go through this
Girl, you're kinda dumb, girls these days obviously don't often wear such dresses. That's why they might complain, wanna bet 99 out of the 100 women in that time complained about it for the first few times they had to wear those outfits.
I wish more people would enjoy this style. It's beautiful.
I would like to know, how poorer people dressed.. an were the style changes the same? I mean like shapes and patterns and so on.. How did people dress who could not effort material like silk and all the colours?
relatively the same, not as elegant as the rich and mostly made out of cotton and wool. unless the woman was a prostitute, labourer, or worked in the fields. the urban middle class generally dressed the same as the upper class. the only real difference between fashion would be the rich and the extremely urban poor, living in work houses. but this was a time when wool, cotton and silk was becoming affordable for the first time for the general masses.
1872 is my favorite. It’s amazing how far backwards we’ve fallen.
Is my favorite too
I was thinking the exact same thing!!! They could go all out on the dresses and different combinations of designs😍😍😍....what do we have ti show for these days???😭

I wish women still wore these kinds of dresses today... so insanely pretty
KiWi KiWi But also Insanely uncomfortable.
Would u want to have to put on all those layers every single morning, and have to wear all that in the heat, and keep in mind u HAD to wear all that uncomfortable stuff, u couldnt sit or relax and outside the house u couldn't show any skin AT ALL. Now honestly how and why would u want women to have to wear that stuff still today
Ella W I never said anything about how comfortable it would be.. I said that the dresses they wore were pretty
KiWi KiWi i mean u said u wished women still dressed like this, i was saying if we still dressed like this it would be super uncomfortable. Thats probably why we have the clothes we do now, clothes slowly started getting less uncomfortable and less complicated
Ella W honestly they had no choice but to wear this stuff. And it’s horrible now that we have to use Uber’s to deliver our food. Time is changing fast and people are getting lazier and lazier so that’s why I thinks that people should still wear and act like it was a long time ago so people learn to do things themselves.
So incredibly elegant and stunning. Fashion back then was gorgeous
Imagine proudly walking with jeans and shirt around this time. The faces people will make 😂👌🏻
Luketeer Evans that’s what a lot of working class men wore though? Jeans, collared shirt, and suspenders, (depending on weather) jacket, and a hat.
Venus Gillespie ok, Sherlock. I mean modern clothes in this time. ;)
Several instances in this video her ankles are exposed! I had a case of the vapors for well over an hour.
I love how women unapologetically took up space with their clothing. Nowadays we're made to feel as though we should be as small as possible and take up as little space as possible. Although a crinoline must have been rather impractical!
Well the crinoline was the most practical thing in that era since it didn't require women to wear too many underskirts or petticoats to achieve the fashionable skirt shape
@@AlexandraXera That's a really good point!

Anyone else have original characters that “lived” in an ~alternate timeline that runs parallel to this one~ so you’re watching all these years flash through like:
“1880 - that’s the year they were born”
“1890 - they were 10 years old in that year”
“1893 - 13”
“1898 - 18”
Or is it just me?
I tried to compare the years to the ages of Anne Shirley from Green Gables. During WW1, her children were already young adults and teens, so that made her around 40-45 I guess. I tried to guess when was she old enough to wear dresses like these.
One of my "historical" original characters be like:
1857 - 7 yrs
1865 - 15 yrs
1872 - 22 yrs
1874 - 24 yrs
1877 - died :(
Imagine a hot day and all those layers
See our video on that...

Idk...remember things, EVERYTHING, was much more physical than nowadays. Working in a hot kitchen over a fire or hot stove, washing clothes by hand, cooking......and there would be no reprieve from it either. At least nowadays there will be somewhere you could go that was cooler or air conditioned.

@@llamaporg282 it's a myth that corsets do all that
@@riddhikhilnani5819 no it isn’t, depending on the way you use it of course
@@martza388 yeah true. If you tight lace it then obviously. Stays and corsets are kinda like the older day version of the bra. It's to support the body and also the heavy layers of petticoats and their dress. It isn't supposed to be painful.
Unless it doesn't fit (you can't buy a size of corset. It has to be custom made for your body) or you're tight lacing it. It should feel like a tight hug when you lace it up not the tightest you can go. That's waist training not what the function of historical corsetry was (unless you're those top 1% of noble women)
It's also gonna be uncomfortable until you've broken them in (will take 2 weeks ish)
