TRYING TO MOW WITH A TOPPER : GOOD IDEA/BAD IDEA??
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 сер 2024
- In today's video I try a little experiment to see if if I can top the field before the cattle leave it. I've seen a lot of farmers do it but they've all used mowers and not toppers. If it works, great and if not I'll have to move them anyway so I have nothing to lose.
Karen that topping was a great job. Great to see you putting on and taking off items without gloves. On all the Youyube videos now they could not even pick a small screwdriver off the workbench to put it into a tool box without gloves, And don't get me started on these building programmes on RTE, if they even have to even LOOK at a drawing they need a hard hat and safety glasses. I wonder how I ever survived to be 72. The world's gone mad. Your gentle approach and genuine concern with the cattle says a lot about you Karen. I do hope Norma's foot problem is only something minor.
I actually do wear gloves a lot because I have a fear of wiels disease 🤣

When the machine is doing heavy work on rushes, and in the interests of grass growth,, and because your experimenting,,, try lifting the cutters 4 or 6 inches higher,,, works a treat.
Hi Karen, just stumbled across your channel a few days ago, and since then have, I think, watched all of your previous videos, it’s really relaxing to watch all of your work on the farm, no huge equipment, fields etc. just running a small family business, I bet it’s not easy at times, but you still keep calm, and you are so grateful for all you do. Noticed in one of the vids with comments about you talking to much😊 , you just make the content the way you like it to be, that’s what makes 99% of all here happy. At the end of the day, no one is forced to watch. I am a non farmer, and I just enjoy watching you make the farm run. Keep up the good work.greetings from me in Germany 🇩🇪
Oh wow thank you so much! That takes some dedication 😊
Hi Kare Bob Fom Aus. Wow love that you are topping with the Cows in the saame paddock. We always did this to increase our yeld of natural grasses. With the reeds they krerep and if you keep them as low as p[ossible ever tnough may be a little Rank for the Cows at the time they will become accusomed to this and what thy dont eat will not ever hurt th area you cut.The more sunlight you let in the more natural groth you will receive. Keep up the great Work and ike all that live on the land and work so hard never secong guess yourslelf you do a great Job. Aussie Bob. Oh the Ciw with the limp looked moore like a Hoof that a Joint.
You are spot on with the long stemmy bits, cows won't eat that and once mowed they can get to the good shorter stuff. Another benefit of what you're doing is the longer stemmy stuff can add to pink eye so you're helping to prevent that. Well done young lady
Great job Karen, and brilliant video, look forward to the next. ♥️
Great video Karen. Topping works good. Enjoyed watching. 👍🏼👍🏼
Great video again Karen and great work with the topping.
Thanks you
Look beautiful Karen Topper and Tractor running well.
You look amazing sending love from Australia ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I trim my pastures about 6 to 8 inches high. The cows like eating the shorter, more lush grass and it also helps to keep the weeds under control.👍
Old long match box side ways sheep
Up and down for cattle old school
good job with the topping cattle liked it and another lovely video all round
Thank you 😊
Great job that topper is a great yoke to cut and chop ,👍👌good call
Look topping is the way to go & looks better all round. Keep 'er Lit
Great plan with the topping Karen ❤
“What more could they want from me now” - a bigger Bath? They’ll never fit in that one!
🤣🤣🤣
😂😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Karen I think you should look into buying a weed licker for the rushes , it’s a great way to get rid of them and when they turn brown then you will top them , Ken o O’Neill in Miltown is selling them and they are very good ones and you can pull it behind any of your tractors
I'll check that place out when it comes to it. I do plan on getting one at some stage. maybe next year at this point though
Hi Karen,
I do the same with the topping all of the time. Especially if I am not happy with the way a plot has been cleaned out before I move on the cattle. One tip for you is if you can top in the afternoon when the sugars will be at their highest, assuming that you have had some sunshine during the day, and you will find that they will eat out more of it because it will taste sweeter.
Thanks for that
Top it. Keep those rushes down and let grass takeover. First field really turned out well!
Trial it again Karen, sure you have nothing to loose, good video again as always, thanks
Thank you 😊
The Topping turned out very nice Karen! Those Rushes can get in the way, but all in all the fields turned out lovely! Really hopping Sassy Miss Norma just has a tiny pebble or rock in her hoof, or she just was experiencing some tweaking in her leg. As much as she puts on a Fierce Facade, she really is a sweetheart! Also splendid to see that young calf out and about compared to when it was in rough shape before! The Sunstroke theory might just be what happened! I smiled hearing how the cows loved one particular field over another! We humans feel the same way about certain places we go to as well! Appreciate my seat in this channel! MOO From Across The Pond In COW-lumbus, Ohio 👋
😊😊😊
I did not know what the difference between a topper and a mower was. Good lesson! :)
great video cows and calfs looking well
Great job with the toping helps promote new young leafy grass.
Just to let you know… here in America smaller farms use your type of mower some use wider to make it quicker……over all your doing a great job and ❤❤❤❤ watching your channel
Thank you!
I love watching your videos Karen ❤❤be safe out on the farm God bless you and your family from Woodburn Oregon 🇺🇸 USA 😇😇
can you brainwashed american idiot stop pushing your looney cult religions in these comments? Thanks
Looks like the mowing worked well, I would do it with the topper again on the new field.
Cool video!!! The cattle are looking great. 👍 I have never seen rushes here in the USA 🤷♂️
Never seen rushes??? 😯
@karenmoynihanfarm nope! They are probably here, just not where l live, mainly just thistles.
@@TobyHolben you must have dry land I suppose. We have plenty of thistles here too though 🙈
Great work 💪 We do exactly the same if the grass gets too tall. We have both a mower and topper, but we have better results with the topper since it seems the cows find that easier to eat. One tip, in the video I saw sometimes the topper is dragging a lot of loose grass what is pretty heavy for the tractor. With the 135 you would notice but with this tractor you won't, so keep an eye on it 😉 Love to see your passion with the cows 🤗
Yes you are right. I don't see it on the 390 and forget to lift it to clear it
@@karenmoynihanfarm I have a really old Fleming topper on my 35x and the rear of the topper is very low and drags the grass around underneath for fun. I notice the later ones have a better arrangement that I'm sure clears the cuttings far better. I'm very tempted to take an angle grinder to it!
Hallo Karen another interesting video a disk mower is the perfect job for strong rushes invest in a hydraulic top link a great job
Freshly mowed fields looks nice.
My mower is adjustable height. I cut my pastures most summers about 4 times. I cut the stems and weed tops off. I try not to cut the grass but just a little of the tops. My pastures look good most of the time unless it turns really dry. It sure helps control the weeds. If grass puts up a seed head it will try to go dormant. That is one of the main reasons I cut the steams off, that and weed control.
Great video again Karen thanks for sharing
Your topper definitely has mulching blades on it but you can always change them out for cutting blades Karen. Hope Norma is feeling better now.
Oh I didn't know that
Well done!!!
Cracking video as always
You’re a ‘Topper’ at the farming
😅😅 thank you
Karen. I'd recommend a metal bar bolted accross the middle of the bath. A neighbour of mine found animal on its back in one where they were pucking eachother.
Great video again I am completly opposite to you. I have always had a mower but never had a topper untill this year. They are worth the investment the only advice id give when looking for a mower is try to get a disc mower instead of a drum mower like I have got because it is easyer to get parts for them. You might have to pay more in the short term but it will pay off in the long term.
Thanks for that tip because I really wouldn't know
great vid you and farmer phil the then the veggie boys in the us love them vids
👍Olly Blogs and Flying Fergy Man…it’s a wicked Wednesday of vids.👍

Looks nice , looks like a nice day .
Hello to your Dad
They are like giant doggs , they are curious about all sort of nothing .
Thats what farmer P taught me .
Its hot in salt lake city utah 100 degrees .
Enjoy the film .
@@nancysmith-baker1813 Wow amazing the difference in the weather where you are
@@karenmoynihanfarm yes it's hot I am inside right now .
And we are very dry never seen it this dry so early .you stay safe .
Great work keep them rushes cut, if you get a hydraulic top link for the 390 it would make life easier like lifting the bath, there not too expensive.
Nice little project for ye putting a drinking traugh on an ibc tank for watering the cows . Your spike would move it around for you nice and handy too .
I didn't even think that would be possible
Some years our lovely neighbour comes over and tops my donkey field. This year we have 4 in calf belted Galloways to eat the grass down. So far 1 was bad news, 2 already calved and watching for the 4th. Sometimes they do the calving easy but not always….
Hi suggestion once your eye is healed or before put on Googles to protect your eyes that's what's important not what someone thinks how you look with them on, only thing that matters is your health.❤❤😊 if don't like Googles then a pair of safety glasses with side shields.
Cows are nosy they need to be where the action is😂😂
Really enjoy your videos I live in Texas it has been very hot here about 103 will the heat index is it's like 110
That's almost 40 celsius! We had less than 20 degrees Celsius for pretty much all of the summer
Could I suggest driving slower when slashing. This will get the horsepower into the blade. And, if it is at all possible get the blade as close to the ground. What we found by doing this was the tussock was being ripped out of the ground. We did this by getting longer high tensile bolts and shimming the blade coupling on the gearbox.
🆒 Video..Karen..U LOOK Great Wearim Sunglasses... !!!!
Don’t know much about goats but some people are hiring out their goat herds in the US to clean out brush of course they are hard to contain so perhaps not a good choice 😂
😃🚜😃👍
Stick with the topper Karen just get a fully offset topper mounted or trailed. I use an 8 foot trailed topper nicer job than any mower just my opinion . You have some lovely charolais.
I was looking at them as well actually. Fleming have a nice one. Can't justify the money this year though when I already have a topper but hopefully down the line
@@karenmoynihanfarm Mine is an Abbey never gives any trouble. I know where you're coming from all these things are expensive especially when you're in dry stock everything in time

Of course, will do 😊
Great video Karen, what is the update on the 390 loader, thanks have a blessed evening
Still waiting on it. I know where it is but just need it to be taken off the tractor it's on, tidied up a bit and put on mine
Is your locking clip come loose on top link because the is tilting forward watching the video now
Will I send down new wood for gate
I have wood and all 😅
have to look up what a rush is. not a term i have heard in the US...obviously a tough weed
What?? No way 😅 I wonder what you call them there, maybe reeds??
We call them sieves with us
@@leylandmini26 never heard that before

Why don't you get a sprayer to do the rushes
Karen joined the Kerry secret service
And totally rocking the look too ! 🤣
🙈🤣🤣
you need a hydraulic top link to pick up that bath
Notice you leave tractor idling when you get out....how have you overcome it slipping back in gear?
I take all 3 gear sticks out of gear now every time
You need a hydraulic top link for the 390 makes life easy
Your a bit like us all in Ireland, if there was any money in rushes you’d be a millionaire 💶💶💶💶
Exactly 🤣🤣
Well farmer Phil used a mower as a topper now you used topper as a mower lol
🤣🤣
The 1 tree 5 has been replaced.... I could hear it weeping..😪
The 135 is in for repairs. It'll be back and better than ever soon I hope. More work needed than we had expected
Why do your reels on Facebook say their from sofia martinez? Just wondering
@@stephenstewart4710 Because it's a fake account stealing all my videos and Facebook won't remove it no matter how many times it's reported
anymore phantom runaways of the tractor?
Didn’t slip into gear, handbrake flew off more than likely.
Thankfully no 😅
Can't bate the thursday videos 😀😃😄
Things are bad when I don't even know what day of the week it is anymore 🙈
Hi Karen would u let know please where u got backing bar for crush thanks❤
@@Johntrait It's from Bo Steel. If you're getting one online you can use a discount code KMOY24 and you'll get a few euro off it
@karenmoynihanfarm cheers thank a million for that Karen and happy farming
the thing is Karen, Try it and see. There is no right way to do something and its always good to experiment
If you went down at least one gear with a bit more revs the topper will cut much better and cut it clean
When I'm cutting almost 7 acres I just can't go that slow. I'm too impatient. that was in high first
Yes but you will get pleasure seeing it cut nice and clean so worth the extra time young lady 😊
How many hectares are you farming?
20
Would you considering going organic?
A nice payment.
No fertiliser costs
No Meal costs
Less labour.
A few less cattle (as no fertiliser and less labour etc).
@@johnn7722 Yes absolutely but it's not feasible right now. We need to get our reseeding done and see where we are then but also our sheds are not set up for organic. We don't have the lie back space so we would have to extend the shed and that is way beyond the budget right now
Nice video sub and like 227 👍😁
A 10 foot mover be idle
Does anyone know who’s in the football final this year 😅😅😅
Better teams than Kerry anyway 😔
If ya don’t scan the cows Karen ya can order milk pregnancy test of progressive. Once there over 28 days it will tell you if there definitely Incalf. It might help you
By testing their milk????
