Hey mate, great video and really useful as I've been setting up the camera. I think I would add to this list is to use shutter angle over shutter speed, I set mine to 180 and then it will automatically work out all of those things. It's also a great addition when using the 120 FPS slow motion, as sometimes the lights can flicker, which can be solved by enabling syncroscan, which allows you to change the angle by 1 degree increments (179 or 181 usually fixes the flicker). Otherwise really awesome information, and getting my hands on the Pana 35mm 1.8 tomorrow so will let you know how I find it!
Thanks, I am new to video and know the basics but have a hard time organizing how to actually work and organize myself in a practical way. Just being told how to set up your custom settings is a big help. I've got the photo settings down really well and had some photo custom modes but using them for video makes more sense since I know now how to really quickly change my photo settings from Q
@nolangunn Thank you so much for this video. I just recently picked up the S5IIX and your help setting up these three custom setups is invaluable. I know I won’t be the only person to say this. THANK YOU.
640 is the low ISO for VLOG, not all picture profiles are the same. Why are you not using Shutter Angle? If you switch to SA you literally don’t need custom modes, you just change frame rates (I have favorites mapped to an Fn button). This one of the main reason I sold my Sony a7IV for the S5ii
You’re absolutely right! Ultimately, that would be easier - but for most people it’s easier to understand shutter speed in the beginning. It would be a great follow up companion video though!
Thank you so much for walking us through the set-up step by step. You're clear, explain things well, and I'm able to stop and start the video to change my settings. Now off to use the camera! Cheers -looking forward to your future videos.
Great question. For the beginner, shutter speed makes more sense and is easier to understand. But for the intermediate shooter, angle is great. I still use shutter since it works with my brain better 😅
@@NolanGunn yeah, I mean, and for general vlogging and such hardly anyone will need this 😅 it's just me more like a cinema guy and understand some movie terminology a bit better
Superb. Thanks so much. Just one thing, I was attempting to set up for slow mo but I noticed that on my S5ii, it doesn'y seem to be showong 4k at 60p? Anyone have the same issue?
Very useful and easy fast way to change. fps and full frame to pas.I will follow you. A question: how to ice contrast button ALONE without changing aperture or iso?
I believe you can set that by holding down whichever button you want for that setting and mapping it to exposure comp. That way it’s it’s own button. Does that answer the question?
I'm a long time photographer who is just starting video, so my question will reflect that level of knowledge. Do any of the settings that you're suggesting require the use of an external recording device. Also, which video editing software would you recommend for someone totally new to video. Thanks for the informative video!
That’s awesome! Welcome to the video world. None of these settings require an external recorder. I use Premiere Pro (and recommend it) but if you want something simpler, Adobe Premiere Rush is a great place to get started. You’re very welcome!
Ammm, so if you have 3 custom setting as video, you abandon photography? Why don’t you have one mode for 6k open gate? It’s really useful for 9:16 social media
A very informative video, however, the 422 10 bit setting won't work with my editor (I have to transcode with Handbrake which adds time). 420 10 bit is OK though.
Nice video! I am thinking of upgrading from Canon M50 to Lumix S5ii for talking head videos. Does Lumix brand cameras depreciate at a faster rate when compared with Canon or Sony?
I cannot get peaking on in autofocus, it's on when in manual but goes off when switched to autofocus on the lens. I have the peaking set to on “Display During AFS”, any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
Do you use resolve? If so, do you find it easy to grade VLOG? I want to get this camera but as someone who wants to use resolve I find the lack of BRAW support externally disappointing, especially with the previous models having it.
Hello guys, thank you Nolan for this very efficient video !Really appreciate it ! I was wondering if someone would be able to help me with the issue I'm facing. I can not see the 60p option on my menu, does anybody knows why ?
Hey Nolan one question when you state to change your shutter to 50 , 125 and 250 for example (50°) I normally keep that set to (180°) I have the little degree symbol next to the number? Is that correct because the screen is almost completely black... I think that has to to do with angle but I am not sure can you provide a little help with this... thanks Well I figured out how to change the shutter however I can't set it to 250 it will only set to 249.8?
You’re right on! 180° is the easier (but slightly more complicated to learn) way of using your shutter. So as long as you keep it at 180° then your shutter will always be “correct” for shooting at twice your frame rate. (I.e. in 4k24p an 180° shutter would be the same as 1/48) the biggest advantage of shutter angle is not having to change it when you switch to different frame rates since 180° is almost always the right setting.
Sigma 35 🙌🏼 great video as always, as a Sony user, I’m always a little jealous of Panasonics deep menus. I’d love to see a A7siii AF comparison with this camera 😏
Great lens 👌🏼 yeah the menus are so great. You can even setup names for different manual lenses and it saves the settings for each. I’ve been super surprised with how good the AF is especially with the Sigma adapted.
You guys get 4K at 60 fps, please stop 🤣🤣😭 that’s a privilege! Panasonic fixed their AF issue, but they lag behind when it comes to offering higher shooting speeds with no crop or need for 1080p for it to work 😐 I have the S5IIX, and I love it but besides the crop & quality reduction.
I am using lumix s5ii camera from 10 month and I captured photos and video . Within 35mm and 24-70mm great quality videos and photos , multiple type autofocus on based subject
Doesn’t the S5ii have shutter angle instead of shutter speed? that’d be way easier to maintain the right shutter speed depending on the recording frame rate.
Honestly and i am by no means a professional... but it seems the you are shooting out a window... the bottom frame of the window is blurry the bottom of the window frame is trying to draw focus and you are trying to gain focus on the the road and the cars... if you were to place your camera on a tripod and outside trying to gain focus on the cars on the road I think that it would be much better... just my thoughts... I have not had this issue with my camera... just seems you are shooting out a window too many variables there trying to gain focus plus you are moving your wheel changing F-stops will cause a shake with the camera.
What are your favorite autofocus settings and why?
This is the best video I have seen for this camera so far on UA-cam. Great job!

Would you change anything for self filming skateboarding from a tripod?
Great stuff man. Also, love the new shooting location - good work!

Great video. Thank you. The bundle for this camera comes with a Leica 20-60mm F3.5-5.6 zoom lens. Will this setting work well with zoom lens?
Yes it will! Lowest aperture will be different, but the other settings will work.
Thank you. What do you see the difference in autofocus -C-S?
Single is great for a one-time focus selection whereas continuous makes it so it will track your subject continually.

I usually proxy most things - but I agree that some codecs (the 6k for me) slow down my M1 quite a bit.

Thanks John!
Hi Nolan, thanks for the video. I was wondering how I find the 4k 120fps 422 10L? I only have the 100fps and the 50fps (instead of 60fps). thanks
This camera does not have 4k120. It only has 1080 120
Thanks for the video, can any S5 mk 2 users tell me what the blue light next to the red record button is, it’s always on? Thanks in advance
the blue light is that your wifi is on
I cannot get peaking on in autofocus, it's on when in manual but goes off when switched to autofocus on the lens. I have the peaking set to on “Display During AFS”, any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
Hmm. Hard to say. Try setting your camera dial to MF and the lens to AF and then see if that works.
@@NolanGunn Tried it, didn't work

I'm a premiere editor. It's pretty simple to grade V-LOG. I use Gamut's LUTs for the S-series cameras and they work great!

same for me: only 4k@50fps and FHD@100fps
You need to set your settings to NTSC instead of PAL i guess
Noob question. If the shutter speed is set to specific value then what are the things need to adjust to get the right exposure
question, every time I change the photo style from standard to vlog on video mode, it also changes it on "photo mode"... does this happen to everyone?

It does! I agree. The average person doesn’t understand shutter so I wanted to keep this tutorial fairly entry level.
The only way I can get 120fps is through S&Q mode on the Full HD video mode.
Hmm... It's pretty far down in the recording mode menu so you may need to dig through the menus a bit.
