SSG Shurer sadly lost his courageous battle with cancer yesterday. A great man, a great Soldier, a great husband, father, friend, and teammate, and a true American Hero. May he rest in peace and may his memory be for a blessing.
We should all strive to be as useful and selfless in life as Ron. A true hero. I’m so glad Jocko brought him on the show so he could humbly tell his story for all the world to see. Forever memorialized here. Rest easy Ron. Thank you for everything you did to bring our soldiers home.
Reading these comments, reading how SSG Shurer is no longer with us, reading the date that he passed away. My daughter was born May 14th 2020. That day we lost a hero, and I gained a daughter. God bless, and blessing to his family. Thankfully jocko got him on the show while he could. Thank you for your service sir.
JD Same here. Saw the story while getting ready for work, and pulled it up. My prayers go out to his wife and kids. We will see you on the other side, brother. De Oppreso Liber.
Ron is so soft spoken, and that’s it. That’s what’s so unique. He is an absolute badass. A total monster of battle, yet, very soft spoken. Very direct. Great guy, but daaaaaangerous and a life saver. An unbelievable man. Cheers Ron!!!
Ron and Miranda, please accept the gratitude of my family and I for your service and that of your family. God bless your family for sharing him with the nation. Jocko thank you for getting him on. DEF.
My Uncle was a Green Beret. I often pull up the song...and think of him. My kids will put the song on and sing it with me. He never not once spoke of his missions...as he said he wasnt allowed. I wished he could have at least told me a few. His funral was beautiful. The air crafts the first 3 guys shot 7 times next 3 and then next 3 for 21 shots. The amount of people there was huuuuge. I was 7 at the time and it was a huge impact on me at that age to know he had made that big of a diffrence. I miss him. God bless all the military who has fought with the check that they sign in the begining for everything including their lifes.
Part of me thinks that when Jocko is laughing at the stories he’s telling he’s also laughing at the fact at how different Ron is from him yet still a badass like him.
@@reallyhappenings5597 I think you have some images in your head that aren't correct. There is no look to SF or NSW you got tatted gorillas in regular infantry too. Give any serviceman kit and no grooming standards and they'd all look they same... And you should check out how Ron looked before his battle with terminal cancer which he sadly lost.
Just watched this episode (going from #1 onwards) and googled Ron... great loss. I am really crashed now, was hoping for a recovery for him... Rest in piece, hero...
I had the privilege of meeting and spending a minute with Ron some years ago after he had gone with the SS, and never have I met a more soft spoken Gentlemanly individual than Ron, who was, with the flip of a switch, a Warrior and when need be, a Savior. We were Blessed to have had him and Heaven is a much better place today. Thank You for your Service & Sacrifice RIP Brotha👊 My Best, RP
My Great Grandfather. KIA. I had the honor to visit his memorial in Manila Philippines for years ago. Cassin Young (March 6, 1894 - November 13, 1942) was a captain in the United States Navy who received the Medal of Honor for his heroism during the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Rip Ron... what a humble amazing person. Didn't mention all the enemy he neutralized on top of saving everyone. Godspeed sir, and God bless his family. A true American hero, and example for humanity in general...
If guys didn’t figure out how humble Ron really is....read the Medal of Honor description. During the mission, Ron himself killed a bunch of guys and it wasn’t even mentioned once during this interview.
"Beans, Bullets, & Black Oil" - WWII history of US Navy support fleet in the Pacific. Loaned to me by a Marine friend. The book had belonged to his Dad who served on a supply ship then. I was reluctant to read such a noncombat history. But I cracked it & couldn't put it down. Amazing! I've always had a great appreciation for any who serve in any capacity but I came away in awe & with new found respect for all, ...all branches, past & present.
I was wondering why he looked the way he did at his age during this interview, & as I'm perusing the comments I see someone say "RIP", so I looked it up, & he died not long after this podcast appearance, having been diagnosed with stage-4 lung cancer in 2017. Left behind a wife & 2 young sons...try to make any sense out of that. My heart aches for his family. What an amazing career this man had, so glad Jocko was able to preserve his story when he did.
Simply judging by his shy behavior you wouldn't think he's such a badass, but he is. It's proof that ordinary men can accomplish extraordinary things with the right mindset.
Thank you SSG Shurer for you Sacrfice your Selfless service and amazing inspiring story! Prayers with your family GOD watch over you and keep you close!
He was in Gardez in 06-07? I was there too. Smaller FOB back then compared to what it eventually became. (with a fair sized Afghan camp attached). Wish I could remember seeing him if I ever did. He was right though. There was action everywhere it seemed during that time except for around Gardez.
I read the book, and Mr. Shurer is waaaay more diplomatic than the authors about the capabilities of the local troops, the mission, leadership decisions, etc
It’s so sad that I was in the middle of this and was like, “wow, what a soldier” and went to the comments to see that he’d passed away. I hope his family has found peace!
Why are Americans like this not on Wheaties boxes instead of some over inflated ego sports (star),hats off to you sir, when I get down and out about the direction our countries headed,I hear stories like this that renew my faith
Watching this on my phone... I keep looking at it to see the guy telling this story.. Holy geeezus. Unreal what a badass he was. What an inspiration. I'm going to try harder in this life because of this podcast but will never match up to SSG Shurer.
I got that Ranger deal in Airborne school in 1989. Ranger Liaison made announcements in Airborne school…..I got new orders for RIP, instead of 4th ID. Best thing I ever did. I was 32 in SF Selection, graduated Q-course at 34.
SOMETIME I FIND MYSELF ASKING WHY WE LOSE GOOD FOLKS AND EVIL REMAINS. IM SAD TO LEARN OF THIS MAN AND THEN MINUTES LATER REALISE WE HAVE LOST HIM. AS ALWAYS IM THANKFUL JOCKO BRINGS US STORIES FROM THE HEROES THAT PROVIDE US THE BLANKET OF SECURITY THAT ALLOWS US TO SEE THESE FOLKS! THANK YOU!
Danger’s Hour by Maxwell Taylor Kennedy about the kamikaze attack on the USS Bunker Hill. A great book! As the reader you are exposed to this horrific event from both sides. My wife’s grandfather served on the Bunker Hill and survived the attack. He shared some of his personal stories with the family much later in his life, and reading this book years after hearing him talk brought an even crazier perspective to what he and all the men on board endured.
I’ve been thinking about this since these wars have started. I’m not former military or a police officer. What’s inside someone to run towards a gunfight? Ever since war has been around people have been running to the fight. I think it’s more than just training or courage. When you deploy to a war area do you stay nervous or scared for the entire deployment? I don’t know if I could have been that mentally tough enough to do the same thing as armed servicemen do daily. Thank you to all that has served
You would be able to run to the fight. If someone is trying to kill your family would you not do everything you could to defend them? I know you would, that’s a basic human instinct. You don’t want to die but
You become numb to it pretty quickly. There is a mission to do. Your brothers to the left and right of you are depending on you so you push on through.
They’re the best medics in the world they can perform battlefield surgeries they can perform surgery in the rear and during their training they do residency in hospitals and trauma centers and er it’s not so far fetched if you work or spend time in a hospital regularly that if you see a physically fit guy with a military haircut not as short as when we’re in osut training but looks like a military cut there’s a chance he could be sf this is not classified this information is public in many documentaries and books I always listened to them when they told me something or were teaching us medical training scenarios and we worked with them I’m glad to have them to work on me if needed sf medics are the best in the world
This guy is a Green Beret medic?? He literally just looks like an average joe! And he is from Washington like me... wow this guy is great. Also the visuals of this battle remind me of a WWII battle
