To echo several others, there are plenty of makers out there who should be able to handle custom Senet boards for you -- kudos on creative thinking in merch! Also, ICYMI, the Romans used 20-sided polyhedral dice...no one really knows what they used them for, but the idea of Romans playing D&D is too good an idea to not think about....

Very enjoyable and great overview of Senet. Never heard of it before but like the strategy and the concept the winner becomes spiritually empowered. I did play GO quite some time ago. Loved it and got reasonably proficient at it. From my perspective it is the greatest strategy game of all. I know it derives from ancient Japan but not how this came about. If you ever get in the mood for doing a similar history video of GO I will be very grateful.

Pretty accurate gameplay. The reason why there are 4 sticks and 4 challenge squares before the end square is the slowdown to dramatic end. Senet is part classic race game with PopoMatic bubble and Monopoly or African star like challenge squares. Very interesting game when was allowed by gods. Good you have rules where start is right. The 10 or 14 playable piece means you start either 11th or 15th slot. Then move around the board similar as popmatic race. Everyone starts same place so there is no difference which tokens you choose. Tokens are visible on board just to track progress of game. Start game from rebirth and river brings you back to rebirth.

New rules: If you send your opponent's dancer back they have to drink a shot. Or if you land on a carved square you must drink a shot. Very quickly you or your opponent will have forgotten the rules and a fist-fight will likely develop (like every game of monopoly I've ever played). Thanks for the great vid Kayleigh! Dave J

Hi Kayleigh, Another brilliant video. Senet looks very interesting, I’ll have to watch your video again and take notes and maybe more research. I have a small collection of modern board games, one of which is very special and I devised it to play with my little (at the time) son as we both like trains/railways. Sorry - No more details. Here’s a challenge, we play Kayleigh’s Senet and then my “Kayleigh’s Travels” (temporary name).

As an ancient Egyptian, you spend your day talking to your builder about the tomb you are building yourself, going to the temple to pray for a good afterlife and then you finish the day, gathering your family around the table for a lovely death based board game.

With dice , sticks , and fortune tools , there is way to generate electromagnetics that will open up the microcosmic 4th Dimension , where you can start " divining " yer way into rippling into the 5th Dimension. Thats what I believe they were after , and why dice have endured for so long , despite our recent loss of their true " di - vinity. Wicked video , Kayleigh!!

I came across this game a few years ago, but there were slightly different rules. Example, you had to land on square 26 before proceeding to 27-30. Also, when moving off, I learned that it had to be exact, but not about moving backwards the remaining spots. It was more of if you can't move the exact amount, you just didn't move. I like the moving back option though as it means hitting the river again.

Kayleigh, when you were explaining the rules I kept thinking I have seen this before. I watched the video again. On my third viewing it came to me. The rules took me back nearly fifty-four years ago to the Star Trek episode “A Piece of the Action”. Captain James Tiberius Kirk was attempting to “explain” the purposely confusing rules of “Fizzbin”, a card game from Beta Antares IV, to his captors.
Senet is over hundred times older. I thought the rules were incomprehensible my first time though, each time through the video it gets a little least foggy. Looks like you might single handedly bring back the ultimate classic board game, not bad for pretty blonde from the Netherlands who isn’t even thirty. Chaulk another one up for Kayleigh

I made a nice board about six years ago, we’ve played it loads. We always cast our sticks end on so they fall randomly, this reduces the risk of shenanigans. It also leads to people naturally tapping the sticks a couple of times on the table before releasing which gives the game a distinctive and satisfying sound.
In the version we play 26 is the house of happiness and must be landed on with an exact roll. 27-29 are the same as you say, with the addition of the house of Horus at 30. From each of these exact rolls are needed to cast off as per the rules you are using, except failing to roll exact number from 28-30 only means you can’t move that piece. Pieces are only dumped in house of water/sent to house of rebirth if, they roll a 1 from 26 or are taken by another piece on the last 3 spaces, as they do not to return to the house of happiness.
Are you aware of this variant? I think it’s better. Ive played hundreds of times with friends and family and even adapted it for up to 4 players (although 2 works best) we also call a 5 piece game a short game and 7 piece game a long game.
Anyway great video, if you’re coming to the UK you can pop in ours for a game with me or the kids and a nice cup of tea!

Possible that the invasion by Alexander and the subsequent rule by the Ptolemaic rulers and their emphasis on Greek customs led to the decline in Senet? The blue lapis senet board with the Djed pillar of Osiris (Au Saur) and the tjet or knot of Isis (Au Set) on the side panels is quite beautiful. Is it possible the storage carvings were a way to show temple patronage or affiliation?

In my Opinion the game Senet is also a way to remember the past, when they saw the plasma discharge in the sky as Killer Aurora taking many forms that they interpreted as dancing god's and something those plasma discharge was so intense that it scorched the land at many place, maybe that is the reason peoples from all around the world went underground for a long time.. What this shows, from an engineer point of view, is the human need to generate unbiased source of random data - stick dice. Unbiased data still challenges researchers.

Makes wonder if anyone the was originally sentenced to death, but was able to convince their capture to play Senet and if condemned person won. Then their life was free to live another day. As far as designing a custom Senet broad game with your logo on it would be an interesting challenge and a risky decision if you decided to go the Kickstater route. The content creator Tenhun created custom decks of playing cards with his artwork on then and hopefully the companies that are manufacturing them will do A good job, because I actually did back the project bought one of each deck of cards, uncut sheet layout of each deck and a t-shirt.

I invented a He-Man game, on my chessboard(that I made myself), which is a game based on the ancient game Mehen. The game has a 'magic' roll that lets you move across the board, and you can have as many player/pieces as you can collect He-Man toys.
Me and my cousin played a couple times and worked out the rules.
Its fun, and usually takes 50mins-hour to play.

Sounds cool, although so does a He-man piece based chess game; though it might be difficult deciding which characters are which pieces, especially for the white/good side! :D

Per the rules 4 other videos have it the 4 down sticks equal a '5' not a '6'. That may be better play as there would be an equal chance of odd and even results from the throws. There might be an advantage in starting order if the odds were not equal.

have you read chapter 24 in "understanding media" by marshall mcluhan? it's dense reading, but he basically explains how games sort of encode the mentality of the culture of their origin.
so thinking about that, I was noticing how the game of senet encodes this idea that you need to be "lucky" or favoured by the gods to win the game. you have to throw the correct number of moves in order to win. if you don't, there are a number of hazards that will keep you stuck or forever having to go back and start over.
if you're lucky to throw the right numbers, you get granted entrance into the afterlife. if not you're forever going to go back and try again.
one could imagine that for the really competitive, it was a huge pissing contest to be the luckiest -- probably lots of good luck charms, incantations, curses (to set your opponent back) -- and maybe for the really competitive, illusions and power plays (to establish one's dominance)...
we only have the game left, but it would be interesting to go back in a time machine and watch a competitive game.

Go/Weiqi, to this day, is the most mathematically complex board game ever created. In 2,000 B.C. China was already having organized tournaments and recording games. It is a common saying "If aliens play games, they play Go." This seems like a big jump when compared to Senet and Backgammon. It would be interesting to see an episode dedicated to just the history of Weiqi.

In ancient India there was another game that is mentioned in our Epic Mahabharata and is still played in some parts of India .. It's called "Chausar" or "Chaupar" .. it's a little bit like Ludo but was played with elongated square dices .. The Epic Mahabharata is believed to be written at least 5000 years ago .. here is a wiki link about the game - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaupar
