  • The historic game of Hounds and Jackals - also known by several other names - was rediscovered by British archeologists in the late 19th century.
    The game is at least 3500 years old, and several variants have been found over the past century.
    Unfortunately, the original rules to the game are unknown, but game historians have devised several possible ways to play the game. I present two of those in this video.
    In either case, it's a race game, and the first set of rules also includes elimination of the opponent's pieces. The NewVenture set includes stick dice and enough pegs to play these and some other variants. You can discover them easily with a little research.
    This is part of our "Games of Ancient Egypt" set which includes four other ancient games from the area. You can get your copy of the game here:

    I've always wanted to know how this game was played ever since seeing it in the Ten Commandments as a kid

    Thanks for the great overview. I had not heard the version from the Russian game researcher in 2017. I missed his name however (Dmitri ?Sterio?). It is an interesting take on play. The most common I have seen is based version 2; however I am super curious of game play on version 1 and how that developed. Any chance you can help me with name spelling so I can check out the original notes etc.? I love doing game research. Thanks for the video.

      Version 1 is based on rules developed by Dmitriy
      Skiryuk, Russian game historian in 2017, with some deviations
      suggested by Daniel Thibault, Canadian computer scientist,
      author and game researcher.

    Question, do you have to land on e or g to get pegs on the board or could you put them on there without touching e or g?

    • @DavidMMcCord
      @DavidMMcCord Рік тому +1

      In version one, when a peg ends its movement on or passes E or G, a new peg is placed at "A". In version two, when a peg ends its movement on E or G, the player gets an extra turn.

      This, and Pachisi, and the use of playing cards as dice (which goes back to the 16th century).

    Not true! We all know, Yu-Gi-Oh! is ancient game of the pharaohs!
    I wonder which Egyptian god created it.

      Yu-gi-oh is Ancient Egyptian for "fetch",
      so it's probably the Jackal-headed guy.
