I wanted to do a video on why most yard drains fail. We use these two pipes and we endorse these two pipes. They're both eight slots. They're both made by Baughman Tile. One is a custom ran pipe just for yard drains and foundation drains and that's the Royal blue that you see look at the size inlets. That is the largest inlet that you can find in any pipe right there. A big difference between the blue and the yellow, so we lean really hard on the blue and we love that pipe. It's called the Baughman High-Octane. I'm wanting to show you guys all the different reasons why yard drains fail. We see it all the time every week we're digging up failed drains to replace them with ours which are proven three decades and are all working. So here we go.
We did not put this drain in. I wanted to show you what failure looks like. We were at a VIP client of ours that we were planting a few trees late season. You can see the snow on the ground in Michigan and this is a pipe with a wrap, a filter wrap. This is not the right way to do a yard drain. Your stone is going to mix with your dirt and they're going to plug. So what good is a pipe that doesn't have any dirt in it if you can't get the water in it because the stone migrates into the dirt and the dirt migrates in the stone? So one of the biggest sins in yard drains, this is not right for a yard drain. You got to wrap the stone and pipe as one. And I've had a lot of people say, well do you still want to wrap the pipe? That's redundant. Nothing's getting past the first wrap. If you use a really good filter wrap. We use a non-woven geotextile fabric that is punched and we have it ran through that process and punched twice. That's why we flow more water.
Now dirt. Nobody wants to haul it away. I get it. It's an expense. Excavation, it's an expense, but that's why yard drains fail. People don't want to haul out all that dirt. We haul out all that dirt and we don't put any of it back in. We fill the trench in with stone. Look at all that stone.
There used to be just nothing but clay in this yard. Now there's this great vein of stone to move water. We can put the sod on top of this. We'll do our burrito wrap and the sod grow just fine. Just cut it off with two and a half inches of root. No dirt back in the trench. You work too hard to get the dirt out. If it was worth keeping, you wouldn't be there in the first place because soil with low or no percolation is that's the jobs that we're on. Okay?
Now here, this is perfect. I love this. This is great. So some guy's gonna write you up a quote and tell ya, I'm including five inlet basins for the bulk water and I'm going to have a four-inch pipe and carry it out to nowhere because a lot of these drains literally go nowhere.
So here we go. So the frost heaves these basins in Michigan. This is not Florida, we can't do this. The basin heaves. That's why we use blind inlets. And I'm starting to show you more and more how to incorporate a blind inlet. The frost will even heave the pipe and I just showed that really quick in that clip there. But that's a joke and it's a scam.
Okay, so this is like the talk, right fabric. Is it worth it? Do you know which one do you buy? You have to have a non-woven geotextile fabric and you can't just go on Amazon. You just can't buy the cheap stuff. You have to buy good punched fabric. Now we started to sell ours online to you guys because we run ours through a process where it's punched twice. Now, there are no tricks here. Everybody wants to, you know in the comments section, talk about, Oh, it's concaved so now you've got twice the surface area. I really don't care if I'm holding a fire hose to this thing. It's going to take the water. The buckets full so now it's overflowing. So I've proven it time and time again. Our fabric works better than any of the other fabrics on the market. It has a crazy strong tensile strength, which is incredible because we've punched it full of so many holes to bring up the flow rate and it still maintains its strength. [...]

I have a yard that is clay and water just sits on top of the ground. My problem is I can't move the water to the rear of my house due to a chain link fence with a 6' high hill and cement roadway directly behind the fence. I believe my only option would be to get the water to the street in front of my house but I'm not sure if I have enough drop. What would you suggest?

Well everyone can learn how to do it. For most people, I'd assume after 30 minutes of removing just the top layer of grass it would be enough to make them want to hire some one else to do it like a professional. Haha

Love this video. I have seen soooooo many drainage systems either residential or even municipal that if you just take the time to really look at them. You can tell that in order for them to function as intended they MUST fail a little bit first. I'd rather have a system that deals with the last drop if water the same way it does with the first.

These folks have a river flowing down one side of their house every time it rains, taking out there ability to even use one side of their property. Soil here in the Ozarks pretty rocky. It can rain for days here too. Houses get wash-out so I believe the guy above me.
Upcoming project. Doesn't matter its concave example. In the real world the water will be up against the fabric.
I wondered how to keep the stone from mixing with the soil. Excellent.
I used to install these and it's just as he says. The way we used to do it didn't even involve wrapping, there'd be a layer of fabric at the bottom of the trench, layer of rocks supporting the pipe, then the pipe covered with rocks and a last layer of fabric.
We had a slightly different reason for using a french drain, they were usually only a few feet long so that a path could go over the top, but in principal it's similar.

Please advise, Sir, I just installed a sump basin in crawlspace- a Home depot perforated pipe that came wrapped in a sock, dug a trench in my sandy crawl space under the house. I did not lay fabric under the stone, I just laid pea stone in the trench in the sand. I buried the sock wrapped pipe in the pea gravel.. WHATS GOING TO HAPPEN? Did i screw up by not laying fabric in the trench?

If I lived in MI, I would hire you. I used to install these in the parks and what you're saying is true. I remember installing one one time on a hillside where you only had to dig like 5-9 inches to hit water in a similar method. As far as I know, they haven't had to have it redone, because we surrounded the pipes with rock and then fabric.
In some cases, like if we needed more weight bearing capacity, we would use larger rocks to hold the weight, but for this, you're clearly fine as there shouldn't be much weight.
Thanks for the video. From a drainage professional, I believe you have created the best method for underground drainage installation. I am surprised how the grass not dry out without have soil to keep it moist? My research shows that you need at least 6-8 inches of soil between a rock bed and new grass. I can see your grass living in spring but I think in a drought situation that it would dry must faster and dye out or just turn brown quicker then the rest of the lawn.
This isn't a particularly new technique, the fabric is a slightly new idea, but 20+ years ago we were installing systems like that in WA State and I didn't get the sense that they were new at the time.
As far as grass goes, I didn't ever do an install with grass over the top, so I don't know, we never planted grass over any of ours. We just placed them where there was a walkway or under walkways to get water to the other side.

Watching this I am thinking of the ag tiling done on fields- 3" deep, narrow trench with no stone or fabric...and it works.
Agreed. I installed a Menards type system and it failed in MN. What you are talking about makes complete sense. You wrap the rock behind a retaining wall so why wouldn’t you do it on a drainage system.
We also install French drains, I work for PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY GOVERNMENT IN Virginia have used all kinds of pipe over the years I have 24 years with them done it right way wrong way and have ass way like your pipe never have seen that pipe normally they will use cheap corrugated perforated pipe from lowes or home depot, so I do plan on showing this video to my bosses thankyou Ed kesock

As an Australian though I did find it quite distressing watching as you demonstrated your (fabulous) fabric. Being from a dry country and growing up in a rural location with rainwater tanks....let’s just say, it’s hardwired into me not to leave the water running....EVER, to not waste any water, 2 minute showers etc. As I watched you fill up the bucket once, I was fine. On the third fill and tip I was squirming and had to look away. As I said, it really made me realise just how “hardwired” I am when it comes to saving water, and, as the Aussie tv ads say “using water wisely”. I grew up with high level water restrictions (when we eventually had “town” water). Look it up online if anyone is interested - Water Restriction Levels - Australia

I inherited golf course drainage when I became the irrigation tech a few years back .
I really like what and how to properly install and why. But I get motion sickness watching the speed up videos. I have to look away and listen to the videos. I keep watching because I and especially my neighbor needs this system. His garage has been flooded three times because these flash rain storms here in Panama City Florida. So anyways I've learned a lot from these videos. Thank you to the FRENCH DRAIN MAN and his crew.

I bought the geotextile double punch fabric from FDM Shipped to my door 2days. The stuff is thick and heavy, I'm thinking water ain't gonna run through this sh*t. Got a glass of water and bunched up the fabric to hold the little lake of water I was expecting, I poured the water out and it ran straight through the fabric onto my floor. I was blown away.

This is a great video and I'll buy your products. But, a little constructive criticism. You talk about using a professional to do your drain or know what you're doing if you are a DIYer. You need to do the same with your camera work! I'm damn near dizzy trying to watch this. Great info, keep up the good word.

Ok I have a BIG problem with my Failed draining issue in the backyard.
Only washer is connected to this drain.
It has clean out cap, connected to a 4” pvc pipe... connected to a metal barrel... metal barrel is connected to a black perforated pipe. It’s all CLOGGED and barrel is rusty and NO GRAVEL but they put some plastic curly shaving which are making digging very down. Wish you were in Florida, need some advice with this
Right. It was awful I could barely even think about what I was hearing because of the constant motion like I was on a roller coaster. Also you need to slow down because you're talking fast put all that together and it's a little chaotic. Which is a shame because you have great information.
Good stuff . I dug up a drain once where somebody had covered the drain stones with solid plastic to keep the dirt out. What is your best way to trim drain box extensions that come in one size only ? I find them tore up all the time from folks edging them with a gas powered edger and it drives me bananas .
Awsome video. At my healthy age (70), It's going to take me a while to dig my trenches. I finally hired a couple of guys to help me dig and put in the French drain but I'm gonna make them watch your videos before they start

i did what you mentioned only difference is i ran the pipe along side garage foundation and covered in stone just didnt cover with grass its nice and neat no dirt etc work great oh i did lay the fabric down forgot to mention that.it not only eliminated the pool of water i was getting now the yard water is being dispersed and no more leaks in house!! thanks you guys

Closed the deal today for $3,000. Going to do roughly a 50-foot and a 40-foot curtain French drain wrapped just like you show.

I had a French drain put in last Aug and after a year of several heavy rains we’ve found it to fail. The trench directs the water to a 4x4ft hole that was filled with clean rock meant to hold the runoff. Water is filling that area and now pooling causing a mess. Any recommendations?
I've never understood those basins that leave standing water. Here in Texas, that becomes a mosquito factory.
You can droll small holes in the bottom of the basin to release the water

1.) How does your drainage fabric compare to others out there? I only need 100 Ft. Are any other brand names almost as good as yours that you have tested? What are the dimensions of the fabric to do the job like in your videos? Looks like it would be wider then 3ft? I need to install in very sandy soil on a ridge in northern Illinois area. That NDS soil separator fabric tears so easily, LOL! Made a mistake purchasing that. Bringing it back!
2.) Additionally where do you get the downspout connection hardware with the vents etc... Need the clean out with the pop out screen & the catch basin discharge etc... What brand name do you recommend/use? Thanks in advance for a speedy response. Again, love your videos!

I have a one and one half pipe or maybe two inch pipe that runs from my backyard to the street from the builder. I want to put in some drainage as water settles by my front area from bad yard pitching and I want to tie into this pipe. Any ideas?
I like the quality of components you use & appreciate how well your systems are put in place. I’ve installed alot of drainage here in Texas, & made similar errors when I was green as hell. Any namedrops on recommended non-woven geo textile fabrics you would recommend??

I've done a little drain work over the years never a French drain. But the way you broke this down was prefect. Great information like this is far and few between. Thanks for doing best practice. I work for myself now because there isnt enough people in the trades that actually are worth a damn. Atleast here in Pennsylvania

What process would you use for a flower bed against the house? I wouldn't want to leave exposed gravel or sod in a mulch bed. Needs to blend in. I guess I could convert the entire bed to river rock?
I'm going to be installing a French drain in my yard. I will be installing it going downhill, but there are some existing downspout drains running perpendicular to said French drain. How should I go about dealing with these downspout drains? Rerout or lay the French drain underneath?
I have a yard that keeps flooding after large storms, though I have a drain in my yard with 4 corrugated pipe and it flows water out fast and efficiently it doesn’t seem to be enough, I’m at the bottom of a hill with 5 other yards that all drain from ground water and gutter water into my yard and leave inches of standing water. What should I do? Add more drains or larger ones? Also is there a different drainage system I should have in my yard?

I want to build a french drain at the back of my house, but there are some spots where the drain has to run down hill (around 25% slope) for a couple of feet. Could that cause any problems with clogging or something else?

Very good video but missed a very important part on french drain. Where was the pipe when the rock was placed? Pipe at the bottom? Center? Top? Also putting rock all the way to the top is incorrect, it should be dug deeper to leave space for dirt and compaction if needed over filter fabric. Also filter fabric did not seem to overlap eachother which is the correct way rather then placing a strip fabric on top. Just my .02 cents!

in south Alabama we are not allowed to connect to storm drains what do you recommend if not a popup?

We want to level out our yard so that its nicer for our kids to play. Should we grade our yard first then put the french drain in? I heard you say not to add dirt bc it changes the low areas and the drainage.

I just moved to IL and I have two drains that are failing.
One is run 4 feet from the gutter to a pop up and it just pools in.
The other runs from a gutter under my front walk way to a pop up.
Im from California and they run them all the way to the curb drill a through it so it can run to the sewer.
Excellent stuff. I'm so tired of fixing other people's work. On the other hand, this is why people pay we who do it right the first time more. Find your niche, excel in it. Blue Ocean Baby! be the only one out there. BTW Can you use wick/strip drains that far north?

How about strength of the blue and yellow pipe, the home depot /lowes crap, you can crush with just a push of your thumb, is the Baughman pipe stronger in relation
ua-cam.com/video/0OxzY9RIADU/v-deo.html he parks a diesel truck on dual-walled pipe for a while. The truck, if it's a 2018, has a curb weight of 6700-7500 pounds. so that pipe is holding, at a minimum of, half that over the width of two tires.
Does this system described work all the way down to the footer around a foundation though? And do you backfill with all stone around a foundation?
Don't backfill all the way to the surface with stone on a basement. If the pipe gets clogged the stone will fill up with water and the hydrosthetic pressure will push the wall inward.
I’d have thought the yellow pipe was for gas. The gas board use that to sleeve their gas mains on sites these days.

Question - I see a lot of "professional" drain contractors on UA-cam saying that geotextile fabric will eventually get clogged up if in clay / silt soil and in fact, that you should only use it on the top, not all the way around, which means unless the water flows in from above (surface water), the drain will eventually fail - is this true? If yes, how do you fix or maintain this?

Great video and informative and never got bored. My neighbor has a leak they won’t fix and the city won’t help. My question is I have a 3” pipe that runs under the area I need fixed and it goes to the street though the curb and is used for pool deck and backyard drainage. How would I tie into it to take the water away from the side of my house? Do you have a video on that? Again great job!!!
3 inch doesn't move enough water 4 inch line is our minimum.

Question. I am on the Oregon coast and I am building a new house. The lot behind me drains towards my house so I immediately thought of a French drain. My question is that I want to create the French drain after the house siding goes on, that way nobody will be trampolining all over the yard when the contractors are working. I don't know what kind of landscaping yet but I do know it won't have grass. Should I fill in the top of the trench with tree bark temporarily? Right now it's all soil with no existing vegetation. I will only have a 17 ft back yard and the terrain slopes down and left to right.

Do you know anyone in the Tampa area you can recommend. Most of the people around here install drains that fail. They get clogged quickly between the Sandy soil and oak tree debris.
I live in SE Mich. My sump pump line runs under ground, away from home. The area where I believe it discharges (pop up) has standing water. Any suggestions on next steps?
