We have a 1986 sierra 2.8 v6 xr4x4. On the airbox it's got a little sicker, telling you about valve clearances and the gaps required, and how to adjust the timing, for leaded and unleaded fuel, Not only do handbooks now tell you not to drink screenwash, but owners and mechanics can't even read the bloody dashboard telling them what's wrong with the vehicle. It's incredible how times have changed in 37 years. I dread to think what this world is going to be like in another 50 years
We have had the car 30 years and 80k miles, its had two gearboxes, 3 clutches, but the engine has never gone wrong, in fact the heads have never been off, let's see how these eV batteries are in 20 years time.😂
Think what happened since then. Hint: OBD2. Mechanics are just glorified admin assistants reading off a scanner. Very few posses the skills to accurately diagnose anymore.
@@HaggisMuncher-69-420 That's an utterly stupid comment. OBD/CANBUS cars can almost NEVER be diagnosed and fixed without reading the codes. Tell me genius, how do you diagnose a lean burn or misfire on a cylinder by listening to it?
Fortunately a local petrol station by me has added smaller pump handles to the large Adblue tank that was exclusively for lorries. Easy to fill up, no plastic containers and, more importantly, is much cheaper.
These work as long as the neck on your tank has a magnet in , otherwise they will not dispense , i have a magnet adaptor so i can fill a 20ltr can for a digger
It’s best to purchase your Adblue from somewhere like ALDI which is air conditioned rather that a hot and sunny garage forecourt which is bad for the Adblue.
The dashboard message telling you to fill the adblue tank should be enough. People are ignoring it and then the level gets too low and won't reset by itself.
My GF has a Volvo XC40. Going to try this out! She has already been to the shop with the car about 6 times, changed sensors and more and nothing helped. Now they want to change the whole system! Costs about 4000 pounds. hope this works! Thank you for the information ;) Good luck, and all the best wishes.
So a message comes up on the dash saying top up the ad blue and people still don't bother to top it up I'm confused lol I also get what you mean about garages storing it incorrectly I stopped at services yesterday there must of been 40 of them containers sat outside in the sun..
That could be a problem basically on any adblue systems. Adblue crystalizes and leaves all kind of issues. When you have the chance to fill it up at a fuel station without a jug just from the pump when you refuel, top that up too, and you'll save yourself a lot of time for sure, and as this example tells you even thousands of euros or pounds.
Got a CX 7and the adblue crystallised in the tank and Mazda wanted $5,000 to change the tank as it had 4 sensors and they cant be individually changed! Got a computer whiz to reprogram the car to not need adblue for $2500.
In a few days I'm going to try the additive to prevent crystalization, hope it's going to fix my 10 lorries 🤬 Little side note, in the manuals they say not to completely fill the adblue tank, but leave a 5-10 centimeters gap. I have no idea why. That's impossible to do if you fill with a portable jug
Fully agree I have a 2013 Vauxhall Vivaro 2.0 CDTi thar I maintain (regular oil changes, brakes pads etc.) and it never fails to start first time and never had a DPF issue. Neighbour has a 2 year old Vivaro and he's already had two Adblue Units fitted 😱 (luckily under warranty).
Well I'll be the dissenter here. On my fifth diesel and the third with a DPF. Never been a problem. This one also takes adblue, which so far has also not been a problem. Might be in the future but we will see. Even if they did the vehicles that suit my needs in petrol I think I would stick to diesel. I like the fuel economy and the torque. As for going back to something older. Nope. Been there, done that. Like my modern comfortable SUV thanks. In fact sold the last one because it was too old fashioned and a pain on long trips.
Thanks again for your honesty. I have a question about the launch gun you use, does it turn to a vapour as it’s pumped in or is it still a liquid? I have several air tools that might work be don’t want to waste the liquid if it’s going in wrong..
Thank you for this, you sharing this knowledge helps a lot of diy people and much appreciated. Not this particular issue but I had a pressure sensor fault if it wasn’t to your video Land Rover was happy to put a new DPF in at £3k which wasn’t even faulty!
The general rule for adblue is to add 10 litres at a time. Most tanks are around 17 litres but if you just add small mounts the car doesn’t recognise the level. I have run cars with adblue for 9 years and only had a problem once when, the dealer failed to top up the adblue at annual service but listed it as done. This caused the terminal countdown to start but the nice RAC man sorted it out for me in minutes.
I inherited my 308 gtline 15 plate 40k miles but never buying a diesel again with all these ad blue sensors etc. I had the exact thing , no top up light, but fault code, people saying NOX sensor , ad blue pump in reservoir ( over a grand), so just put in 9 litres right to top got brake down service to reset then all good . Now one mouth later(now) I’ve got 5 warning lights come up together, so it’s investigation time again, bloody sensors but car runs fine ; tyre pressure fault, parking brake fault, anti roll back fault, esp/asr system fault and abs fault. So some say it might be only abs sensor throwing it all out? 🇬🇧
Honestly, I'm seriously considering spending out on a decent OBD-II tool so I can do most of the diagnostics myself. I have a simple code reader/clearer now which is good for the basics at least.
One of my customers brought a PSA product, and was told it did not have add blue, later found out it did and all gone tits up because it ran out of Add blue. Apparently the tank was hidden in the boot area?
Thanks Jimmy. I’ve had this issue with my 2019 combo van. Got the NOx sensor changed (600) but didn’t clear the issue. Happened twice more. Local garage just reset ecu. It’s happened again this week! Lights have come on!! Never got a warning about adblue so will top up this weekend and see if lights go out. Was thinking about taking out fuse to reset lights. Yes or no?? Also, wondered if an ecu software update would help. Any advice would really help. Thanks.
I had a problem come up after using the pump of adblue. Seems the pump adblue is for trucks. Dont use it. Use the containers that havent been stored in a window or outside. Only get adblue from inside a shop or parts suplier. My car was a citreon c4 with the adblue and the pats fluid tank.
Hi Jimmy great video....the engine warning light on vw crafter went on had diagnostics they said I need new adblue tank as tanks heater system faulty....but reckon I'll top up first and see if fault fixed?? What do you think...??
I wonder if it's the quality of the ad blue maybe not enough pigs urine I've had two problems using Tesco's own first time the garage just drain the tank and reset it and it was okay after I had problems calling out the RAC on at least four occasions and resetting it, and made no difference. so this time I was down to 50 miles it wouldn't clear so I drained the rest of it from the tank and got a high quality and blue and reset and not been a problem. I think the sensor is very Twitchy on picking up the right formula if the formula mix is too diluted then it will keep triggering
It may not be so much the level but the quality or effectiveness of the adblue. If adblue is exposed to temperatures above 25 degrees C or below 5 degrees C it deteriorates quickly. Furthermore don’t be tempted to use adblue which has been sitting in a can for over 6 months. The NOx faults might well be a side effects of poor conversion of NOx emissions based on poor quality adblue. Your advice to top up every 2-4 weeks with fresh fluid is the best preventative measure. Also note the ammonia suspended in the adblue is very corrosion so make sure to clean off any drips with water after when refilling.
This must be a Jaguar Land Rover thing. I fill my Adblue when the low warning displays or if I am going on a long trip where I will be towing. I find the Adblue consumption higher under those conditions. As for containers, I fill from a pump at the service station. There are two near me that have Adblue. Much, much cheaper than buying by the container.
once you turn the adblue container upside down, stick a hole in the bottom (now top) with a penknife to let air in. takes about 30s to empty it. You need to know it's all going to fit in though !
Cool, I have a jaguar xe r-sport 20d , my local jaguar dealer told me Only use the jaguar adblue ,as the useing any other will lead to problems and I will Have to have the adblue tank drained and filled with jaguar adblue ? .
Hi, I have that issue at the moment, I added Adbul but it’s still showing on my Mercedes “ adbul Engine will not start in 350 miles 😩 and engine light come on, been to so many garage and been charge for diagnose with the same fault nox sensor need changing😩
I had this exact issue on my citroen c4, i added 10 lutres of adblue and had the faults all cleared. Same faults came back within 10 miles of driving...
From your experience, does it matter if you put non oem branded def/adblue into the tank as long as it meet specs? Or have you seen faults simply because it meets specs on the bottle but its non-oem?
The Jags and Land Rovers have multiple issues with this problem. Don't get me wrong this is the best first thing to try, but it rarely solves the issue for long.
Can you fix my vw touareg tdi...I missed the extended warranty for the emissions issue and the dealer says it will cost thousands to fix it...I filled the ad blue and the car stopped running after 200 miles.
What scanner can I get (that is affordable) to clear these codes.....My ad blue was never empty, but it is reading empty and car won't start...need to clear codes to take it to repiar shop. Tow is too expensive.
My 2017 Vito has a farly small Ad Blu tank, maybe 10 litres. So on a long drive I need to top up the tank. But when I add say 5 litres the dash level takes for ever to register that the tank is now full! Very frustrating indeed. You almost need to keep notes to avoid running low. Crazy.
Weird, my 2016 114 uses about a litre every thousand miles and normally the level resets on the second restart at the latest. Is yours the front wheel drive with the Renault engine or rear wheel drive merc engine?
Would this fault cause the jeep to go into low performance mode ???? And also what is your overall opinion on the landrover discovery 5 2L diesel. Cheers.
What do you suggest for hyundai i800 what has got a reductant heater circuit/open code, garage suggest wiring or pump, was quoted 4500 for a new adblue tank as the pump is in the tank.
The problem is jlr have the ecu parameters set incorrectly. Low add blue light= refill. No add blue left = limp mode/ error codes. But JLR won’t know this coz they only build problematic motors.
Hi! I waited too long, until the adblue warning system said 350 km (which is not much). I added about 10l of certified (ISO standard '...') Adblue to the tank. It's been 3-4 days and the system hasn't recognized the new Adblue and its counting down, now on 140 km, and so on. So should i just add more? Or try filling to the top from a rank station? Have i understood uour video correctly? I reckon my tank has room for 17l. Happy for all the help I can get.
I could add that it's been a few days of below 0 degrees C heee in Sweden, but it hasn't been down to -11 that is said to be the freezing point of Adblue.
Most manufacturers: "You're about 1500 miles off needing to stick some Adblue in or the trucks not going to start mate" JLR: "Thatll be 3grand please sir, oh, no, of course we've not mended it"
I had a adblue issue before I changed the scr catalyst then after 3 months it’s started to smoke the adblue system is faulty again it smokes a lot it’s adblue issue but I have a question if I delete the system software is it still going to smoke? I hate the smoke
Hi, i absolutely love the good honest advice on your channel. Would like your advice, my daily car is a 2021 Ford Kuga 2.0L 190hp Diesel, ive had no issues with the AdBlue system, but would you recommend me to start using the Exhaust crystal preventer additive you add to the AdBlue tank for preventive maintenance and to be on the safe side and how often would you use it. nah, they get the pretend rangerovers on a finance they can't afford, so never service it + run everything on the empty, you have to phone them up to tell them they need to pay for the diesel for a road test, " is that not covered by the warranty"

Much Regards.
Ive a disco sport and if you fill the ad blue to the top it will throw up an alarm, happened a while back so just put 10l in to the tank when the light comes on, daft landrover!!
How did you fix this?
@@suhailmanji2866 had to bring it to dealership,a mile countdown timer came on that i couldnt reset, even drained the tank myself.its a flaw with all discosport..i make sure i only put in 10L at a time now when prompt comes on
What did thr dealership do to fix it? Did draining thr adblue help? My light is on but no fault codes in diagnostics tool
@@suhailmanji2866 local mechanic couldnt reset with his diagnostic tester so had to to to dealership, their report said drained 6 litres out of the tank which i know they didnt cos i had i drained off already and they had a diagnostic machine to reset, cost me €230 for 10 mins work😟
£6000 for that tab 👍🏼 what diagnostic scanner would you recommend for just checking my van and car, do i have to spend thousands to get good readings?
Crp129 Evo from Launch UK?

Will this scanner reset Adblue mileage count down in Astra k
what about over fill or was that just a scaremonger
Similar happened to my jag e pace but I over filled mine had to have it drained then code taken off or reset by the laptop machine then I filled right amount in so be aware all jag owners
i have a ford van and i have never used the bottles i always use the garage pumps it’s cheaper and to fill up its 18lt that’s 3 bottles
Hi do you have a ford transit custom as my ford transit custom 2020 L1 H1 adblu amber light and engine amber light is on what did you do to solve the problem thanks 👍
Land Rover Disco Sport 2017 - don’t “ overfill” the adblue or the inbuilt sensors won’t detect that the tank has been topped up therefore won’t reset the countdown and warning light. Bad design.
Hi jimmy is there any chance you can answer my last message regarding a Citroen dispatch been mapped no live data it’s in limp mode if I do a dpf clean and I can’t reset it because it’s mapped will it come out of limp mode and be ok . Many thanks
I honestly couldn't say without trying as it's remapped
@@ORileysAutos thanks and the pat fluid is low as well

Google has videos on checking levels.
Top guy for sharing this
My T6 has a message saying top up adblue so simple 😅
Very true about the containers Jimmy. I’ve even seen people leave them beside the pump. At their backside basically
Nice one Jimmy, thank you.
Same problem, may adblue level doesn't change, still 95% doesn't going down.
Well done Mr 😎
We like these customers . Let’s make some money
Adblu is such a scam, can i not just link out a level sensor so it always thinks its full?
The very best thing you can do with a modern diesel is do an EGR and AdBlue delete.
Agreed but illegal in many countries
@@alex_rogan if it's done right, it's undetectable.
but dont do what my friend did and pour it in the diesel filler by mistake !
Does ANYONE read the owners manual ? Spend 60 K , then cheap out on fluids !😄 Great information .
Recommended 15,000 service intervals make it 20k because I'm busy.
nah, they get the pretend rangerovers on a finance they can't afford, so never service it + run everything on the empty, you have to phone them up to tell them they need to pay for the diesel for a road test, " is that not covered by the warranty"
Running costs are nothing compared with the high-maintenance blond driving it@@paulriggers1558
Delete the add blue with an Ecu delete. Job done.
